A cognate is spelt the same in English as in Spanish. Most of the time they mean exactly the same, too, for example:

piano piano

In Spanish there are also lots of words that look similar to English words but are not identical. These words are called near-cognates. They often have exactly the same meaning as the English (but not always!).

músicamusic

However, there are some words that look identical, or almost identical, to English words but have different meanings. These are often called false friends. For example, you have met the Spanish word once. This doesn’t mean the same as the English word “once”! Can you remember what it does mean, and how to pronounce it?

So the lesson from this is to use your knowledge of English to help you work out the meanings of Spanish words, but be careful. There are some that can trip you up.

La Sagrada Familia

The Sagrada Família (full name Basílica i Temple Expiatoride la Sagrada Família) is a large Roman Catholic church in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. It was designed by Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí (1852–1926).

Although not finished, the church is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In November 2010 it was consecrated (dedicated to a special purpose) and made a minor basilica by Pope Benedict XVI.

Building of the Sagrada Família began in 1882. Gaudístarted working on it in 1883. He took over the project, and changed it with his ideas on architecture and engineering.

Gaudí worked on it until he died. At the time of his death in 1926, less than a quarter of the building was finished. There is an expected finish date of 2026–100 years after Gaudí'sdeath.

Football in Spain

Spain national football team (Spanish: Selección de fútbol de España) is the national football team of Spain. The current head coach is Vicente del Bosque.

The team is often called La Roja ("The Red [One]"), La Furia Roja ("The Red Fury"), La Furia Española ("The Spanish Fury") or just La Furia ("The Fury").

The Spanish team became a member of FIFA in 1904, even though the team was made in 1909. Spain had their first match on the 8th of August 1920 against Denmark. Since the team's creation in 1909, they have been in 13 FIFA World Cups, and 9 UEFA European Football Championships.

Spain is one of the eight national teams to have been crowned world cup winners, having participated in a total of 15 of 21 FIFA World Cups and qualifying consistently since 1978. Spain has also won three continental titles, having appeared at 10 of 15 UEFA European Championships.

Verbs in the near future tense are easy to spot, because they are made up of three parts:

1. part of the verb ir (to go), 2. the word a, 3. an infinitive.

Vamos a comer paella We are going to eat paella.

To tellwhether a verb is in the present tense orthepreterite, you have to look at the verb ending.

Bebo zumo de naranja. I drink orange juice.Bebí zumo de naranja. I drank orange juice.
