Source K

Lying low on a flat plateau overlooking the Burmarrad plain is a

Roman villa dating back to the third century B.C. that used to look

out on a Roman port. Tradition has it that St Paul was welcomed by

Publius in this same area…Although archaeological and historical

facts have not yet confirmed these popular beliefs, this important site

sheds light on Malta’s economy during the Roman period… Only a

small area of the site has been excavated… Three vertical presses …

and numerous settling vats dotting the area suggest the villa

probably produced oil. … Around the third century A.D., a thick

wall was built around the villa.

and Greeks different in language but

they also differed in their interpretation

of art. The Greek statues depicted

perfect human figures, ideal beauty

whereas the Romans depicted them as

they were in reality. With all their

defects. We can see this both in the

Roman mosaics and frescoes. Athens

built its strength through sea trade

whereas the Romans expanded by

conquering lands. In Athens women

were not considered to be citizens

whereas in Rome, they were considered

to be so. The economy of both

civilisations depended on agriculture.

They both exported wheat, olive oil and

wine.
