VCE Assessment

Satisfactory completion of all VCE units

• Meet the required standard• Be submitted on time• Be clearly one’s own• Not breach the VCE rules – including attendance requirements

Significance of satisfactory completion

• In order to be given a score for a VCE unit, a student must satisfactorily complete that unit

• Receiving an N means no credit towards the VCE

Work not submitted or work deemed unsatisfactory

• If work is not submitted on time or deemed unsatisfactory, parents will be notified by email or phone call from the subject teacher

Extension of time for Assessment tasks

• If a student requires and extension on a piece of work they must apply for an extension of time using the paperwork in the VCE handbook.

• This must be signed by the parent and handed to the teacher 5 school days before the deadline. There needs to be reasonable grounds for requesting an extension of time.

Special Provisions for Assessment tasks

• Unless Special Provision or and extension of time has been granted prior to the due date, any work submitted late or resubmitted will be marked as ‘S’ or ‘N’ only.

Assessment – Units 1 & 2 (Year 11 Level)

• An internal examination• Some internally assessed coursework eg. laboratory work, orals,

folio• No actual work submitted to VCAA – only “S” or “N”• Mid-year and end-of-year Lauriston reports will include grades

as in Year 10

Assessment – Units 3 & 4 (Year 12 Level)

• For each subject, two types of assessment• At least one external examination• Some form of internal assessment which is verified, confirmed

or moderated by VCAA

Studying Units 3 & 4 in Year 11

• Primarily to gain valuable experience of 3/4 structures and processes

• Not intended to be the best subject score• Potentially a very slight numerical advantageImportant; • The 3&4 units must not detract from the 1&2 units• 1&2 units provide a crucial groundwork for 3 & 4 units

School Assessed Coursework (SACs)

Shorter pieces:• Each can be worth a very small % of total score• Usually done in class

Assessed by teacher:• Cross-marked to arrive at School based rank• Statistically moderated by VCAA

Need to be viewed as learning experiences not an end in themselves

WARNING

• Do not try to infer too much from scores on individual tasks within coursework

• Different tasks contribute a different amount toward the total SAC score

• Moderation can lead to significant changes in SAC scores

Feedback and reporting to parents and students

• Unit 1 and 2 subjects will receive feedback accompanied by a rubric. This feedback may also be in the form of a grade (if the work is towards an AT).

• It is wise to consider the criteria and feedback given aligning to this more than the grade.

• For SACs (unit 3 and 4)– for each task:• very high to not shown on each assessment criterion and/or• a global indication of level of achievement on scale VH, H,

satisfactory, not satisfactory – but generally no marks or grade (some may receive test marks)

• Parent/ teacher/ student interviews• Progress and Semester reports• Communication is crucial

General Achievement Test (GAT)

•Compulsory for all students taking a Unit 3/4 subject.•Used by VCAA:

• To check accuracy of SAC/SAT assessments• As part of the moderation process• To Calculate a derived examination score (DES)

•Students must take the GAT seriously•It could make significant difference to individual or group score

Eligibility for Special Examination Arrangements (provision)

• A diagnosed significant learning difficulty or severe health impairment or significant physical disability..

• Sustained an unexpected injury• Suffers sight impairment• Suffers a long-term illness (physical or psychological)

• This Application process is governed by the VCAA. • Paperwork needs to be completed and sent to the VCAA by 4

March.

• If you think that you may be eligible please make an appointment to see me ASAP.

SPECIAL PROVISIONS

• Can include:Extra time for internal assessmentModification of requirementsSpecial examination arrangementsA derived examination score

• Application form available from VCAA website or from me• Appropriate documentation is required• Final results do NOT show if Special Provision applied

ELIGIBILITY FOR SPECIAL PROVISION FOR INTERNAL ASSESSMENT

• Illness on day task is held/due or days leading up to the task (certificate required). Contact Student reception or VCE coordinator

• Difficult family or personal circumstances (require verification). Contact as above

• Absence from school due to representation of the school in an approved event (should know this in advance and therefore would have made arrangements with the teacher)

DERIVED EXAMINATION SCORE (DES)

ELIGIBILITY• documented, current, professional evidence indicates personal

circumstances have led to identifiable, adverse impact on overall performance in exams.

• In two weeks prior to exams. • Illness, death in family, hospitalisation, personal trauma. • No other Special Provisions already in place for same circumstances.

NO SPECIAL PROVISION FOR...

• Absence on due date without appropriate notification and supporting evidence

• Computer failure

SCORES, SCALING AND THE ATAR

In each subject, raw scores are matched to a normal distribution with a mean/median study score of 30 and a standard deviation of 7. This means that, for example:• 2% of students in the state receive a study score > 44• 8% of students receive a study score > 40• 16% of students receive a study score > 37• 24% of students receive a study score > 35• 50% of students receive a study score > 30
