about what we have read.
• Session 3 – Compare 2 characters.
• Session 4 – Write a character profile.
• Session 5 – Answer questions from a character’s point of view.
• Please remember to send your learning to: [email protected]
SESSION 1 – ZOG
• Today we would like to share the book ‘Zog’ by Julia Donaldson.
• If you have a copy at home then you could read this, alternatively
you could watch Mrs Gray reading it on our YouTube channel:

• We would now like you to answer the reading comprehension questions about this
story on the next few pages. The comprehension has been split into 3 sections.
– Part 1 = retrieval questions (find and copy the answer).
– Part 2 = inference questions (understanding the meaning).
– Part 3 = vocabulary questions (exploring the words).
• Finally, talk with a grown up about your opinion of this book. Did you enjoy the story?
If yes, what did you like about it? If no, what did you dislike about it?
• Have you enjoyed this book more or less than those from last week?

SESSION 2 – ROOM ON THE BROOM

by Julia Donaldson.
• If you have this book at home then please read through the
story. If not then please watch this video of the book being read by Mrs Gray:

• On the next page are some questions and activities to try based on this story.
• Finally, talk with a grown up about your opinion of this book. Did you enjoy the
story? If yes, what did you like about it? If no, what did you dislike about it?
• Have you enjoyed this book more or less than those from last week?
SESSION 2 – ROOM ON THE BROOM1. Look at the use of punctuation within the story. Can you explain why each type of
punctuation has been used? For example, in the sentence, ‘The witch tapped the
broomstick and whoosh! They were gone.’ Juilia Donaldson has used an exclamation
mark to show the broomstick is going really fast.
2. The dog 'bounded' with a hat in his jaws. Can you think of any other words to
describe how a dog moves? For example, ‘loped’ or ‘dashed’.
3. Look at the rhyming words in the book. Can you find any rhyming pairs? Is there a
pattern to the rhyming? Can you think of any other words that rhyme with these?
4. Can you create another page for the book, on which a new animal finds something
else that the witch has dropped. You could draw your character and create a rhyme
to describe them.
5. Please look on the next page for Mrs Janman’s example.
SESSION 2 – MRS JANMAN’S NEW PAGE FROM ‘ROOM ON THE BROOM’
SESSION 3 – COMPARING CHARACTERS• Today we are going to compare two of the characters from ‘Zog’ and ‘Room
on the Broom’.
• In both stories one of the main characters is a dragon.
Zog
The Dragon from Room on the Broom.
SESSION 3 – COMPARING CHARACTERS• First, we would like you to read the description of each of the
dragons on the next page and answer the questions about how
they are described and how they behave.
• After that, we would like you to complete the Venn Diagram
character comparison sheet. There are instructions for how to do
this a following page.
• Lastly, we would like you to think about which of the dragons you
like the best. Please talk with an adult about which dragon you
prefer and why?
SESSION 3 – COMPARING CHARACTERSZog
Dragon from Room on the Broom
• What adjectives have been used to describe
each dragon?
• How does each dragon behave?
• What is your opinion of each dragon?
SESSION 3 – COMPARING CHARACTERS• Using the character comparison Venn Diagram on the next page, we would like
you to find 4 things that are different about the characters and 2 things that
are similar or the same.
• You can use the prompts below to help with your ideas. Think about:
1. The way they look.
2. The words used to describe them.
3. Their personality.
4. What do they try to do to the female character in each book, e.g. Princess Pearl
or the Witch?
5. Who tries to fight them?
6. What happens to them at the end of their story?
SESSION 4 – CHARACTER PROFILE• In this session we are going to write a character profile for the Witch from
Room on the Broom.
• Please start by re-reading ‘Room on the Broom’ if needed:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T3ZTDIABWxc&list=PLmklshUg3Ov29We

• On the following few pages is a character profile activity. You will need to
complete each of the sections in order to explore this character in greater
depth. Please remember to write in full sentence, unless you are asked other
wise.
SESSION 4 – CHARACTER PROFILE
SESSION 4 – CHARACTER PROFILE
Hint: A quote is a sentence or just a few words that you have copied from the book.
SESSION 5 – ANSWERING QUESTIONS FROM A CHARACTERS POINT OF VIEW
• In today’s session, we would like you to take on the role of Princess Pearl from
‘Zog’.
• We would like you to answer the questions on the following page from her point
of view.
• This means you will need to answer in the first person, e.g.
‘I like to …’ ‘My favourite is…’ ‘We had to…’
• For example:
– Question: Why did you give Zog a pink plaster when he crashed into the tree?
– Answer: I gave him a pink plaster because he had cut his nose and also because pink is my
favourite colour.
• Please remember to write your answers as full sentences and think about the
punctuation you will need to use.
SESSION 5 – ANSWERING QUESTIONS FROM A CHARACTERS POINT OF VIEW
1. How did you first meet Zog?
2. Why did you help Zog?
3. How did you know how to help Zog when he was hurt?
4. Do you enjoy being a princess? Why or why not?
5. Why did you let Zog ‘kidnap’ you?
6. Why do you want to help all the dragons?
7. What would you like to be now that you are grown up?
8. Do you think you will continue to be friends with Zog? Why or why not?
• Lastly, can you think of any of your own questions to ask Princess Pearl? What
might her answer be to your questions?
