Year 3 MathsMultiplication
LO: To investigate the 4times table.

SuccessCriteriaPut the children into small groups and either gather sticks from your outdoor space oruse some from your bank of natural loose parts. Ask the children to lay the sticks in
the shape of squares to create a number track. Inside each square ask them to writethe multiples of 4 using chalk, they can count the sticks they have laid out to supportthem or check their answers. You can set a minimum number of squares they need tocreate to ensure their number track is useful for them during the main.
Take a moment to discuss the multiples of 4 in order as a class to ensure everyonehas completed their number track accurately.
To count from 0 in multiples of 4.To recall and use multiplication
facts for the 4 multiplicationtable.
To write and calculatemathematical statements for

PreparationDisplay 4 times table calculations aroundyour outdoor space - you could place theseinside plastic wallets and we would suggestusing pegs or bulldog clips to attach tofences, bushes and trees.
I can count in multiples of 4.I can calculate multiplications
from the 4 times table. I can start to recall the 4
times table.I can link the 4 times table to

Challenge
Main
Provide extra support, during themain, to those who are struggling
by putting them into pairs orworking with the support of an
adult.
The challenge in the main activity comesfrom the progressing through
increasingly harder questions, make sureto provide some calculations tough
enough to challenge your more able, they may go beyond the length of their
number track and so they need to spendsome time working out how to find the
answer! You could also incorporate ‘trueor false’ style questions into the mainactivity, written on different coloured
card for them to solve using theirnumber tracks.
Put the children back into their original groups and ask them to create a numbertrack showing the multiples of 2 underneath their original number track showingmultiples of 4. Ask them to discuss in their groups whether they notice a linkbetween the two.
Hold a class discussion about the fact that they can use the 2 times table to findanswers to the 4 times table by doubling the multiples of 2. Accompany this withvisual representation on one of the number tracks.
Plenary
Working individually, the children will move around the outdoor space to find the 4 timestable calculations you have displayed around the area. The children read the calculation andthen come back to their number track and jump along the multiples of 4 to find out theanswer. You could provide individuals with clipboards or chalk to record the calculations and theiranswers.
Whilst the children are working, you are free to move around and offer support whereneeded.
