This year we will be learning about and celebrating Cyprus, “The Island of Aphrodite,” a beautiful island country located in the eastern part of the Mediterranean Sea. Cyprus won its independence from the United Kingdom on August 16, 1960 after a 4 year war and the people of Cyprus celebrate every year on October 1st with festivals and a large military parade in the capital city of Nicosia. The official languages of Cyprus are Greek and Turkish and the population is approximately 1,155,403. The national flag is show above.

An opening luncheon was held on December 11, 2013 at the Stafford House to celebrate the launch of a new project that intends to help high school students enrolled in foods, nutrition, and culinary arts classes gain experience that can potentially be used toward college credit. Through this program, an educational track between local high schools, Big Sandy Community and Technical College, and the University of Kentucky is being explored. Extension Homemakers are supporting this effort with a FCCLA scholarship earmarked for students going into the culinary arts.

The Stafford House is available for booking all throughout the months of April and May for your private events. In addition, local culinary arts high school students are available to cater your meals on certain

occasions. Other options include Kentucky Proud meals, local caterers, and professional chefs! Call the office for more information or to begin planning your event.

The holiday season at the Stafford House was very successful. Paintsville’s

“Christmastime in the City” brought out over 250 guests while musicians, visual artists

and the literary arts were featured and celebrated!

Upcoming Classes

February 27th at 1 pm — Painted Quilt Blocks with Tammy Penix — paint quilt designs on woodblocks,

three sizes available, good for inside art décor or outside flower garden art.

March 13th at 1 pm — Counted Cross-Stitch with Sherrie Bailey

March 18th at 6 pm — Create beautiful coasters from ceramic tiles with Vicki Rice

April 3rd at 6 pm — First class in a three class series on acrylic painting with Angele Doderer. First

class—basic instruction using pencil and paper, second class—begin painting techniques, third class—

continue and finish painting

April 8th at 6 pm — Computer class with Tina Pyles — learn basic skills such as cut and paste, loading

and saving pictures, etc.

April 10th at 1 pm — Girl Talk with Sherrie Bailey and Chris Fairchild — Problem solving, sharing ideas,

discussions on health issues, diet, cooking, and crafts

April 15th at 1 pm — Painting Ceramics with Norma Bayes-Music — learn dry-brushing techniques on

pre-handmade, take-home ceramic figures

April 22nd at 11 am — Jewelry Art with Paula Blair — create beautiful pictures with old jewelry — bring

a canvas or other hard surface (word, thick cardboard) and your own old jewelry if you would like to use

it (there will be jewelry available to use in class)

April 28th at 6 pm — Beginning—Intermediate Photography with Robyn Blanton

After securing a Brushy Fork Flex-E Grant, we are excited to move forward with plans to host Johnson County’s first cultural preservation play to be held at the OSCAR this summer. We are currently holding an open call for playwrights, directors, and anyone else who might want to be involved in this project. Interested parties may email their resumes to emily.baldridge@uky.edu.

We are also currently looking for people who have stories from the past that they would like to share. These stories could be used to help write the play! Acknowledgement will be given to anyone whose stories are used. To set up an interview date email Brenda at bcockerh@uky.edu or call (606) 789-8108.
