Survey indicates more Americans are struggling to pay medical bills. The Washington Post (8/20, A2, Joshi) reports that "Americans are struggling to pay medical bills and are accumulating medical debt at an increasing rate," according to "survey by the Commonwealth Fund, a private foundation that supports independent research on healthcare." Over 40 percent of "adults in the 19-to-64 age group reported problems paying medical bills or had accumulated medical debt in 2007, up from [33 percent] in 2005." According to the survey, there has been "a sharp rise in the number of people spending more than 10 percent of their income on healthcare. Among people with annual income below $20,000, the figure more than doubled to 53 percent from 26 percent in 2001." Furthermore, among "those facing mounting medical bills, 39 percent used all their savings, 30 percent incurred large credit card debt, and 29 percent said medical bills left them unable to pay for basic necessities such as food, heat or rent."

Employers increasingly offer consumer-driven health plans, survey suggests. The Triangle Business Journal (8/20) reports, "A new survey by [UBA], shows that participation in consumer-driven health plans is becoming an increasingly popular health insurance option." After surveying "18,019 health plans sponsored by 12,860 employers," UBA found that "the total number of consumer-driven health plans has increased this year by 43 percent over 2007." Consumer-driven health plans "now account for nearly 13 percent of
all plans offered by employers." According to the survey, consumer participation increased by 5 percent as well. UBA found that so far this year, "employers have contributed an average of $1,209 to health reimbursement accounts for single employees and $2,274 to family plans." While preferred provider organizations accounted for "54 percent of all plans offered," health maintenance organizations represented "21.3 percent of all plans offered.“
