||   Bhakthi of Saint ThyagarAjA to Lord KrishNA :    ||NoukA charithram, the Power of SaraNAgathi (Unconditional Surrender)

to the Lord.

Saint ThyagarAja SwamigaL's intense Bhakthi is well known and has been etched in many of His Krithis. He was also a great student of PottaNNA Bhagavatham and read from it every day. He composed two Operas (Geya Naatakams) based on that BhAgavatham and took some poetic liberties in the construction of the story .One of them is NoukA charithram, which deals with the grava Bhangam of the Gopis , who thought Baala KrishNan was under their spell. KrishNan teaches them a lesson and then blesses them in this fictional story. The second one is PrahlAdha Bhakthi Vijayam. Here is a write up about "NoukA Charithram" of Saint ThyagarAjA.

Introduction***********

In the Carnatic Music tradition, Geya Natakams (Musical dramas) have played an important role to grow the devotion of the people. Great composers with extraordinary gifts of (1) knowledge of the Puranams and Vedanthic lore (2) scholarship in musical and literary areas (3) skills in constructing Saahithyam (4) gift of imagination to create insightful dialogs and (5)natural talent to set the Saahithyams in appropriate Ragas befitting the mood and feeling states (rasas) of the different sections of the musical dramas have blessed us with their outstanding works.

What is indeed a Geya Naatakam?*******************************

There are two kinds of dramas (naatakams) in the Carnatic Music tradition ceelbrating Bhakthi: (1) Nritthya Naatakam and (2) Geya Naatakam.

Both have different blends of poetry, music, dance and Symbolism. Nritthya naatakam (dance drama) is the one, where the emphasis is on dance or nrittyam. Abhinayam and foot work play equally important roles in Nritthya naatakam. In Geya naatakam however, the dance part is incidental and abhinayam as well as music parts have the dominant roles. The nava rasaas permeate the geya naatakams. The exalted

nature of the music and bhakthi anubhavam permits the listeners to enjoy the geya naatakams even if they do not have the familiarity of the languages in which they are written such as Sanskrit (Krishna Leela Tarangini of Naarayana Theerthar), Telegu (Prahladha Bhakthi Vijayam and Nouka Charithram of Saint Thyagaraja) and Tamil (Nandanaar charithram of Gopala Krishna Bharathi). Geya Naatakams are set in a higher plane than the Yaksha ghaanam, which is also a form of musical drama associated with Melattur school of Bhaagaavtha Melams.

The Geya naatakams have a mixture of songs; some are set in krithi style and others in simpler melodic form (viruttham format). The raaagas used are mostly rakthi raagas except occasional ghana raagas. Usually , the opening and the closing raagam is the same (Surutti raagam in Nouka charithram). Poetry and prose passages (padhyams) are intermingled in geya naatakams. Lofty themes from Puranams, Ithihaasams(Raamaayanam and Maha Bharatham) and Bhagavath Githai are interwoven to provide uplifting moral lessons.

The Raagas used in the Geya Naatakams*************************************

We will illustrate the choice of raagas used by Saint Thyagaraaja (Nouka charithram) here and cover Prahlaadha Bhakthi Vijayam and Saint Sri Krishna Leela Tarangini in subsequent articles.

Raagas used in Nouka charithram******************************

In Nouka charithram, Saint Thyagaraja used 13 raagams for the 21 songs. Sourashtram and Punnagavarali are used for 4 songs each, Ghanta and Surutti are used twice. The remaining 9 raagams are used for one song each: Pantuvarali, Yadhukula Khaambhoji, Saranga, Bhairavi, Saveri, Karnataka Kaapi, Devaghaandhaari, Varali and Mohanam. These raagas depict important rasaas like Sringaram, Veeram, Adhbhutham, Bhaayanakam (fear), Haasyam and Bheebhatsam (disgust).

Comments on selected raagams used*********************************

(1)Punnagavarali: it is a janya raagam of Hanuma Thodi and is known for karuna rasam. It is an ancient raagam used in Odam paattus (Teppa Uthsavams/float festivals of the deities). It is an alpa raagam, which does not permit elaborate aalaapanais. The sancharam is from manthra kaakali nishadham to madhya kaisiki nishadham. Four songs are set in this raagam since Nouka charithram deals with the daya (mercy) aspects of Lord Krishna and his compassion (Karunai) for those who seek His refuge.

(2)Souraashtram is a janya raagam of the 17th mela raagam, Soorya Kaantham and has been used to house four songs. This is an ancient mangala raagam that can be sung at all times. The Souraashtra krithi of Nouka charithram , "nee naama roopa mulaku " is used at the end of concerts.

(3)Surutti is a janya raagam of the 28th mela kartha, Hari Khaambhoji and is yet another managala raagam used twice in Nouka charithram

by Thyagaraja Swamigal. This raagam is known to generate Bhakthi and Sringaara rasams. It is also a raagam that will not lend itself to long aalapanais and can be sung at all times.

(4)Devaghaandari raagam is the janya raagam of the 29th mela raagam, Dheera Sankaraabharanam. It is known for the VaLi gamakam. Kampitha Rishabham and kampitha dhaivatham are the sign marks of this raagam. It is known for generating Veera and adhbhutha rasams (valour and wonderment). Saint Thyagaraja peformed aalapanai for this raagam for eight days in a row to reveal its many facets, while he was stayeing with his sishyan, Veenai Kuppaier at Madras.

(5)VaraLi is the 39th mela raagam and is also one of the Ghana pancha raagams. It is another karuna rasa pradhaana raagam which can be developed elaborately. The krithi "Inthukemi" of Nouka charithram is set in Varali raagam.

The rest of the raagams-- pantuvarali, Yadhukula Khaambhoji, Saranga, Bhairavi, Saveri, Karanataka kaapi, Ghanta and Mohanam --are used by Thyagabrahmam to etch poems soaked in one or other of the nava rasams to heighten our enjoyment of this geya naatakam.

The story of Nouka Charithram****************************

This Geya naatakam deals with the humbling of the pride of Gopis by Krishna during a boat excursion with them on the river Yamuna. Gopis were very proud about their beauty and charm and concluded that Krishna was fully under their charm. They were giddy with pride and rowed themselves in the middle of the river, and sang there: "Evaru manaku samana?" (Who is there equal to us in the world today?). During the spell of their pride, they began to slight the Lord and forgot His divine nature. This song expressing their soundharya gharvam is set in the powerful Devaghaandhaari raagam portraying veera rasam and pride about their prowess to bring even Krishna ( Bhagavaan ) under their sway.

The amused Lord using His powers of maaya created a powerful storm with deafening thunder and blinding lightning in the middle of their boat ride on the river Yamuna. Krishna reminded them of their utter helplessness and the pride of Gopis disappeared. They were frightened and wanted to get to the shore safely. They appealed to the Lord of the universe to rescue them from imminent disaster of drowning. Their appeals are housed in Ghanta raagam and invokes the mood of sOkam that they were experiencing about their folly caused by their haughtiness. After few more tests about the humility of the Gopis, Krishna makes them understand the importance of total (unconditional) surrender to Him. The Gopis prayed with utmost devotion to Him and appealed to Him again as their one and only rescuer. Krishna then stopped the rain storm and peace prevailed. The boat was found at the bank of the river, wherefrom they started. The relieved gopis were now joyous and celebrated His dayaa and kaarunyam and His vow to protect those, who seek the refuge of His

lotus feet. They sprinkled fragrant rose water on Him, decorated Him with kasthuri tilakam, dressed Him in peethaambharam, showered multicolored, fragrant flowers and performed mangala haarathi for Him in a mood of gratefulness for the extraordinary bhaagyam of His divine companionship and blessings. A mangalam sung by them in surutti ragam concludes this magnificent geya naatakam. Sri Balamurali Krishna has sung the entire nouka charithram in a mellifluent manner and this recording is a delight to listen to.

Mangala krithi : "Maakula munakihapara mosaki neeku Mangalam"************************************************************

In the pallavi of this krithi, the joyous and thankful Gopis say: " Auspiciousness to You Oh Lord ,who gave to us and our kulam matchless riches in this and the other world (iha-para sukham). Subha mangalam to you! Jaya mangalam to you !" Oh Lord with the majestic gait of an elephant in rut ! Oh ParamaathmA embodying limitless auspicious attributes ! Oh Lord who resides in our heart lotuses ! Oh Saranagatha Vathsala Swamy , who responded to our prayers and rescued us! Mangalam to You ! Subha Mangalam to You! Jaya managalam to You!"

Vedanta Desika -111

Part 20

PADUKA SAHASRAM

Preface

While I went through Paduka Sahasram slokas I am struck by the sloka in 464 in the beginning. Swamy Desikan quoted himself as manthabuthou mayi thwam as 'a puny poet that I am ,seeks to sing your praise' . I just imagine how much Abacharam on my part to come up to write on the eternal works of such a genious personality Swamy Desikan.

Again in sloka 1005 he says that he had ventured in this difficult job as an immature debutant, balasya sahasamitham . As he told in the same sloka I also plead you all to forgive me for any ignorance noticed in my writings so far in this divine subject.

In Srirangam Sri Vedanta Desika composed the Paduka Sahasram, 1008 verses in praise of the sacred sandals of Lord Sri Ranganatha's lotus feet at Srirangam. It is said that Swamy Desikan composed the entire lot in most supreme Bakthi and remarkable composition as poetry in a single in third quarter of that night ,in response to a challenge from the learned scholars of Srirangam.Paduka sahasram contains 1008 slokas in 32 paddhatis or chapters. Swamy Desikan made indirect references on Azhwars and the great epic Srimad Ramayanam from where the greatness of the sandals appears and on some aspects of philosophy. He prays to the lord that he should always be blessed with true devotion and enthusiasm in the performance of his divine service. Though there are number of religious literatures available the spirit of the Paduka-sahasram is unique and cannot be compared . Sri Rama's sandals is equal to Acharya from where the powerful grace more than Lord's grace can be obtained. Nammazhwar the author of Thiruvaimozhi, is said to possess such a fine quality of Acharya mentioned very often in Paduka Sahasram. The reason SriSatari in temples is called as SriSadagopan , is because Nammazhwar is generally considered as the paduka of the divine.

Morals in Paduka Sahasram

Swamy Desikan has not only did divine service of Paduka vandanam in this , but also took pains to convey some morals . It is observed that in slokas 821 to 830 of chapter 28,Swamy Desikan follows Subashitha paddathi. My observations are just briefed here.

1. Kalaasu kashtamathistan -One who is an expert in fine arts bestows similar respectability even on his near and dear ones.

2. Santhas vibaaga sunyam Sadhus never forsake their duties whether they be in their own place or in a strange place outside.

3.Kelivithou vibhunam Vallavanukku pullum ayudham- examples -Rama's brahmasthram from just a thin grass ,Parasurama drying the ocean through punyas from his penance, Paduka stepping out from leg and ruling the country.

4. Prayo nidarsayathi What one merits as his due post may miss him first but it will surely reach him ultimately. Paduka missed Rama's feet but it got the office of the ruler of the kingdom in Ayodhya.

5. charanamaga vruthe It is better to cling to the feet of a good man of a defectless character following the footsteps for the welfare of all .

6.Daivamathra pranamam -The incomprehensible way of GOD runs supreme in all events in all places .

Dasaratha had a wish that Rama should get the kingdom. People in Ayodhi also wished the same. But Mother Kaikeyi wished forcefully to secure it for Bhartha, her son. Dasaratha also agreed to that , he being an adherent to the sworn word. Unfortunately even that could not be effected. All of a sudden a supreme coronation and consecration of SriPaduka took place .

When Rama asked Bharatha as to whether he follows what melaiyar seivanagal our forefathers did, Bharatha replied firmly that Rama alone has failed to follow the hierarchy of elder brothers ruling first. He said that the reason for Paduka Rajyam was only to avoid this embarrassing situation. All these are Daivamathra pranamam .

7. Vikrame saaha charyam - Padukas assisted not only in walks and travels, but also helped in talents of Guru. Anybody can concede the priority of place only with some specific qualifications.

8.Bavathiguna sriyam abyubeyusham- The attainment of affluence automatically confers virtue also on one.

9. Nahivasthushu sakthi - There is no prima facie guarantee that an object would have a particular property. Everything is will of GOD and decided already.

10. Thameva seveththa saatharam -To prosper further it is better to serve the great personalities for ever , though he was treated as a servant once.

Nammazhwar and Paduka

Very oftenReferences on nammazhwar were made in this.

In sloka 2 Pranams to Nathamuni and Bharatha were conveyed in the beginning. Bharatha brought the glory to Rama's Padukas and Nathamuni brought the glorious Thiruvoimozhi .

As below, in slokas 21 to 30 Swamy Desikan pays his obeisance to Sri Nammazhwar and Sri Paduka as both bears the name of Satari.

Sloka 21, Sri Nammazhwar and Paduka are fast attached to the feet of the lord. Both have the same name as SriSatari ,(sata conqueror) .

Sloka 22, Nammazhwar's Dramidopanishad is a path for eternal peacefulness. To know this by all who come to the shrine, he came as paduka (svayameva mananeeya) .

Sloka 23. Respecting all caste people Nammazhwar was born in the community of Thiruvadi and bore the name Stakopa.

Sloka 24. Nammazhwar made vedic knowledge available to all through Thiruvoimozhi. Paduka helped him to walk to all places and made Vedas easily available to all people.

Sloka 25. Melodious music generating from Paduka and thousand verses of Nammazhwar are sweet and nectar like.

Sloka 26. Paduka excelled Nammazhwar bearing his name Satakopa, and exhibits as being his Dasan . Nammazhwar said that he is eighth in rank of Dasan

Sloka 27. Seshathwa is increased twofold for taking the role of Paduka and with the name of Satakopa it has caused Bagavartha Sesha .

Sloka 28. Nammazhwar though sings on Paduka became his vassal later. So Seshasayee Lord,is attained only with the help of Paduka and Nammazhwar

Sloka 29, After Agasthya, Tamil vedas as Thiruvoimozhi leading in front , and with Vedas in Sanskrit in back of the temple processions is great one.

Sloka 30, Paduka sahasram is equivalent to Satakopa's Thiruvoymozhi in which both has 1000 verses and in praise of GOD.

Word miracle (Varthajalam )

There are some slokas which has just repetition of just one word in the entire sloka conveying a different types of good meanings.

1. Sloka 933 paapaadapaapaa it conveys as Paduka makes us sinless ,bestows lustre and confers protection to Lord's feet, as a source of protection to all the worlds and cause destroying all sins .

2. Insloka 935, Thathathaththaathi as Paduka excels himself in its enjoyability and its status of being kept as the goal of life. It showers a bliss of experience by virtue of melodies as from Veena It is like a father to us all sharing in our mirth and grief.

3. In sloka 936, yaayaayaayaayaa as Paduka collected revenue being in throne, ensures auspices for devotees, benefactor of true wisdom on devotees, kindles a yearning for good things of life.

Paduka in Ramayanam

In sloka 108, says as Rama's glory pervades all the three worlds. Paduka became the guarantee security pledged by Rama to inspire a confidence in Bharatha that Rama will surely return to Ayodhya. This conveys the example of a thing accepted as security for money promised to be returned, must have a value greater than the money lent.

In sloka 123, Paduka's return to Ayodhya are for three reasons viz Rama's determination to go to forest to kill Ravana, to fulfill Dasaratha's promise, and to keep Rama's assent to Bharatha's persuation to return to the country.

In sloka 124, Swamy Desikan praises as Paduka has done a good job of returning to Ayodhya when Rama wished it. Paduka thus displayed greater obediance than Sita to Rama's words.

In sloka 231, Swamy Desikan says that the paduka is greater than even Vibishana and Sugriva though they did saranagathi of Sri Rama.

ON HEARING HIS MUSIC LADIES LEFT THEIR WORK IMMETIATELY.

ONE LEFT THE MILK AS IT IS TO BOIL AND RAN TO KRISHNA.

ANOTHER ONE LEFT HER HUSBAND AND CAME.

YET ANOTHER FORGOT THAT SHE WAS FEEDING HER CHILD AND RAN TO KRISHNA.

LIKE THAT ALL THE LADIES LEFT THEIR RESPECTIVE HOUSES AND REACHED WHERE KRISHNA WAS BLOWING MUSIC.

KRISHNA ASKED THEM “ WHY YOU PEOPLE LEFT YOUR HOUSES AND CAME HERE ? WHY YOU LEFT YOUR RELATIVES AND CAME TO ME ? THIS IS NIGHT TIME ? I KNOW YOU ARE ALL IN LOVE WITH ME. I CAN UNDERSTAND YOUR AFFECTION TOWARDS ME. THAT DOES NOT MEAN THAT YOU SHOULD LEAVE YOUR HOUSES AND COME TO ME. WHERE EVER YOU ARE, IF YOU THINK OF ME THAT IS ENOUGH. NOW PLEASE GO BACK TO YOUR HOUSES “.

BUT THOSE LADIES SAID, “ NOW HOW CAN WE GO BACK. WE LEFT OUR HUSBANDS AND CHILDREN AND SURRENDERED AT YOUR FEET. HEREAFTER YOU ARE THE ONLY PERSON WHO CAN ACCEPT US. WE HAVE DECIDED TO LEAVE OUR SOUL AT YOUR FEET ONLY “

HAVING UNDERSTOOD THEIR STUBURN MIND KRISHNA CAME TO A CONCLUSION. WHAT IS THAT ?

VALMIKI RAMAYANABy Dr. Saroja Ramanujam, M.A.,Ph.D , siromani

7. Panchavati and Arrival of Surpanakha

When Rama reached Panchavati he told Lakshmana to choose a place that will suit them all, to build a hermitage. The reply of Lakshmana was classic in its meaning implying his dasathva to Rama. He said,

paravaan asmi kaakutstha tvayi varsha Satam sThithe

svayam tu ruchire deSe kriyataam iti maam vadha

I am your dependent even if it is for 100years and you command me choosing a place yourself. Valmiki says that Lakshmana said this in front of Seetha, seethasamaksham.

The implication of this verse is as follows:

Lakshmana was the incarnation of Adhisesha who is the sesha of the Lord always. As such he wanted to be His servant and awaits His command. Sesha means a dependent who belongs to his seshi, who is free to use the sesha to suit his pleasure. Lakshmana exhibits his total dedication without any individual identity. He did not even declare himself as a devotee who might have his own wish to do what pleases the Lord our of volition. Lakshmana

wished only the kainkarya bhava to both the Lord and Lakshmi who is the purushakarabhootha, the one who secures the favour of the Lord. The word kimkara means the one who asks “what should I do?,kim karishye?’ So it is the master who tells the kinkara what to do.

In the place chosen by Rama Lakshman built a wonderful cottage and Valmiki describes its construction in detail. When Rama saw the cottage he embraced Laskshmana , saying, ‘preetho asmi the mahath karma thvayaa krtham arindhama; pradheyo yannimittham the parishvango mayaa krthaH.’

“ I am pleased with your great deed, oh destroyer of foes, for that reason I have to give you my embrace.”

What Rama meant was , so long he has seen only the valour of Lakshmana but now he has witnessed a totally different skill which deserves nothing less than an embrace. In a similar instance when Rama came to know that Anjaneya has seen Seetha he gave his embrace to Anjaneya, which was equal to giving himself. That is the same idea here. Then Rama told Lakshmana that he felt as though his father had never left him. ‘bhaavajnena krthajnena dharmajnena cha lakshmaNa ; thvayaa puthreNa Dharmaathmaa na samvrtthaH pithaa mama.’ Praising Lakshmana as a bhaavajana , one who knows the feelings of others as he had built the cottage as Rama would have wished it, a krthajna, one who knew the skill of doing a thing and dharmajna, one who knows what is right, Rama said that it was as though his father had come alive.

Thus they lived in Panchavati for three years. Then in the month of Chaithra one day when Rama was with Lakshmana and Seetha a rakshasi came there accidentally. The word yadhrccchayaa, used in the sense of ‘by chance’ by Valmiki denotes that all important happenings are by accident only like that of the climbing on the place tower by Manthara which was a turning point of the story and hence it was not yadhrccha but eesvara icchaa, the will of the Lord. Similarly here the advent of Surpanakha is another turning point of the story, again by divine will, that would lead to the destruction of Ravana , which was the purpose of the incarnation.

8.Surpanakha episode.Surpanakha the sister of Ravana came there and saw Rama. Valmiki who would never let go any opportunity to sing the praise of the personality and attributes of Rama, says,

Simhoraskam mahaabaahum padma patranibhekSaNam aajaanubaahum dheepthaasyam atheevapriyadharSanam

gaja vikraa.nta gamanam jaTaa maNdala dhaariNam sukumaaram mahaa sattvam paarthiva vyanjana anvitam raamam indiivara shyaamam kandarpa sadrSa prabham babhuuva indropamam dhrshtvaa raakshasii kaama mohitaa

Seeing Rama with broad chest, long arms signifying sovereignty, eyes like lotus, lustrous face and extremely pleasing to look at, with gait like an elephant, wearing matted locks, dark like the indheevara flower, defeating the god of love with his beauty, looking like Indra, the rakshasi felt insatiable desire for him.

Valmiki brings out the contrast between Surpanakha and Rama to show the ridiculous feeling of the rakshasi.

Sumukham dhurmukhee raamam vrttha maDhyam mahodharee

viSaalaaksham viroopaakshee sukesam thaamramoorDhajaa

preethi roopam viroopaa saa susvaram bhairavasvanaa

tharuNam dhaaruNaa vrdDhaa dhakshiNam vaamabhaashiNee

Rama was pleasant faced and had shapely waist, large eyes, beautiful hair, handsome, with sweet voice and youthful form and polite. On the contrary the rakshasi was fierce in countenance, with pot belly, ugly eyes, red and rough hair, ugly to look at with harsh tone and fearful appearance and was aged with deceitful talk.

She asked Rama who he was and why did he come to the forest with his wife, wearing hermit’s robs but carrying bow and arrow. Rama told her about himself and asked her identity. She said that she was the sister of Ravana whom he whole world dreaded and also the sister of Kumbhakarna , the strongest and Vibheshana who was righteous, ‘vibheeshanasthu Dharmaathmaa na thu rakshasa cheshtithah,’ though born as a rakshasa.

In Vakmiki Ramayana though Surpanakha came in her original form she tells Rama that she could take whichever form she wanted, ‘aham surpanakhaa naama raakshasee kaamaroopiNee.’ This was developed by Kamban who made her appear as a beautiful damsel .We shall see that later.

Then she asked Rama to become her husband saying that Seetha was not the suitable wife for him, being ugly and a human. She suggested that she will eat Seetha and Lakshmana so that Rama can be free to marry her.

Rama seeing the humour of the situation, told her teasingly that he was already married and she could perhaps choose Lakshmana who was without his wife, meaning that though he was also married his wife was not with him.

Then Surpanakha approached Lakshmana with the intention of making him her husband but Lakshmana told her that as he was he servant of Rama she would not be happy with him and told her to go to Rama and be his second wife when Rama may abandon his wife who is ugly and old (quoting Surpanakha’s words) and accept her. The rakshasee who was blind with desire could not see that they were making fun of her and went back to Rama and threatened to kill and eat Seetha .So saying she ran towards Seetha like a meteor towards the star Rohini.

Rama stopped her by uttering a humkaara and told Lakshmana not to play with her anymore but punish her because she had shown her evil intention towards Seetha. Lakshmana took his sword and cut her nose and ears. She ran into the forest shouting with pain and went to her brother Khara in JanasThaana and fell in front of him.

Now we shall see how Kamban differs from Valmiki regarding this episode.

Kamban refers to her as the one who was the cause of the destruction of Ravana. ’neelamaamani niruthar vendhanai moola naasam pera mudikkum moymbinaaL.’

Kamban describes the wonder Surpanakha felt on seeing Rama in 16 verses. Then she assumed the form of a beautiful damsel and walked in front of Rama. She chanted the manthra of Lakshmi, says Kamban to assume the beautiful form, perhaps to imply that everything was the will of the divine mother.

Kamban describes the arrival of Surpanakha with a beautiful verse,

‘panji oLir vinju kuLir pallavam anunga ,’ with enchanting metrical content.

Surpanakha saw Seetha and marveling at her beauty wondered whether Lakshmi had left the lotus and came on earth and seeing both of them she thought that Brahma had created both of them as the outside limit of all that is great. She also was amazed on seeing Seetha that anyone looking at her could not take their eyes off and if she felt like that as a woman what would be the effect of her beauty on others, meaning, men.

But then her desire got the better of her and she decided to speak ill of Seetha as she was an obstacle between her and Rama. Surpanakha exclaiming that Seetha was a rakshasi who was deceiving Rama by her good looks and sprang towards her when Rama threatened her and drove her away.

But Surlanakha could not control her desire and returned the next day when Seetha was alone in the hermitage , or so she thought, without seeing Lakshmana in the vicinity and tried to attack her when Lakshmana cut off her nose and ears. Then Surpanakha assumed her original form and ran to Rama and introducing herself as the sister of Ravana, told him that she suffered because of her love for him when Rama asked Lakshmana what happened. When he came to know what she did Rama told her to run away from there. But her desire was so uncontrollable and even in her ugliness she entreated him to accept her and said that perhaps he caused her deformity so that no one else except him should desire her. When she could not be made to see reason, Rama threatened to kill her of she remained there and she in her turn threatened them that she would bring Khara to destroy them all. This is how Kamban has changed the episode giving it a fillip by poetry and imagination.

DEAR SRIVAISHNAVAS,

KURESA VIJAYAM 6 - “SARABHA SIMHAM”

NOW WE DISCUSS ABOUT SARABHA NRUSIMHA EVENT UNDER THE TOPIC KOORESA VIJAYAM.

SAIVA PANDIT’S CLAIM:

NRUSIMHA WITH GREAT ANGER,KILLED THE ASURA KING HIRANYAKASIPU FOR HIS APACHARAMS [CRUALITY COMMITED TO PRAHLATHAN]. LORD SHIVA DEFEATED NARASIMHA BY TAKING THE FORM OF SARABHA. HENCE, SHIVA IS PARAVASTHU WAS THE CLAIM MADE BY SAIVA PANDITS.

KOORATHAZHWAR’S ARGUEMENT:

HIRANYAKASIPU PEFORMED SEVERE TAPAS TOWARDS LORD BRAHMA. BRAHMA WAS PLEASED AND APPEARED BEFORE HIM. HIRANYAKASIPU SEEKED A BOON THAT, HE SHOULD NOT GET KILLED BY DEVAS, ASURAS, MEN AND RISHIS.

HE SHOULD NOT ALSO BE KILLED WITH ANY WEAPONS ,IN DAY OR NIGHT, INSIDE OR OUTSIDE AND ETC..

BRAHMA GRANTED ALL THESE BOONS TO HIRANYAKASIPU.

WITH THESE IMMENSE POWERS, HIRANYAKASIPU STARTED HARASSING

PEOPLES IN EARTH, HEAVEN AND PATHALA WORLD. HE CONQUERED ALL THE THREE WORLDS.

DEVAS, RISHIS AND TAPASVEES WHO COULD NOT BEAR THIS HARASSMENT OF ASURA KING, MADE TAPAS TOWARDS VISHNU WHO IS PRAISED BY ALL VEDAS. LORD VISHNU WHO IS FULL OF COMPASSIONATE, WAS PLEASED WITH THIER PRAYERS, AND PROMISED TO HELP THE DEVAS.

LORD VISHNU CREATED PRAHLATHA AS THE SON OF HIRANYAKASIPU.

THE ASURA KING WAS VERY HAPPY AND TOOK GREAT CARE OF HIS SON.WHEN PRAHLADA ATTAINED THE RIGHT AGE, HIRANYAKASIPU CALLED THE ASURA’S GURU AND INSTRUCTED HIM TO TEACH THE HIRANYA MANTHRA ”HIRANYA AUM”.  BUT THE SATVIKA CHILD PRAHLATHA REFUSED TO SAY SO AND CHANTED ONLY NARAYANA MANTHRA “HARIH AUM”.

HIRANYAKASIPU COULD NOT TOLERATE HIS SON’S ACT AND WITH GREAT ANGER ORDERED HIS SERVANT TO TIE THE BOY WITH A STONE AND THROW IN TO THE SEA. WITH THE GRACE OF LORD VISHNU, THE STONE SAILED HIM TO THE SHORE LIKE A BOAT.

THEN HIRANYA ORDERED TO THROW PRAHLADA FROM MOUNTAIN TOP AND AGAIN WITH VISHNU’S BLESSINGS (ANUGRAHA), HE LANDED SAFELY WITHOUT ANY WOUND.THEN HIRANYAKASIPU ORDERED TO PUT HIM ON FIRE, BUT THE FIRE WITHOUT HURTING HIM GAVE A COOL FEELING OF SANDAL.  HIRANYA THEN GAVE POISON TO PRAHLADHA AND THE POISON BECAME A NECTOR (AMRUTHA) FOR PRAHLADHA. ALL THESE DEEDS WERE DUE TO LORD VISHNU’S KRUPA.

HIRANYAKASIPU WAS BAFFELED AND ASKED PRAHLADHA ABOUT THE MAGICIAN WHO IS HELPING HIM EVERYTIME. PRAHLADHA EXPLAINED TO HIS FATHER

“THE ONE WHO IS RESIDING IN ALL ENTITY AND WHO SUSTAINS EVERYONE IS MY LORD AND HE IS SRIMAN NARAYANA”.

HIRANYA THEN POINTED OVER THE PILLAR NEAR BY AND ENQUIRED IF NARAYANAN IS INSIDE THIS PILAR. PRAHLADHA SPONTANEOUSLY REPLIED THAT VISHNU IS EVERYWHERE INCLUDING THIS PILLAR. IMMEDIATELY HIRANYAKASIPU HIT THE PILLAR FURIOUSLY WITH HIS MACE.

LORD VISHNU TOOK THE FORM OF NRUSIMHA (MAN & LION),

WEARING BRAHMA’S SKIN AND HIS DRESS,

TWELVE SUNS[DWATHASA ATHITHYAS] AS GARLAND ,

EIGHT DIRECTIONS (ASHTADHIKBALAS) AS WAIST ROPE, AND

SIVA’S HEAD AS ANKLET. WITH HORRIFING LOOK, HE CAME OUT FROM THE PILLAR, FRIGHTENING EVERY ONE AROUND THE WORLD.

HE TORE THE BLACKISH CHEST OF HIRANYAKASIPU WITH HIS FINGER NAILS. LORD VISHNU WAS VERY ANGRY WITH HIRANYAKASIPU, BECAUSE HE COULD NOT BEAR THE INJUSTICE DONE TO HIS BHAKTHA (PRAHLADHA).

DEVAS WHO WERE PRESENT AT THAT JUNCTURE, DISCUSSED AMONG THEMSELVES

ON HOW TO COOL THE ANGER OF VISHNU. THEY WENT TO KAILASA AND SOUGHT THE HELP OF THREENETHRADHARI SHIVA.THE POOR SHIVA, NOT REALISING THAT LORD NRUSIMHA AS PARABRAHMAM, TOOK THE FORM OF SARABHA AND FOUGHT WITH NRUSIMHA.

NRUSIMHA, WHO TORE THE CHEST OF HIRANYAKASIPU, FOUGHT WITH SARABHA, NULLIFIED HIS POWER AND ASHAMED SARABHA.

DEVAS THEN WENT TO BRAHMA AND SOUGHT HIS HELP. BRAHMA IN TURN, TOGETHER WITH DEVAS OFFERED HIS PRAYERS TO MAHALAKSHMI, WHO APPEARED IMMEDIATELY TO SHOWER HER MERCY TO ALL. LATER, BY ADVISING PRAHLADHA TO PRAY TO LORD NRUSIMHA, SHE CALMED HIS ANGER. THE DEVAS TOO PRAISED LORD VISHNU CHANTING HIS HARI NAMA AND EXCLAIMED VISHNU ALONE IS PARABRAHMAM.

AT THAT JUNCTURE, PARVATHY CAME TO LORD VISHNU AND OFFERED PRAYER TO HIM TO GET BACK HER HUSBAND. LOED VISHNU, OBLIGED TO PARVATHY’S REQUEST AND GOT SANKARA BACK.

THIS IS STATED IN THAITHREEYA UPANISHATH-THRUTHEE YA PRASHNA,

PADMA PURANA, GARUDA PURANA, UPANARASIMHA, UNCOMPARABLE VAMANA PURANA, AGNI PURANA. HENCE THIS SHOULD BE VIEWED UNBIASELY.

THIS IS STATED IN VEDAS & SEVEN PURANAS WHICH CLEARLY EXPLAINS THAT THE NITHYANANDHA ROOPA LORD VISHNU, ALONE IS BRAHMAM AND NOT THE BLACK NECKED SHIVA.

SWAMI KOORATHAZHWAN QUOTED ALL THE ABOVE PRAMANA AND DISCORDED THE CLAIM MADE BY SAIVA PANDITS.

AN APPEAL.

Adiyean Srinivasa Daasan,

W.R.T mail sent by Mr.Parthasarathy Srinivasan, Adiyean is placing a Humble Request

We have our family temple of sri Lakshmi Narasimar near periyapalam Aarani a place

called Madhavaram (not Paal-panai madhavaram), It is an temple which is old about 400

years. Since for work, all of our elder peoples came out ou the Village, they were not able

to maintain the temple. In the beginning of last year all our relatives visited the temple with

our Head Archaghar swami Sri Padhmaban who is a theerthakar of Sriperumbuthur Sri

Emperumaanaar Koil. Based on his words we have collected money within our family &

close circle & built an Vimaanam & samprokshaman was performed in the month of May

2009 in presence of Sri Appan Swamigal (Sriperumbuthur), Now we are collecting

donation from people for daily Pooja, Week Thirumanjam for emperumaan & to extend

the Temple premises. We have donated our land to build a house for temple Archacarar

swami to stay there and do daily rituals. The Rough Estimation of this is calculated about

3lacs. I request you to inform this to your Close circle to contribute for this Kaingaryam as

this perumal has more shakthi that he responds to his bhaktas korikai which is fullfilled

immediatly.

I have also attached the Samproshanam invitation which was performed in the month of

May 2009. I request you to help us by contributing generously.

You can contact my uncle Mr. Parthasarathy @ Chennai His contact #: 9444381910 for

any further information, he will also make arrangements to visit the Temple. You can refer

aadiyean name: K N lakshmanan from Korattur, Chennai Currently working @ Muscat.

Awaiting for your reply.

Due to His mercy There are yogis who are able to see the Lord who resides in their hearts. Those who see God in everything are described as ‘sarvatra sama darshi’ by Lord Krishna.

They see God in everything they behold; they do not distinguish between different things. They know that the atma in everything has the same qualities. But what about those who cannot see the Lord in everything? They can still see the Lord in the form of an idol in temples. Acharyas like Ramanuja have worshipped Lord Narayana in idol form, yet they were undoubtedly great men who could see the Lord in everything. They needed no special impetus to worship. This shows that there is a special quality to the idol form of the Lord, K.B. Devarajan said in a discourse.

Since these great Acharyas saw God in everything, they naturally saw Him in the idols too. In other words, they were the ‘Sarvatra sama darshis’ spoken of by Lord Krishna, but these people, who could see God in everything, still took to the worship of idols in temples, thereby showing the importance of temple worship. We may wonder what is so special about our idols.

We may even ask why we should worship His idol form if He is everywhere. There is no doubting that air is all around us. Does this mean we do not have to fill up the tubes in car tyres with air? We have to, because for our special purpose — namely to make the car run — we need air in the tubes. It is not enough if there is air all around us. It must be there, where we need it. In the same way, God is everywhere, but since we are not people with gnana who are capable of seeing Him in everything, we need to focus on our idols.

But why would Acharyas whose gnana was unsurpassed need to worship temples? They wanted to show to everyone that the Lord is in temples, because of His love for us.

There is no need for the Lord to come down to Earth and enable us to see Him in idol form. He comes only for our sake, to save us.

His presence in temples is an indication of His infinite mercy. Hence our Acharyas paid tributes to His idol form.
