Lord Sri Hayagreeva, The Source Of All Knowledge By Mrs. Shyamala Devulapalli

At the beginning, Lord Sriman Narayana taught Vedas to Brahma, but he was inattentive. Because of this negligence, demons Madhu and Kaitaba arose and stole the Vedas. Later, Brahma did a yagnam (fire sacrifice) for obtaining knowledge. Lord Sriman Narayana appeared as Hayagreeva avatharam out of the fire sacrifice, went to the neither world and neighed very loudly. The demons were scared and fled. Lord Hayagreeva collected the Vedas and taught them to Brahma on the Shravana Poornima day. Brahma attentively listened and retained the knowledge. Therefore, Vedic learning is usually initiated on this day And Hayagreeva is worshiped when beginning any learning venture. Srimad Bhagavatham (2.7.11 and 5.18.16) and other puranas (e.g. Garuda, and Brahmanda) describe the Hayagreeva avatharam. Lord Hayagreeva is the guru of Goddess Saraswati. The word “Hayagreeva” in sanskrit means “Horse neck”. Lord Hayagreeva has the head of a horse with a human body. Lord Hayagreeva is described as brilliant white in color with white garments and seated on a white lotus. He has four lotus hands, with one in the mode of bestowing knowledge, another holding books of wisdom, and two holding the Conch and Discus. Goddess Mahalakshmi is his consort. He is the embodiment of truth, purity and highest consciousness. He has the knowledge and wisdom of the Vedas. Lord Sri Hayagreeva.. (Contd.) conch, wheel and the book in his three hands and displays gnyana mudra with one hand. Hey, Lord Hayagreeva, Salutations to you! You are the form of the holy mind that saves everybody. You are the King of Knowledge.

O Lord Hayagreeva, who has the form of Rig, Yajur and Sama Vedas, who brought these Vedas to earth, who has the shape of the singing of Pranava, and who has a horse head, Salutations to you. Hey Lord Hayagreeva, you are glorified by the holy Pranava, you are the God for all those Gods of words. You are the personification of all Vedas and You are beyond thought. Teach us everything...Salutations to you. ”

Most Vishnu temples in south India have separate shrines for Lord Hayagreeva. There is a Sri Lakshmi Hayagreeva temple in Kumbakonam, and He is the presiding deity of Mysore’s Parakala Mutt. Lord Hayagreeva in Srirangam temple is very famous for children’s education. There is a Lakshmi- Hayagreeva temple in Tirumala. Thiruvahindrapuran is an ancient temple dedicated to Lord Hayagreeva. . Lord Garuda initiated Vedanta Desika into the Hayagreeva mantram. Lord Hayagreeva appeared to Vedanta Desika and gave him a deity of Him-self. All temples dedicated to Vedanta Desika have a deity of Lord Hayagreeva installed near him. Because of Lord Hayagreeva's anugraham, Vendanta Desika was able to compose 1000 slokas of Paduka Sahasram within one day. These slokas are on the footware (Padukas) of Lord Sri Venkateswara and Ranganayaka Swamy. Vedanta Desika’s dyana sloka says, “His beauty, like fresh cut crystal, is an auspicious brilliance that never decays. May this Lord of speech who showers such cooling rays of grace on me be forever manifest in my heart!”

Lord Hayagreeva is the protector of the Vedas and is the very embodiment of knowledge and wisdom. On Shravana poornima, let us pray with our children and perform sharanagati to Lord Hayagreeva for His blessings.

Appearance Day of Lord Sri Krishna: Janmashtami and Sri Jayanthi Dr. Narender P. Reddy, Ph.D.

“Krishno rakshathu-no Jagathraya Guruh, Krishnam namasyaamyaham Krishnena amarashthruvo-vinahithah Krishnaya thasmai namaha Krishna deva samuthitham jagadidam, Krishnasya dasosmyaham Krishne thishtathi sarvam ethadakhilam He Krishna rakshasva maam” ---slokam 33 from the Mukundamala by Kulasekara Azhwar (Alwar)

Meaning: May Sri Krishna, the spiritual master of the three worlds, protect us. My obeisance to Sri Krishna. Krishna has destroyed enemies of devathas. From Krishna alone, this world came into existence. I am the servant of Krishna. This entire universe rests in Krishna. O Sri Krishna please protect me.

The omnipotent, omnipresent and infinite Godhead Lord Sriman Narayana is beyond conception. Full of compassion and eagerness to save mankind, He comes in various vibhava avatharas (man or animal incarnations) to give us the opportunity to see Him with our mortal eyes. Alt-hough Lord Sri Krishna is considered as the eighth main vibhava avatharam, according to the Shruti (i.e. Vedas), He is Supreme Godhead Himself (Full avatharam, swayam Bhagavan). For example, the Narayana Upanishad declares: “Prathyaganandam Brahma Purusham…….Brahmanyo Devaki puthro Brahmanyo Madusudana Om…” which means the son of Devaki is the all blissful Supreme Being. Since we are bound by kama (desire), krodha (anger), lobha (greed), moha (lust), mada (arrogance) and maatsarya (competition) and since we are accumulating mountains of sinful karma birth after birth, we are unable to escape the never ending miserable cycle of birth and death referred to as samsara. The best medicine to get out of the ocean of samsara (and reach the permanent abode nithya vibhoothi/Vaikuntam) is the constant remembrance of the Supreme Being (Paramathma). To make it easy for us to constantly remember Him, Lord Sri Krishna has played innumerous leelas (past times).

Appearance Day of Lord Sri Krishna: Lord Sri Krishna appeared as the eighth son of Devaki and Vasudeva with four hands (but later assumed His two handed form at the request of Vasudeva) at midnight in the lunar month of Shravana on the eighth day (ashtami thithi) of the waning moon (Shravana Bahula Ashtami). The moon was toward the Rohini nakshatram (star). Thus, Shravana Bahula Ashtami is referred to as Janmashtami or Krishnashtami as per the lunar calendar which uses moon’s thithi. However, followers of the solar calendar celebrate appearance days according to the Sun’s rashi and the moon’s nakshatram. At the time of His birth, the Sun was in the Simha Rashi (Zodiac). Thus, they celebrate His appearance day when the Sun is in Simha rashi and moon pointing to Rohini nakshatram. This is referred to as Sri Jayanthi or Pancharathra Sri Jayanthi. This year the Janmashtami is on August 17th and Sri Jayanthi is on September 15th. (Contd on Page 4…)

About Bhadrachalam The Sree Seetha Ramachandra Swamy shrine at Bhadrachalam, the most famous temple in the country dedicated to Lord Rama, is situated on the left bank of the Godavari river. It is a place of pilgrimage for Hindus, considered to be one of the greatest holy shrines in South India with a very rich and unique historical background. The Temple was constructed in the 17th Century by the local Tahsildar, Kancharla Gopanna, popularly known as Bhakta Ramadas, a fervent devotee of Lod Sree Rama. The puranic and historic facts relate that Lord Rama long after he had shed his mortal coils manifested himself to save his devotee Bhadra Maharshi whom he promised 'moksha' after intensive prayer. That is why the village is named after Bhadra as Bhadradri or Bhadrachalam. Srirama appeared in a dream to a woman called Pokala Dammakka and informed here about the existence of vigrahas on Bhadragiri hills. To her surprise she found the "Vigrahas" and put up a modest structure. This was the origin of the present temple. Read more HERE

Appearance Day of Lord Sri Krishna: Janmashtami and Sri Jayanthi (Contd…) Lord Sri Krishna displayed His vibhava avatharam for 125 years and four months. The sinful Kaliyuga started on the day when Lord Krishna con-cluded His vibhava avatharam and disappeared. The present year is 5116th year of Kaliyuga which means 5115 years have passed since the be-ginning of Kaliyuga (time Lord Sri Krishna went back to Vaikuntam). Therefore, scholars using computer calculations have placed the appearance year of Lord Sri Krishna as 3226 B.C.

Krishna Avatharam: Upon His instructions, Vasudeva transferred the infant Krishna to Nanda’s house in Gokulam and laid Him on the bed of mother Yashoda (when everyone was in deep sleep) while exchanging Yashoda’s new born baby with Krishna. Waking up in the morning, every-one thought that Krishna was Yashoda’s baby. In Sri Rama avatharam, Sri Rama started killing demons (dushta shikshana) only after he became a youth. On the other hand, Sri Krishna started doing the dushta shikshana (punishing the wicked) and sishta rakshana (protecting the pious) even when He was a baby. For instance, He sucked the life (along with milk) out of the wicked Putana. Putana, a demon, came with poison soaked breasts to kill Krishna in the guise of a cowherd lady and started breast feeding Krishna. He also killed Shakataura (The demon in the guise of a cart). Krishna’s divine pastimes: Lord Sri Krishna soon became the darling of the cowherds. He displayed innumerable leelas and pranks as He was growing up. His pastimes of stealing of butter and playing pranks on the cowherd girls are well known. Mother Yashoda could not bear the complaints of the gopikas and wanted to punish Him by tying Him with a rope. Although Yashoda was initially not able to tie him up, she finally succeeded in tying Him with a rope to a heavy grinding stone. Krishna is the Supreme Being, who is the creator of all the universes and beyond. When even all the demigods (Brahma, Shiva, Indra, etc) and the meditating rishis/yogis could not capture Him, mother Yashoda was able to capture Lord Krishna. Only the rope of Bhakti and the unconstrained intense love from mother Yashoda could bind Him. Because His belly had been tied, He is called Damodara (dama= constrained; udara = belly). Krishna pulled and rolled the stone in between two tall trees. When the trees fell, Nalakubera and Manigreeva appeared out of the trees, relieving them of their curse. He tendered cows. He played and ate with oth-er cowherd boys. All of these activities show His soulabyam. The Supreme Being, who is beyond all the demigods, was playing with uneducated cowherd boys and girls. This divine attribute (kalyana gunam) of being available to everybody is called soulabyam. On one occasion, playing another prank, He stole the clothes of the cowherd girls when they were bathing naked in a nearby lake. His rasa leela in Vrindavan with the cowherd girls is well known. He did all of these pranks and plays to remove all the sins of His subjects. He did all these such that our mind runs to Him. “Dadi choram, Gritha choram, gopangana chela choram, anganaa choram, Aneka janmarjitha papa choram, Choragraganyam, tham aham bhajami” (Butter thief, yogurt thief, thief of sarees, thief of girls, the thief of sin accumulated in many lives, Oh chief of thieves, I pray to you). Krishna, the protector of the innocent and the pious: Krishna always protected the pious and the innocent. For example, He provided shelter to the cows and the cowherds during continuous thunderstorms (Devendra’s [king of demigods aka demigod Indra] wrath). He lifted the Govarda-na hill and used it as an umbrella to provide shelter. In response to Krishna’s compassion, the celestial cow Surabhi came and installed Krishna as the king (Indra) of cows (Gava), thus giving Him the title Gava Indra (King of cows) which in usage became Govinda. Because this is His earned title, He is fond of this name and He responds very quickly to the name Govinda. Krishna, the destroyer of the wicked: While tendering cows in the forest, Krishna killed numerous demons (including Agasura, Vatsasura, Bakas-ura, Kesi etc.) who were sent by Kamsa. The evil Kamsa invited Krishna to witness dhanur yagam where he arranged for an elephant (Kuvalaya peedam) and two strong wrestlers to kill Krishna. Instead, Krishna eliminated the elephant and the wrestlers, killed Kamsa, and released His pious grandparents from Kamsa’s jail. In later years, at the request of devatas (demigods), Krishna, along with His wife Satybhama, flew on Garuda to Pragjodishapuram (the capital city of demon Naraka). First, His wife Satybhama fought with Naraka. Then, Krishna took over and killed the demon Naraka. Through robots, Narkasura had earlier invaded the deva lokam (the planet of the demigods) and defeated devas. To insult devas, Naraka stole Aditi’s (Indra’s mother) earrings. After killing Naraka, Krishna and Satyabhama flew to the planet of devas and gave back the earrings to Aditi. From deva loka, Krishna brought the Parijatha tree to the earth. Banasura was a demon who got a boon from Shiva for his protection. Lord Sri Krishna first had to fight with Shiva and quell his Shiva Jwaram (missile producing extremely high temperature) with His Vishnu jwaram (missile with extreme cold temperature) rendering Shiva unconscious. Then, at the request of Shiva to show mercy to Bansu-ra, Krishna cut off several of Banasura’s arms but did not kill him.

Krishna Marries Rukmini: The first love letter ever written was sent by Rukmini (an incarnation of Goddess Lakshmi). Rukmini’s brother ar-ranged for the marriage of Rukmini with evil Shishupala, whom Rukmini did not like. She wrote a letter to Krishna and sent it through a messen-ger requesting Krishna to come and take her hand in marriage by defeating Shishupala and his evil friends. After defeating them, Krishna brought Rukmini to His capital city Dwaraka and married her. He also married seven others representing the ashta Lakshmi forms.
