first residency with our Kindergarten, first and second graders. They arelooking forward to making a beautiful glass and tile mosaic into an inspired3D star shape.

Thanks to our auction last spring and a grant we are able to cover theentire cost of the residency. Parent and guardians raised money at ourauction last spring and Telia Rusin wrote a grant to Far West Fibers. Thank you Telia! We appreciate all your efforts. West TV can’t wait to seehow the final project turns out. This really should be absolutely stunning.

Safe Routes to School Update On November 6, 2016, we set our clocks back an hour, making itdarker earlier in the afternoon. With shorter days this time of year, motorists, bicyclists, and pedestrians need to be extra alert to seeeach other in low light situations. Improving visibility meansimproving safety for all road users. Wearing light colors or reflectiveclothing is one of the simplest things pedestrians and cyclists can todo keep themselves safe. Here are additional suggestions to help keep you safe while walkingand biking: • Wear bright, reflective clothing, and shoes when walking orbiking. • Don’t wear headphones, text or talk on a cell phone while crossingthe street. • Be aware of vehicles around you. Make eye contact beforecrossing in front of vehicles. • Don’t assume that cars see you or are going to stop. • Driving or biking? Expect and slow down for pedestrians in popularwalking areas, around schools and parks, and near crosswalks. When more people walk, bike, and take the bus it makes the routeto school safer, less congested and more fun for everyone. Thankyou for continuing to walk, bike, and use the bus. It’s the way to go!

Attribute for November This month, the All Stars will focus on being reflective. As part ofthe International Baccalaureate Learner Profile, being reflective isdefined when we thoughtfully consider the world and our own ideasand experience. We work to understand our strengths andweaknesses in order to support our learning and personaldevelopment. What this looks like in an elementary school is: * students thoughtfully reflecting on what they’ve learned and howto share their learning with others * teachers meeting collaboratively to plan and write lessons thatwill challenge, interest, and reach students at their level of academic

need * parents, teachers, administrators, school staff all partneringtogether to create a safe, active, experiential, and fun environmentfor the students

The Learner Profile is an important aspect of the PYP. Theseattributes help people become responsible members of an evergrowing (and shrinking) world where we interact with people from allover the globe. These traits create global citizens that are able tocommunicate, problem solve, and think critically, making themleaders and role models. It is wonderful to hear the students usethe Learner Profile language and recognize the attributes inthemselves. Library News Interest is growing for Oregon Battle of the Books (OBOB). This is afree, optional and competitive reading program for students thirdthrough fifth grade. All sixteen books will be ready in our schoollibrary for checkout next week. Teams of four or five students (mixed grade levels are fine) join as ateam for an allschool tournament beginning in January. The“battles” are held during school hours four team members againstanother team of four. A battle consists of eight trivia questionsabout any of the 16 books and eight questions pertaining to the titleand author’s name. Official rules for play are found on thewebsite, www.oboblsta.pbworks.com . The champion West TVteam will then move on to regional competition from Columbia,Washington, Clatsop and Tillamook Counties. Those winners willmove on to state competition; our Lightning Books shined there lastyear.

Teams will be forming in November and early December. Aregistration form signed by the parent or guardian is required thisyear to ensure parent awareness of their student’s activities. Haveyour son or daughter ask Mrs. Van Kleek about obtaining a form ifyou missed yours at conferences. Most of the teams could use thehelp of a parent coach. The coach pulls the team together afterschool for practice questions, strategic planning (who’s readingwhich books) and reviewing the rules. Shelli Kime is the parentchair for this year’s events. She can be reachedat [email protected] . The Cedar Mill and Bethany Libraries are offering supportiveactivities during winter break. Details are yet to be released. Students will learn about those dates and times during regularlibrary class times. Hearing Screenings

20172019 District Calendar Survey

The Beaverton School District staff and community are invited to assistwith the selection of the 20172018 and 20182019 District calendars byselecting their preferred calendar option for each of the two years. TheCommunity Survey will be open through November 30, 2016. The finalcalendars will be announced and posted on the District's website prior towinter break. Key differences are outlined below. Due to the opening or moving offour schools in 20172018, calendar choices for that year only allbegin after Labor Day on Tuesday, September 5, 2017. Beginningprior to Labor Day would increase bond construction costs andjeopardize the District's ability to open these schools on time. The District is adding nine (9) student days over three years andimplementing a weekly 90minute early release, beginning September2017, for teacher collaboration and professional development. Details areavailable on the District's website. 20172018 Key Differences:
