Imagine students studying Prohibition and learning about the impact of those years on the many breweries that had flourished across German Village. Or studying the meaning of urban renewal and learning how the Interstate System changed the face of Columbus and wiped out historic neighborhoods. Those are two of dozens of digital video segments and lesson plans developed by our educational team as a part of the landmark Columbus Neighborhoods project.
Columbus Neighborhoods in the Classroom are short digital videos designed by and for teachers to use with lesson plans and other reference materials aligned with state academic standards.
This educational project was recognized in October at the National Educational Telecommunications Association (NETA) Conference as the best use of digital media in the classroom. NETA represents nearly every public TV station in America and its awards are highly coveted.
These segments hit home because they are about OUR home. Remnants related to many of the lessons are alive and well down the street or a short drive away.
You can review all these short segments and, if you are an educator, access
these to use in your classroom at the columbusneighborhoods.org web site — just click on “Lesson Plans.”
This is the kind of work WOSU’s Marcelita Haskins has been developing for decades to better serve teachers across central and southern Ohio. We celebrate Marcelita and all those involved in the project. Using our media production creativity to improve student performance and assist teachers is a prime goal of WOSU Public Media.
A special thanks to the State of Ohio and the Ohio Humanities Council for providing the support necessary to produce Columbus Neighborhoods in the Classroom.

Voters Reject Columbus School Levy – Now What?
By Michael Thompson, News and Public Affairs Director
After a year of reading headlines and listening to stories about data rigging and faced with a 24% increase in school property taxes, Columbus City School District voters loudly said “No” to the $9.01 million levy.
So, now what?
Mayor Michael Coleman and levy supporters spent nearly a year coming up with a reform plan and pushing hard for the levy’s passage. Supporters raised and spent more than $2.2 million to convince voters that “The levy is the reform.”
Voters by a two-to-one margin did not buy it.
There is a decent chance the schools will try again and ask for higher taxes, and speculation is that could come as early as May. In the meantime, here are some of the things
89.7 NPR News reporters will be watching for as they continue their coverage:
1. Levy Amount: The levy proposal would have cost property owners $315 for each $100,000 in property value. For an average house in Columbus that would have been a $450 increase in property taxes. For a typical house in Clintonville or Victorian Village which are more expensive, homeowners were looking at $700–$1,000-a-year tax hike. That was a huge factor in the levy’s defeat. After losing once, school districts almost always lower the levy request the second time, and the lower level has a much better success rate.
2. Reforms: Voters soundly rejected the claim that Columbus City Schools needed the extra money to fix a system plagued by scandal and failing schools. Critics charged
Columbus Mayor Michael Coleman and Columbus City Schools Interim Superintendent (not pictured) appeared on a special edition of WOSU TV’s Columbus on the Record to discuss the levy.
the reforms lacked specific measurements and maintained the changes should come before the tax increase. School officials likely will have to wait until the investigation into the data rigging scandal is complete before going back to the ballot. And look for a little more “house cleaning” by interim superintendent Dan Good aimed at convincing voters to accept higher taxes.
3. Charter Schools: School levy requests rely heavily on the support of teachers and parents, but the Columbus proposal lost some of that support because it would have sent $8.5 million to privately run charter schools. The Columbus PTA refused to endorse the levy and some teachers quietly complained that levy money only should pay for district schools. Levy supporters will have to consider whether to include charter school funding in the next request. Or they could put it on the ballot as a separate issue.
Nearly everyone in the district agrees the status quo is not acceptable and Columbus Schools need help. The levy campaign reform effort worked tirelessly to bring together nearly all of the city’s business and community leaders — an unprecedented accomplishment. But to pass the levy, those leaders need one more group to join them — the voters.
For a look back at WOSU’s comprehensive coverage of the Columbus School Levy, go to wosu.org/levy.
