What’s a General Conference Special Session? Why now? Excerpted from a UMC.org feature by Joe Iovino
In February 2019, The United Methodist Church will hold a special session of General Conference, something that has only happened once before in our 50 year history. Our bishops called this gathering, at the request of the 2016 General Conference, to help us find a way forward through our deep disagreements about same-sex marriage and the ordination of LGBTQ clergy. All decisions about how the church functions are made by the General Conference, a gathering of the worldwide church every four years. No single person, not even the Council of Bishops, can speak for The United Methodist Church. Only the General Conference can. According to the Book of Discipline, the General Conference has full legis-lative power “over all matters distinctively connectional” (¶ 16). This means that all decisions about our life together as The United Methodist Church are made by this body. This representative group of between 600 and 1,000 dele-gates elected by their annual conferences is the denomination’s legislative body. Half of the delegates are clergy and half laity. In 2016, the 864 delegates to the General Conference in Portland, Oregon, authorized the bishops to form a body that would help us navigate our differences. At the 2019 Special Session, the General Conference will receive and act on the report of that group, the Commission on a Way Forward.

A quick note from Finance,
Our mortgage refinance with Texas Methodist Foundation is in the final stages; and once signed off as request-
ed, we will start paying a $600 monthly payment with a final payment made in about 8 years. It will be great to
get the church mortgage paid off. The roof is done and we will have contractors in shortly to fix the damage
done on the inside of the church from the leaky roofs. All of this work paid from insurance monies. Your Fi-
nance team voted and passed the 2019 budget, which has a 13% reduction from the 2018 budget. I pray that
2019 will be a year our membership grows and a year we help our neighbors.
The Lord is growing and working in our church. Let us
take the light outside the walls and let it shine. God
bless and guide you and your family throughout the
year!
Thank you All for what you do at FUMC of Watauga!

All youth are invited to assist in serving an AGAPE MEAL at Broadway Baptist Church in Ft. Worth. This meal is an op-portunity to share the love of God with the hungry and homeless residents of the community. We will meet at our church at 4:30, January 17th, to drive to Broadway Baptist Church in Ft. Worth. We will return to First United Meth-odists Church of Watauga by 8:00 PM. We hope you will join us! Agape refers to the highest form of love, the love of God for man and man for God. By extension, it refers to the love of others.

About a month ago, a few young gentlemen came to the
Shepherd Shop to buy some winter clothes. They had
mentioned that their mom used to shop here when they
were younger and seemed excited that we were still
open. These young men looked about the age where they
were just starting on their adult adventures and it warmed my heart to know that we were helping them in some
way. Many people in our community can’t afford to buy nice new clothes, jackets, etc. The Shepherd Shop is im-
portant in the community as we can provide donated items that people can afford. Please tell your friends and fam-
ily about our shop and share the Facebook posts to your own pages by clicking “share’ on the bottom right of the
post.
Sandwiches for Presbyterian Night Shelter As many of you know, we meet the first Monday of each month at the church to make about 500 bologna and cheese sandwiches for the homeless. Mrs. Baird's donates the bread. All donations of mustard, sliced cheese, bologna, and sandwich bags (not ziplock) are appreciated and needed. Also, if you would like to help, you are more than welcome to join us. We begin at 6:30 PM and are usually finished around 8:00 PM. It's a good way to fellowship and to help the homeless!

Souper Bowl Sunday The annual soup drive is starting early to accomplish our goal of 2019 cans to donate to N.E.E.D. Start bringing soup now to help fill the shelves of NEED. By February of 2019, when the drive finishes, we want to have our goal met. So, remember to pick-up a few cans of soup when you’re at the grocery store to help those who are in need. God Bless!
Help keep kids fed! Help us provide food so kids don’t go hungry over the weekends. Help pack snacks for kids each Sunday right after the 2nd service or donate snacks for kids. A list of items is in the Narthex.
Know how to sing or play an instrument? Darin Hoppe, our choir director, and the Praise Team would love to have you join them. They practice on Thursday evenings. The Lord is growing and working in our church. Let us take the light outside the walls and let it shine. Thank you All for what you do at FUMC Watauga!
