Most people do not know this, but I have a first cousin who is a priest in this diocese, Fr. Richard Piontkowski. Fr. Richard is considerably older than me and when he was Rector at the Cathedral and I was his lowly Associate, he found great joy in embarrassing me in front of the congregation. On various weeks, we would make some comment and inevitably I would get his words usually followed by a chuckle. Case in point, he loved to tell the parishioners at the Cathedral that he didn’t know many Pastors who changed their Associate’s diapers…which actually was true….when I was an infant…he would just conveniently leave that part out! Reading through his occasional ramblings on the internet he told the following story: “During these virus days of closed Churches and open pubs (carry out only), the internet has galloped to the rescue of methodical Masses and homey homilies by streaming the Eucharist from local parishes. TV Masses have been around for long time and have a love/hate relationship with the clergy. Then: “How can people even think a Mass on TV approaches the sacramental grace of being present at a Eucharistic celebration?” Now: “Stay home and watch Mass on TV; it’s just like the real thing!” Also these electronic Eucharists are proliferating at the rate rabbits breed. A parishioner texted last Sunday that they were on their third Mass of the morning; all being streamed on line from nearby parishes. “Father, why don’t you stream your Mass today on the internet so we can see it too?” First, I hate to be in fourth place; second, how many celebrations of the Lord’s Supper are enough for one morning? A potential game show comes to mind; we’ll call it, The Sacramental Showcase Showdown Local priests will vie on this must see TV to be the next Fulton J. Sheen, or, dare we dream, the next Robert Barron? Pastors will be judged by the discerning Catholics on line in regard to: fit of vestments, ruthlessly observing the rubrics, pacing of prancing, hairstyle; hygiene, length of homily, the amount of wine consecrated, etc. In the comment sections of YouTube, Facebook et al, couch consecrators will be invited to vote for their favorite celebrant and leave observations. “It has to be Fr. Pharan Heidt from St. Celsius. He’s a good looking priest and his words were so personal, it was like I was at Church.” “I really didn’t like any of them. What’s with the purple? Don’t they know it looks bad on screen? Whoever in charge of make up needs to get with it.” “Fr. Refulgence was the best one on the Showcase! He used the 1962 Napa Chantilly Merlot, right out of the bottle into that gorgeous 24 carat gold chalice with twelve amethysts symbolizing the twelve something or other. Nothing’s too good for the people at St. Mercedes!” “Fr. Bill’s handmade chasuble consisting of felt ribbons and pictures of starving cats really made an impression on me. His use of matzo crackers and a jug of Mogen David brought the Eucharist home. That beautiful preparation of the gifts procession using nine blighted potatoes and four homeless dogs heightened my social sensibility and edged my soul crystal into brilliance.” “How could you compare any Mass to Fr. Serious Brunet of St. Demetrius the Demented? His Latin, when it could be heard, was flawless. His gestures, when they could be seen, were precise and crisp. That beautiful St. Philip Neri style fiddleback chasuble with the inlay picture of robbers beating a poor man half to death, no doubt from the Good Samaritan parable, raised my eyes in joy to God. As usual, Father finished the Mass in two and a half rosaries. He has to win the Showcase; it was the only valid Mass.” As much as we talk about the immutability of God, we sometimes ignore the adaptiveness the Holy Spirit brings to the Church. Through wars, plagues, insurrections, natural disasters, the Church finds a way, with God’s help, to take care of her people. A cursory glance at history exhibits the Church reaching out, caring for and finding ways to minister to all. Always the Church comes out of crisis stronger for serving her Lord Jesus in His people. To be Pro-Life is also to be Pro-Next Life; this is the goal of salvation, whether through the grace of a sacrament participated, or the actual grace of a mind raised to God by watching a live stream.” While we jest about internet masses, it was the only connection we had in the midst of the church’s closure. It was and still is a gift for many who are not comfortable returning to mass. Last weekend, I announced that should the community of Scottsbluff enter the Orange zone on the Panhandle Public Health District’s meter, the Scottsbluff/Gering parishes are requiring masks when we are in the Orange (high) or Red (Severe) zones. Every week we will publish that meter (on page 3) so people know where we stand. People’s health should be our greatest concern and so in charity, I ask you, please wear a mask to church when in these zones. I have learned a lot about doing internet masses…and while I am not sure which group I would fit into (in Fr. Richard’s ramblings), I do know this: it has been a great blessing while we cannot gather our full community. Pray God, for a speedy end to this pandemic. God Bless you!

This Week’s Readings
For the health and safety of our volunteers and parish community, the Altar Society
has decided to cancel this year’s Fall Dinner. Though the Fall Dinner is the Altar Society’s only fundraiser, the Committee
felt that any risk was too much of a risk to take.
We ask that you prayerfully consider a monetary donation directly to the Altar Society this year instead. Any financial
assistance is greatly appreciated since the Society will still have obligations to fulfill in order to provide the support to the parish
that we are built on. Donations can be made to the Parish Office at P.O. Box 349, Scottsbluff NE 69363. Please make checks
payable to St. Agnes Altar Society.

THE LITURGY of the WORD
First Reading - Isaiah 25:6-10a (142A) On this mountain the LORD of hosts will provide for all peoples a feast of rich food and choice wines, juicy, rich food and pure, choice wines. On this mountain he will destroy the veil that veils all peoples, the web that is woven over all nations; he will destroy death forever. The Lord GOD will wipe away the tears from every face; the reproach of his people he will remove from the whole earth; for the LORD has spoken. On that day it will be said: “Behold our God, to whom we looked to save us! This is the LORD for whom we looked; let us rejoice and be glad that he has saved us!” For the hand of the LORD will rest on this mountain.

Responsorial Psalm Second Reading - Philippians 4:12-14, 19-20 Brothers and sisters: I know how to live in humble circumstances; I know also how to live with abundance. In every circumstance and in all things I have learned the secret of being well fed and of going hungry, of living in abundance and of being in need. I can do all things in him who strengthens me. Still, it was kind of you to share in my distress. My God will fully supply whatever you need, in accord with his glorious riches in Christ Jesus. To our God and Father, glory forever and ever. Amen.
Please stand Gospel Alleluia May the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ enlighten the eyes of our hearts, so that we may know what is the hope that belongs to our call. Gospel - Matthew 21:1-14 or 22:1-10 Jesus again in reply spoke to the chief priests and elders of the people in parables, saying, “The kingdom of heaven may be likened to a king who gave a wedding feast for his son. He dispatched his servants to summon the invited guests to the feast, but they refused to come. A second time he sent other servants, saying, ‘Tell those invited: “Behold, I have prepared my banquet, my calves and fattened cattle are killed, and everything is ready; come to the feast.”’ Some ignored the invitation and went away, one to his farm, another to his business. The rest laid hold of his servants, mistreated them, and killed them. The king was enraged and sent his troops, destroyed those murderers, and burned their city. Then he sad to his servants, ‘The feast is ready, but those who were invited were not worthy to come. Go out, therefore, into the main roads and invite to the feast whomever you find.’ The servants went out into the streets and gathered all they found, bad and good alike, and the hall was filled with guests. [But when the king came in to meet the guests, he saw a man there not dressed in a wedding garment. The king said to him, ‘My friend, how is it that you came in here without a wedding garment?’ But he was reduced to silence. Then the king said to his attendants, ‘Bind his hands and feet, and cast him into the darkness outside, where there will be wailing and grinding of teeth.’ Many are invited, but few are chosen.”]

Homily Notes _____________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________ Please stand Nicene Creed I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and our salvation he came down from heaven, and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins, and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Celebrating Sunday for Catholic Families
Twenty-eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Gospel: Matthew 22:1-10
On the Way to Mass: Has anyone ever declined your invitation? How did it make you feel? On the Way Home From Mass: God is always inviting us to come to him. How do we respond to his invitation? Living the Word: Together, make a list of all the ways you can be ready to prepare for God’s presence in your life. How can your heart be ready? How can your mind be ready? How can your hands be ready? This week, before bed, make a list of the ways God was active throughout the day. Did you talk to people with kindness? Did you try to think as Jesus would? Did you see the good in people? How does preparing for God’s presence help you be more welcoming to the love of Jesus throughout your day?

Teach children to
pray for miracles
Prayer is part of our nature as Christians. In prayer, we
praise God, ask for favors for others, and pray when we have a need. As Catholic parents, we want children to pray and trust God for answers, but what do we do when our experience tells us only a miracle will help? Teach children to overcome doubt with faith. Adults want to protect children from disappointment, but we never need to protect them from God. Overcoming doubt with faith is part of friendship with Christ. Letting children wrestle with their faith helps build a faith that can withstand the trials that may lie ahead. Talk about God’s history of answering big prayers. For example, Jonah prayed for his life to be spared from the belly of the whale, and God saved him (Jonah 2). St. Paul asked for and received the ability to heal Publius’ ailing father and other sick villagers (Acts 28:7-9). When Elijah prayed for rain, “the heavens gave rain” (James 5:13-18). We know that prayer is our first and best strategy when we need a miracle. Encourage children to surrender. It’s human to focus on the results of prayer rather than God’s ability to answer. Teach children to expect an answer to every prayer and trust that the result will be the best God wants for us.

Leader in Me Students St. Agnes students will continue their work to grow as leaders this school year as we move forward with the
program, The Leader in Me. Habit #1, Be Proactive, was the focus of September. Students who are proactive take charge of themselves. They choose a sunny vs. stormy attitude and maintain a “can do” outlook. Proactive
students take responsibility for their actions and don’t blame others. The following students were recognized as
the Proactive student for their respective grades: Pre-K: Drew Becker, Kindergarten: Lewis Merrigan, 1st
Grade: Holly Polk, 2nd Grade:
Kensignton Suhr, 3rd Grade: Havynn
Urdiales, 4th Grade:
Lizbeth Cabrera and
5th Grade: Lillian Seymour.
Golden Rule The first Golden Rule ceremony was held on Friday,
October 2nd on the school playground. Over 80 golden rules were given for good deeds done during the month of September. Students and staff were recognized and received a golden certificate and a small prize for their good works. The Golden Rule program inspires our students to work to be the
hands and feet of Christ as we serve others. They are always reminded that we do these good deeds not for the recognition
of a gold coupon, but
because we are good Christians
who are working to
answer God’s call.
Teacher Convention St. Agnes teachers attended the diocesan teacher
convention held virtually on Monday, Oct. 5th. The 8 diocesan schools, gathered at their individual schools to hear Jean Mandernauch speak on Remote Learning
Pedagogy and Father Jim Golka
address Our Catholic Identity. Each
school also held Mass, on site for
their staff. St. Agnes teachers enjoyed lunch courtesy of
the Flyover Brewery.

What’s Happening at St. Agnes School………...
Second Grade Class By Lori Svitak
Wow! It is already the first part of October and we have been in school for eight weeks. We continue to stay busy as usual.
Our class has finished up on our MAPS testing on the chrome books. The students were troopers. They worked hard on their tests and took their job seriously. I am proud of how their results turned out, considering all the time they were out of the classroom in the spring. Parents, you did good! The highlight of last month was celebrating International Dot Day. On this day we did many activities that had to do with dots. Some of these activities were:
learning about Morse Code and Braille, deciphering a code done only in dots, designing one-quarter of a circle to be put together with three other student’s to create a full circle design, and finally building a tower with Dot candy and toothpicks. The three boys in the class made the tallest tower! We carried this theme over into science, doing two experiments. One was using Skittles and hot water to create a rainbow. The other experiment was to see how many drops of water would fit on a penny before it spilled over the rim. The most was 30 drops. This amazed the students! In art, we continued with our dots and made Aboriginal Hand Paintings. Each child traced their hand on black paper. Using Q-tips and paint, they painted around their hand with dots. These turned out very pretty.
In reading, we have finished the first unit of our reading series and are starting on the next. When we finish a unit, we play a game with our vocabulary words. The students lay all the vocabulary cards out on the floor of our room. Then the two students race to find the word that I called out. It is very competitive and a very fun way to review our words.
Happy September birthdays to Mila Miller and Rheanne Owens!
Fifth Grade Class By Liz Salazar
Wow! This past month has blown by so quickly. The fifth graders are working hard on staying on the routine of school. They are currently working on the following skills in math: story problems about combining and separating groups, properties of multiplication, reviewing the division algorithm, and we are beginning to work with fractions, equivalent fractions, and percents. In science, we have been investigating matter. Our current lessons have been on the different states of matter and how substances can change from one state to another, for example water can be liquid, solid (ice), and gas (vapor). In social studies, we are learning about the early European explorers, who came to the New World. We have read about how the Spaniards wanted to settle in the world in order to reach Asia, claim new land, and to spread Christianity. We have also been discussing Hispanic Heritage month. We have completed an art project, a Ojo de Dios, a God’s eye. We will be doing other activities to honor this month including; reading books, creating crafts, and learning about Hispanic individuals that have contributed to our world. In reading, we have been working on the following skills; visualizing, making connections to the texts we are reading, and comprehension. We have also had some review on parts to speech, idioms, and sequence. It has been a very busy month, but we are so pleased to be able to continue to do in person school. We have really enjoyed being with our classmates!
