Dear St. Francis Parishioners, After extensive thought and lots and lots of prayerful consideration, I have resigned my position in the Religious Education program at St. Francis. I began volunteering for Religious Education thirteen years ago when I became an “empty nester”. The love, joy, and fulfillment I found in serving our youngest parishioners led me to become the RE Director seven years ago. My time here has been one that I will always treasure. My heart is filled with wonderful memories of our children and families, as I shared their faith journey with them. I intend to continue as part of this parish as I leave its employment. In fact, knowing this has helped me – knowing that when I come to Mass each week I’ll still get to see all of you, the volunteers, the parish staff, families and children I love and care about so much. I will always be grateful for my time here at St. Francis, especially the love, support, and kindness of our parish family. I feel blessed to have been able to serve Christ in such a special way, and make a difference in the lives of our precious children over the past thirteen years. I will look forward to seeing you all at Mass.

St. Francis of Assisi Food Outreach Programs Update (Barbara Mertz and Flint Brenton, Co-Chairpersons, St. Francis Food Outreach Programs)

With Fr. Jorge Herrera's sponsorship, we are very excited to announce the start of our Food Ministry for the Spring, Summer, and Fall of 2021. Once again, we will partner with Catholic Charities of Reno. The Lord greatly blessed us in 2020, as we served the equivalent of 10,100 meals to families in need in the form of groceries. The will be supported within our parish by a partnership between the Knights of Columbus and the newly formed Women's Ministry of St. Francis. Lorena Herrera ([email protected]) and Vern Howard ([email protected]) will serve as co-supervisors for this exciting ministry. We will begin this service on Thursday, May 20. Food distribution will occur starting at 4:00 and ending at 6:00 pm. Volunteers should plan to arrive at 3:15 and depart at 6:30 pm. Those wishing to volunteer for this exciting ministry should reach out via email to Lorena and Vern to express for interest. Please use this link to sign up if you are interested in volunteering with food pantry. We wish to thank the entire St. Francis Community for supporting and participating in this high impact community!

ETERNAL LIFE

As we celebrate Christ’s ascension into heaven, we recall that He is not of this world… nor were we made for this world. We were made for eternal life! Our readings this weekend remind us that we are called to be set apart as Disciples of Christ. Certainly not an easy task. In our Gospel, Jesus prays to God the Father, “I gave them your word, and the world hated them, because they do not belong to the world any more than I belong to the world.” While we were not made for this earthly world, we were made to be saints, truly a calling that is out of this world. Do we graciously use our time, talents and treasures to serve and glorify God? Are they put to good use? Our lives as Christian Disciples should be a direct reflection of Who we belong to. Jesus clearly prayed, “I do not ask that you take them out of the world but that you keep them from the evil one.” We are called to live in this world and to not become consumed by it. We need to keep our minds and hearts fixed on our goal — eternal life. Jesus’ ascension is a good reminder for us that we, too, are called to heaven. Let us strive to live our lives with this in mind.

VIDA ETERNA

Women’s Ministry Corner Please stop by the Women’s Ministry table in the gathering area after Mass this weekend to learn more about all the Women’s Ministry Team has planned for the women of St. Francis of Assisi! You will have the opportunity to sign up for activities you would like to join, and to provide your contact information so that we may keep you informed of upcoming events. Women of all ages and stages are welcome. Hope to see you!

Outdoor Rosary: Due to the positive response we had for the outdoor rosary on May 7th, we've decided to recite this lovely tribute to Mary in front of our Madonna of the Streets statue in the garden on the 2nd Tuesday of our summer months, weather permitting. We will be praying the rosary prior to our noon Mass and everyone is invited. Women of the parish are also invited to attend Mass together as a cohesive group after the rosary. So, mark your calendars for June 8, July 13, August 10 and September 14 for our outdoor rosary and Women's Ministry Mass.

FROM THE LIFE, PEACE, and JUSTICE COMMISSION

Do you know and love Catholic Social Teaching? Do you know little about Catholic Social Teaching, but would like to learn more?

Do you try to live by three fundamental principles of Catholic Teaching? 1) The innate and unending dignity of each human person; 2) the Common Good; 3) Solidarity. Would you like to understand these concepts better?

Do you feel called to live your faith beyond your parish boundaries?

Consider joining the Life, Peace & Justice Commission of the Diocese of Reno. It would be wonderful for the Commission to have representation from every parish in our diocese, something much more doable with ZOOM technology in our present day.

“Our redemption has a social dimension because ‘God, in Christ, redeems not only the individual person, but also the social relations existing between men,” Joy of the Gospel, #148.

Contact Rita Sloan, Coordinator for the Life, Peace & Justice Commission at [email protected] or (775) 849-1653 or Father Chuck Durante, Chair of the Life, Peace & Justice Commission at [email protected].
