World Space Week is the largest public space event on Earthsince its declaration by United Nations in 1999. The General Assemblydeclares 4 to 10 October as ‘World Space Week’ to celebrate each yearat the international level the contributions of space science andtechnology to the betterment of the human life.

World Space week is an excellent opportunity for schools totake up space-related educational activities to generate interest andcuriosity among school children. Schools are solicited to celebrate WorldSpace Week during October 4 to 10, 2014 by organizing various eventsand competitions based on the theme “Space: Guiding Your Way”. Thetheme highlights the benefits of satellite navigation to humankind andthe applications of satellite navigation, in road navigation, in aviation,shipping, agriculture, disaster recovery and many other areas in society.The events organized at schools can be anything novel and innovative,centered on this year’s theme.

Schools can prepare a report on the activities conducted andsend it to WSW Office at VSSC along with the completed summary sheetprovided in the website. Merit certificates for the winners of schoollevel competitions will be issued by VSSC through the Head of theInstitution. The school which organizes the event in the most effectivemanner in each revenue district of Kerala will receive an award.General guidelines for (1) conducting various events at school level (2)preparation of the consolidated report on the various events conducted(3) Summary sheet in the prescribed format and (4) sending the reportsto ‘WSW@Schools ‘organizers in VSSC are given in this brochure.

A Resource Booklet highlighting this year’s theme is posted inthe website “wsw.vssc.gov.in”. This will provide an overall informationon this year’s theme and will be useful to the students and teachers forconducting the activities at the school level. Please download it.

Getting Started

1. Form a WSW@Schools-2014 organizing committee under thechair of Principal or Head of the institution comprising of teachers,student representatives, parents and educational activists availablein the locality.

2. Select a WSW Coordinator Teacher for the overall coordinationof WSW@Schools-2014.

3. Plan WSW celebrations for one week during 4-10 October 2014.Give announcements and encourage students to participate. Ensuremaximum participation by the students.

4. Download the resource material posted in our website. Thiswill provide an overall idea about this year’s theme and will behelpful to the students and teachers alike.

5. Conduct the WSW Celebrations at your school. Start with aninaugural function on October 4th and end with a valedictoryceremony on October 10th. Invite eminent personalities of yourlocality to the functions (if possible, every day).

6. Ensure that all the events conducted as part of the WSW2014are based on this year’s theme: “Space: Guiding Your Way”.

7. You may organize as many events/competitions as possible.PTAs and general public also may be included in these activities. Useposters, banners and science rallies to publicize the WSWCelebrations.

8. Some of the events that you may conduct are: Essay writing,Fiction writing, Quiz competitions, Elocution, Debate, Painting,Poster making, Rocket & Satellite model making, Drama, Poetry,Collection of pictures related to the theme and their description,Lectures by students and teachers in each class or school, Lecturesby experts locally available, Rallies, Visiting nearby schools andencouraging them also to participate in the celebrations, Outreachprograms involving general public, Starting Science Clubs and SpaceClubs, Science Camps, CD shows, Creation of a hand-writtenmagazine, Collection of Space literature and creation of theme basedwall magazines, Science Exhibitions, Workshop for making simplescientific instruments like Telescope, etc. The list is never ending.We encourage you to add any other activities also, sticking to thisyear’s theme.

9. The School level WSW committee may select the winners forFirst, Second and Third places for each competition item for LP/UP/HS/HSS sections separately.10. Announce the prize winners at the school level competitionsand inform them that the Merit Certificates will be given to themshortly by VSSC through the school.11. Always plan these competitions as an opportunity to guidestudents to the new vistas of space science & technology andmotivate them.12. Innovative and informative activities are more effective and wellappreciated. Ultimately, an effort towards a Students Space Club(SSC) in your school should be accomplished.

Document the Activities

Document all your activities in written form with supporting photos intimeline. Ensure maximum involvement of students in thedocumentation. Follow the instruction given in the next section to makea final report and send it to VSSC for “Best WSW School Selection”.

Merit Certificates to the School-level Winners

Organizing committee of WSW-2014 at VSSC will distribute MeritCertificates every year for the winners of the school level WSWcompetitions. A separate sheet consolidating the number of certificatesto be given to the school-level winners should be included in the reportthat is send from the school to VSSC on WSW celebrations. Thesecertificates will be sent to the Heads of Institutions.

1.The Schools level WSW committee may select the winners for First,Second and Third places for each item for LP/UP/HS/HSS sectionsseparately.2.Three certificates (First, Second and Third places) per section percompetition item only will be issued. Ties should be resolved.3.Group items should be restricted to a maximum of five memberteams.4.There will not be certificates for non-competitive items. Howeversuch items are counted in the evaluation for selecting the Best School.5.Only required number of certificates with signature of the Chairman,Organizing Committee, WSW-2014 will be sent from VSSC. The Merit

Certificate will be valid only if the Head of the School also signs in itbefore distribution.

Best WSW School Selection

‘Best WSW School’ in each revenue district of Kerala will receive anaward. This selection is based on the evaluation of reports received atthe WSW-2014 office, VSSC from the Schools. The number of schoolscelebrating WSW and the competition for this title is increasing everyyear. The following general guidelines may be followed:

1. Use the WSW theme and its derivatives for all activities.2. Schools can conduct any number of events.3. Confirm the participation of all sections of students of your

school. (LP/UP/HS/HSS)4. Wherever possible, include the PTA and general public also as

part of the celebrations.5. For each activity/competition, note the date, number of

participants, details of winners, student’s involvement andoverall performance of the activity. Use these inputs for finalreport generation.

6. Photograph of the events, materials, interview with students,parents, teachers and local people can be written in a CD andsent along with the report. Make sure the CD will run inWindows-7.

7. Once you are ready with the above materials, prepare the finalreport for the Best WSW School evaluation.

Preparation of the Report

1. The cover page of the report must contain the following:a. Full name of the Schoolb. Complete address for communication (including PIN and

Revenue District)c. School Telephone numberd. Name and Mobile number of the Head of the School and the

WSW coordinator at Schoole. Name of the concerned AEO/DEO office and Revenue District

f. Total strength of the school and the participation for WSW(section wise)

g. Syllabus followed (State/CBSE/ICSE etc.)h. Category of School (Govt./Aided/Private)i. Signature of both WSW coordinator and Head of the Institution

with office seal.2. The report should have the following sections,

a. Preparations: This section summarizes the tasks undertaken likeformation of the organizing committee, selection of events and itsrelevance to the theme, planning and publicity.

b. Implementation: This section details the conduct of variousactivities, number of participants, involvement of parents, teachers,local experts, duration, arrangements etc.

c. Review and Evaluation: Methodology for evaluating competitiveitems, efforts taken to support the students to enhance theirperformance and a review of how the WSW celebrations were usefulto the students and teachers in the process of learning.

d. Suggestions and Conclusions.

e. The list of winners eligible for Merit Certificate should beattached separately at the end of the report.

f. Attach the duly filled summary sheet at the end of the report.

The final report tagged properly may be sent to the following addresswith a superscription “WSW at Schools – 2014”
