b Every day we get up at 7:00 and take a shower. Sometimes we play some games before breakfast at 8:00. We usually have juice and toast or croissants and fruit.

c After lunch we all do different activities—sports, drama, music, nature walks … I do drama and music, but sometimes I choose sports. This lasts until dinnertime at 6:00.

d After breakfast we all do the same thing. We make our beds and clean the tent. It’s boring, but usually we finish quickly and then we do our morning activities.

a Read the first two paragraphs of the article and answer the

questions.

What does EA mean? Why don’t the old race labels work any more?

b Read paragraph three.

What’s going to happen in the next decade?

c Read paragraph four.

Complete the definition. A “wigga” is

d Read paragraph five.

Is Beyoncé’s hair naturally blonde?

e Read paragraph six.

Do you agree with the conclusions? Is your generation EA? Are there many mixed race students in your school?

Do you know any wiggas?

Forget black, forget white. EA is what’s hot!

1 EA means “ethnically ambiguous” and describes a new generation.2 If you talk to many young people today, it soon becomes clear that they don’t think much aboutrace or color. Mario, a student from Miami, says: “Black and white people interact so much that wehave lost the distinction.” Rachel, a young nurse from Los Angeles, agrees. “Trying to define peopleby the old race labels doesn’t work any more. Look at the people around you. We are the newblended youth.”3 Mario and Rachel and millions like them are part of a new group called Generation EthnicallyAmbiguous (generation EA for short). It reflects the demographic reality of countries like the UnitedStates and Britain. In the last census, seven million Americans identified themselves as members ofmore than one race, or members of “no race.” In ten years, “mixed race” is going to become thebiggest ethnic minority group.4 White teenagers are adopting black lifestyles and culture in fashion, looks, music, sports andlanguage. Black urban culture has become everybody’s culture, says journalist Paul McKenzie. Itrepresents the triumph of the black community. In the past, a young white person who copied blackstyle was sometimes called a “wigga,” a negative term back then. Now wiggas are every place. Theextremely cool Justine Timberlake and Eminem are famous wiggas.5 EA is very hot now. Beyoncé, a black American, dyes her hair blonde, Cristina Aguileraaccentuates her Latin American roots with her black hair, and multiracial bands like the Sugarbabesare more popular every day.

6The barriers between black and white are disappearing. People don’t make a distinction nowbecause the distinction isn’t there—culturally and sometimes even physically!, concludes NickLeader. We are the new mix. We are the remix generation.

It means “ethnically ambiguous.”

no kissing.– have a lot of action but no blood.– have a happy ending.

Five hundred years ago…in Germany, in a town called Hamelin by the Weser River, there was an invasion of rats. There were rats of everykind: big rats, small rats, black and gray; they wereeverywhere. They fought the dogs, killed the cats, bit the babies and ate all the food they could find.

Terrified, the people of Hamelin went to see the Mayor. While they were in the Town Hall, a very strange manappeared. Tall and thin, with long blond hair and brightblue eyes, the man was wearing a tunic and a hat with afeather in it.

“I can make all the creatures living under the sun followme so you will never see them again. People call me thePied Piper!” he said, touching his pipe. He continued: “Iam only a poor piper, but my pipe has freed othercountries of plagues. If I can free your town of rats, willyou give me a thousand guilders?”

“Only a thousand? We’ll give you fifty thousand!”exclaimed the Mayor.

So, the Pied Piper walked into the streets and took out his pipe. With three high notes—peep, peep, peep!—hewoke up all the rats. Suddenly, there were hundreds ofrats in the streets following the Piper. Big and small, fatand tall, young and old, mothers and their families, all therats followed the Piper, dancing happily. He danced withthem, playing his pipe and guiding them into the WeserRiver—where they all danced in and drowned!

When the Piper asked for his fifty thousand guilders, theMayor told him that the town had no money. “What isdead cannot return,” laughed the Mayor. “We’ll give youjust fifty guilders. Good-bye!”

The angry Pied Piper walked into the streets and took outhis pipe. With three high notes—peep, peep, peep!—hewoke up all the children. Suddenly, there were hundredsof children in the streets, following the Piper. All thechildren of the town were there, dancing to the Piper’smusic. He danced with them, playing his pipe and guidingthem up a mountain and into a cave. The cave closed andthey disappeared—forever!

The people of Hamelin were devastated. They never sawtheir children again. If only they had kept their promise.

• The Humid Tropics Biome, the world’s largest

greenhouse, is home to rainforest plants:

bananas, rubber, cocoa, teak and mahogany.

The biomes are made of ETFE, a strong, recyclable material that is transparent to UV light and

not

degraded by sunlight.

The Eden Project helps us to understand and to celebrate the world we live in, and will inspir

3 Don’t forget fruit and vegetables!

Eat one fruit or vegetable with every meal. This reduces your

blood pressure, too.

4 Be like a camel!

Carry a bottle of water with you all the time so you can drink

water when you're studying, working, traveling or watching

TV. Drink water instead of coffee, juice or cola.

5 Eat less meat!

Eat a meal without meat at least once each week.

6 Eat more fish!

Tuna, sardines and salmon have acids that protect our hearts.

Eat them twice a week.

7 Always have breakfast!

Start the day with breakfast. It wakes up your body and helps

you to concentrate.

8 Don’t eat and watch!

Stop eating when you’re watching TV. It’s easy to eat a lot

without thinking – so don’t do it!

9 Calcium is cool!

Drink milk, enjoy yogurt and eat low-fat cheese. Calcium

builds strong bones and helps reduce blood pressure.

10 It’s in the bag!

Have a healthy sandwich for lunch one day a week —or

more. Use brown bread, low-fat meat, and salad. It’s cheap

and you will eat less fat, less salt and less sugar.

1 Match these pictures to the different parts of the story.

Aesop was a storyteller in Greece in the 7TH Century B.C. His stories—called fables—are all verysimple, but each one has a moral. Even today, two thousand years after he died, Aesop’s fables canteach us important lessons.

a _______ Once upon a time, there was a tortoise and a hare. As everyone knows, the tortoise is a very slow animal, one of the slowest. The hare, on the other hand, is one of the fastest.

b _______ But the hare was not only very fast. He was also very proud. He said to the tortoise,“You’re so slow. You take much longer to do everything. I’m much quicker than you!”

c _______ “And my legs and ears are longer,” continued the hare. “In fact, I’m much more handsomeand cleverer than you.”

d _______ In his very gentle, calm way, the tortoise said, “Well, it’s true your legs and ears are longer, but if we race, I can win.”

e _______ “You! Win?!” The hare laughed. He was very rude. He thought he was the best animal in the whole animal kingdom.

f _______ The hare ran so quickly he was soon far ahead of the tortoise, who was walking slowlybehind. So the hare stopped for a rest under a tree ... where he fell asleep!

g _______ Well, while the hare was sleeping—and he slept much longer than he thought—the slowand steady tortoise just kept walking, slowly but surely.

h _______ When the hare woke up and realized what had happened, he ran as fast as he could. But it was too late. The tortoise was already there at the finishing line, resting and calmly waiting for him.

Fish, birds, turtles and small animals likerabbits and hamsters are also favorites. The British are especially fond of pets. Half of all the households in England have a pet, usually a cat or bird. But what do people from other countries think about pets?
