Dr. Ales Obrez, Associate Professor, Restorative Dentistry, has been conferred the College’s 2015 Dr. Jon Daniel Teaching Award.

Dr. Obrez received the award from Dean Clark Stanford and two previous Daniel Award winners, Dr. Blasé Brown, Clinical Assistant Professor, Oral Medicine and Diagnostic Sciences, and Dr. Alison Doubleday, Assistant Professor, Oral Biology, at a recent faculty meeting.

The Daniel Award was established in 2010 in memory of longtime Oral Biology faculty member Dr. Jon Daniel, to honor instructors who have made exemplary contributions to UIC dental students’ learning. Dr. Daniel passed away in 2009.

Dr. Daniels’ qualities cited in the award are the ability to engage students’ interest, curiosity, the ability to motivate students, to challenge them, and to respond to their needs.

Dr. Obrez noted one of the ways he tries to go above and beyond his job description as an educator.

“I think it’s important that we as educators give students what they in some cases may not even be getting

from their families, such as advice on professional decisions that may impact their lives,” Dr. Obrez explained. “That’s what Dr. Daniel was very good at, namely giving the students advice on how to handle the

highs and lows of life and on what to do in the future,

using examples from his own life experiences.”

A highlight of being in education, Dr. Obrez noted, is “when your student, whom you guided and mentored, becomes successful.”

Dr. Obrez noted that he was honored to receive an award named for Dr. Daniel, whom Dr. Obrez knew, and also because it is a peer award. Faculty members and students nominate faculty for the award

The Daniel Award Selection Committee this year was composed of Drs. Brown and Doubleday; Dr. Priscilla Chang, Clinical Associate Professor, Restorative Dentistry, another previous Daniel Award recipient; and student Jihan Doss.

Dr. Lin Tao, Professor, Oral Biology, had nominated Dr. Obrez for the Daniel Award.

“I feel very honored that the approach of education I provide is validated as being similar to Dr. Daniel’s,” Dr. Obrez said.

“I am proud to be teaching in a dental school that has been home to some great educators whom I really admire,” Dr. Obrez added, citing Dr. Daniel; the late Dr. E. Lloyd Du Brul; Dr. Susan Herring; Dr. Robert Scapino; Dr. Sam Flores; and the late Dr. James Fuller. “They taught me and they guided me,” Dr. Obrez said.

Dr. Daniel’s wife, Jayne, as well as their daughter, Lauren Daniel, attended the presentation. Dr. Stanford presented them with a Golden Apple Award that the students had honored Dr. Daniel with in 1999. The award had been on display at the College since then.

“Jon was very connected to the students and their achievements and their struggles,” Jayne Daniel said. “He felt it was important for them to have a port in a storm, and that’s what the Daniel Award winner is about.

“The years Jon was here were some of the happiest of his life,” she concluded.

Academy of General Dentistry Honors Student Juveria Hussain’s E-Poster on Pulp Capping AgentsStudent Juveria Hussain received the first place award in the scientific e-poster category at the Academy of General Dentistry (AGD) Annual Meeting in San Francisco in June.

Her research was on Pulp Capping Agents. Her e-poster was electronically displayed on a high-

definition monitor at the conference. “It eliminates the need of printing and carrying the poster,” Hussain explained.

Hussain submitted her research abstract to the competition, which was open to students, residents, and recent graduates of U.S. and Canadian dental schools.

“My poster was among only 24 selected,” Hussain said. “It was an honor and a proud moment to represent the UIC College of Dentistry at the AGD Annual Meeting.”

Her research was an evidence-based literature review on the types of pulp capping agents used for direct and indirect pulp capping procedures. It critically appraised the clinical application and success of the different pulp capping agents, including agents created in recent years.

Hussain noted that her review “incorporated the highest level of clinical research done in the ten years from 2004 to 2014,” she said.

“The success of a pulp capping procedure is multi-factorial,” Hussain explained. “It depends on the type of pulp capping agent, patient age, type, site and size of exposure, and pulpal bleeding, to name a few factors. This research will help students and clinicians decide the pulp capping agent to use in clinical case scenarios based on the evidence of research and its interpretations.”

Her mentors are Dr. Ana Bedran-Russo, Associate Professor, and Dr. Adriana Semprum-Clavier, Clinical Associate Professor, Restorative Dentistry.

“I would like to thank Dean Clark Stanford, my mentors, and the research faculty for their support and encouragement,” Hussain said. “I am proud to be a UIC student.”

Hussain also represented UIC at the Academy for Sports Dentistry Annual Symposium in Chicago in June, where she presented a poster on Concussion Protection with Mouthguards. Her mentor was Dr. Larry Salzmann, Clinical Professor and Predoctoral Program Clinic Director, Pediatric Dentistry.

Hussain hopes to perform postgraduate work in clinical dentistry. “I aspire to make a meaningful impact on the clinical application of research in dentistry and health science,” she concluded.

Resident Dr. Reena Patel wins Punwani AwardThe second annual Dr. Indru C. Punwani Resident Research Awards were presented at the spring meeting of the Illinois Society of Pediatric Dentists (ISPD) recently at the American Dental Association (ADA) building in Chicago.

The 2015 award winners are Dr. Reena Patel, Pediatric

Dentistry Resident, UIC College of Dentistry, for her research, “Oral Health Beliefs and Behaviors of Indian Origin Parents,” and Dr. Kevin White, Ann and Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital, for his research, “Inhibition of Streptococcus mutans and sobrinus by Xylitol and Erythritol.”

AAE Honors Dr. Christopher Wenckus With Bender Lifetime Educator AwardDr. Christopher Wenckus, Associate Professor and former longtime Head of the Department of Endodontics, received the prestigious I. B. Bender Lifetime Educator Award from the American Association of Endodontists (AAE).

The I.B. Bender Lifetime Educator Award is given annually to acknowledge an AAE member whose contributions to endodontics in the field of education have demonstrated excellence through selfless commitment to full-time educational pursuits, and whose valuable contributions have instilled in his/her students the desire to pursue excellence in their careers.

Dr. Wenckus has “done an outstanding job in our profession for many years,” said Dr. Robert S. Roda, President of the AAE. He complimented Dr. Wenckus on

his “unwavering dedication and involvement in education and leadership.”

“I was deeply honored to get this award—the highest for an endodontic educator,” Dr. Wenckus said. “In my acceptance speech, I thanked my ‘two families’ for the opportunity to continue my career in education.

“My real-life family backed me all the way,” he continued. “None of my kids came home after college; all were gainfully employed. This enabled me to leave private

practice in 1999 and come full-time at the College as Department Head.

“My second family are my colleagues in the Department of Endodontics,” Dr. Wenckus explained. “I was very fortunate to have a dedicated, hard-working crew.” In his acceptance speech, he thanked both the full-time and part-time faculty by name. “All of these people made a difference in my role as Department Head and educator,” he said.

Dr. Wenckus also noted he owes much “to my mentor, Dr. Leonard Evanson, who was my teacher here at UIC and practice partner and who passed away way too young, and to Dr. Nijole Remeikis, who encouraged me to stay in education and eventually groomed me for the Department Head job.”

Dr. Remeikis is a former Bender Award recipient and was Dr. Wenckus’s predecessor as Department Head.

He thanked current Department Head Dr. Brad Johnson for nominating him for the award, and Dr. Wenckus noted that his “biggest backer” is his wife of 45 years, Elaine. “She was with me every step of the way,” he said.

The award provides national recognition for the College, Dr. Wenckus noted, and “is important as encouragement for others who might consider a career in dental education,” he said.

educators,” Dr. Wenckus concluded. “The old saying that academics is dignified poverty is way off base. It is rewarding in so many other ways.”

Dr. Luisa DiPietro Named University Scholar and honored by Wound Healing SocietyThe University of Illinois has selected Dr. Luisa DiPietro, Professor of Periodontics and Director of the Center for Wound Healing and Tissue Regeneration, as a University Scholar for 2015-2016.

In addition, Dr. DiPietro also was selected as the recipient of the Distinguished Service Award from the Wound Healing Society of Bethesda, MD.

“The University Scholars Program was created to honor and reward outstanding teachers and scholars,” said Dr. Timothy L. Killeen, President of the University.

Department of Periodontics Head Dr. Salvador Nares nominated Dr. DiPietro for the award.

She will receive $15,000 each of the next three years for travel, equipment, research assistants, scholarly materials, or other uses to support her University-related teaching or research.

“I’m thrilled to be recognized,” Dr. DiPietro said. “It’s surprising to me that I was chosen because there are so many wonderful scholars at the University—not only at UIC but at all the campuses. It’s a very nice feeling to receive the award, and the support of the College, from Dean Bruce Graham to Dean Clark Stanford, has been tremendous and crucial to my success.”

The funding can be carried over from one fiscal year to the next, “which is really great at this time when obtaining funding is so difficult,” Dr. DiPietro said.

She noted that she may use the funding to support some of her research. “I have a really interesting project I’ve been working on concerning the complexity of wound healing,” Dr. DiPietro explained.

“There are thousands of molecules produced in response to an injury but we know that the body doesn’t necessarily need most of them,” she added. “I’ve been working on creating a database that will allow a detailed analysis and understanding of the redundancy in the wound healing process.”

Dr. DiPietro noted that both the College and the

University constitute “a wonderful place for collaborations,” she said. “I have collaborators from the College, other colleges at UIC, and Urbana-Champaign. I’ve been able to really have meaningful engagement with other researchers, and that has pushed my research in a lot of new directions.”

She thanked Dr. Killeen, Dr. Stanford, Dr. Nares, the selection committee, and her laboratory team.

“I have a fantastic group of people who work in my lab,” Dr. DiPietro said. “There is Dr. Lin Chen, a Research Assistant Professor of Periodontics; Dr. Wendy Cerny, Research Assistant Professor and Coordinator for the Center for Wound Healing and Tissue Regeneration, and Director of the Office of Faculty Affairs; Yang Zhao, my Lab Manager; and Jian Zhou, a research technician. They are remarkable people that allow me to balance a very active research program with all my other duties.”

She also cited the contributions of her students, calling them “fantastic.” Dr. DiPietro works with DMD, DMD/PhD, MD/PhD, and PhD students. “These hardworking, brilliant young people make the real discoveries,” she said.

The Wound Healing Society’s Distinguished Service Award is given to an individual who has been recognized and nominated by their peers for outstanding contributions to the growth and development of the society.

Dr. DiPietro was honored at the society’s annual meeting in San Antonio, TX, April 30 and May 1. Dr. DiPietro has served the society as Program Chair for the Annual Meeting, Member of the Board of Directors, Chair of the Website Committee, Vice President, President Elect, President, and most recently as Chair of the Publications Committee.

“I was humbled and honored to receive the award,” Dr. DiPietro said. “I have benefited tremendously from being involved in the Wound Healing Society. Through my service in WHS, I have met many new colleagues, made many friends, and established new collaborations. I am grateful to the College for supporting both my scholarly and service activity, and for allowing me the time needed to serve the WHS.”

Dr. DiPietro also is UIC’s Associate Vice Chancellor for Research.

Dr. Emilia Taneva Earns Inaugural New Investigator Award from ADADr. Emilia Taneva, Clinical Assistant Professor, Department of Orthodontics, has been named the first recipient of the American Dental Association’s Council on Dental Practice’s Robert H. Ahlstrom New Investigator Award.

crucial role that dental informatics play in improving the quality of patient care, assuring patient health and safety, and increasing efficiency through the use of information technology.

Dr. Taneva was honored for her paper, “3D Evaluation of Palatal Rugae for Human Identification Using Digital Study Models.”

“My master’s thesis project involved developing and utilizing a 3D approach for human verification and identification using the palatal rugae pattern,” she explained. “I am currently working on a continuation of this research, which aims to evaluate the matching process in identical and fraternal twins, siblings, and parents, and to determine longitudinal changes in palatal rugae individual patterns.”

Dr. Taneva’s research “documented the palatal rugae as identifiers in a novel 3D manner comparable to that of the current ‘gold standard’ using fingerprints,” she said.

Dr. Taneva sees 3D digital study models obtained with intraoral or model scanners for diagnosis and treatment planning being “integrated in the personal electronic health record, which can be requested and accessed by forensic institutes and law enforcement,” she said.

“Implementation of the algorithms will bring a major impact to the biometrics and forensic odontology fields; will create new standards for interoperability and transmissibility, and for acquiring and transferring patient data in open source formats, which adds a significant value to the project,” Dr. Taneva added.

She feels that the award “is an acknowledgement of strong collaborative research,” Dr. Taneva said. “My work would not have been possible without my mentors.”

They are Dr. Carla Evans, Head, Department of Orthodontics; Dr. Andrew Johnson, Associate Professor of Computer Science; and Grace Viana, Statistician, Department of Orthodontics.

“The award is a testament to the UIC College of Dentistry commitment to excellence in education and research through innovative technologies,” Dr. Taneva concluded.

She will present her research at the ADA Annual Meeting in Washington, DC, in November.

Teams Participate in Oral Cancer Awareness 5KThe Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS) and College dental students put together teams that ran in the Oral Cancer Foundation’s annual Oral Cancer Awareness 5K Walk and Run on May 31 in Redmond Park in Bensenville, IL.

Dr. Antonia Kolokythas, Associate Professor, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, was on the organizing committee for the event for the Oral Cancer Foundation.

The OFMS team “participated in the event, then volunteered in the oral cancer screening that followed, and contributed to fundraising for ‘Team Mouthketeers,’ which consists of family and friends of Denise Leinhart—one of my oral cancer patients and a survivor,” Dr. Kolokythas said.

Participating were OMFS residents Drs. Ryan Colletta (with spouse Dr. Stephanie Colletta), Phil Ruckman III, Anastasia Haupt, Dustin Haupt, Matt McKnight, David Salomon, and William Moll (with spouse Dr. Alysha Moll), and OMFS attendings Dr. Antonia Kolokythas (with spouse George Soptiropoulos) and Dr. Tom Schlieve.

Dr. Dustin Haupt won the race for the second year. The College’s student team was formed in partnership

The goal of the program was to expose students to hands-on dental simulation lab work and lecture material. One student indicated that he “learned so much and this experience really deepened my passion for the field and motivated me to learn more about the various paths in the dental field.”

“This truly was a collaborative effort featuring the Urban Health Program dental students, Dante Brown (D-4), Jessica Williams (D-2), Daniel Rosales (D-3), and David Dominguez (D-3),” said Braulia Espinosa, Director of Admissions, who collaborated with Dr. Darryl Pendleton, Associate Dean for Student and Diversity Affairs, on the event. Robin Waner, Director of Central Sterilization, “ensured that we had all the dental supplies and equipment required for the program,” Espinosa said.

Dr. George J. Kottemann Passes Away; Established College’s Kottemann GalleryDr. George J. Kottemann, ’55, Orthodontics ’59, a distinguished and active alumnus of the UIC College of Dentistry and the University of Illinois, passed away at the age of 83 on June 10.

Dr. Kottemann and his wife, Norma, provided the funding that established the Kottemann Gallery of Dentistry at the College in 2000.

“Dr. George Kottemann was among the College of Dentistry’s most active, dedicated, and supportive alumni,” said Mark J. Valentino, Assistant Vice Chancellor for Advancement. “His leadership extended beyond the College throughout the University of Illinois system, the University of Illinois Alumni Association, and the University of Illinois Foundation.

“His legacy to the College will live on through his philanthropic support of the Kottemann Gallery of Dentistry, endowed scholarships, the transformation of our dental clinics, and the leadership he provided our Alumni Board of Directors for two decades,” Valentino added.

“We appreciate George and Norma’s generous financial contributions, but we also appreciate their generous contributions of time as well,” said Dean Clark Stanford. “We are grateful to them for opening their home for alumni receptions, and for coming to all of our events so long as their health permitted.”

Dr. Kottemann was the first UIC alumnus to serve as President of the University’s Alumni Association. He was the longest-serving Chair ever of the University of Illinois Foundation Presidents Council, serving from 2001 to 2013. Dr. Kottemann welcomed nearly 3,500 new Presidents Council members during his tenure.

A Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics, Dr. Kottemann presided for three years as Speaker of the House of Delegates of the American Association of Orthodontists.

Dr. Kottemann was the recipient of the 1996 University of Illinois Alumni Loyalty Award; the 1998 William E. Winter Award for Outstanding Advocate Leadership; the 2001 University of Illinois Alumni Association Distinguished Service Award; and the 2010 Distinguished Dental Alumnus Award. He also was one of the leaders of the effort to create the Leo and Wanda Sabien Class of 1955 Scholarship, one of the College’s first endowed scholarship funds.

Dr. Kottemann was a longtime member of the UIC Dental Alumni Association Board of Directors. “Whenever the Board needed wise counsel or a calm presence in a heated debate, George was the man we could count on,” said Dr. Robert Ficek, ’62, a longtime Board member and former President of the Board.

As a member of the Disaster Mortuary Operational Response Team, part of the National Disaster Medical System of the U.S. Public Health Service, Dr. Kottemann aided in the identification of victims of the September 11, 2001, World Trade Center attacks.

He had practiced Orthodontics in Peoria, IL, before retiring several years ago.

“Our condolences to Dr. Kottemann’s wife, Norma, and to his family,” Valentino said. “Dr. Kottemann will be missed, but forever remembered.”

“He was a great man and a loyal friend of the College,” Dean Stanford said.
