Our school is so fortunate to have such an
involved and supportive community. In part-
nership with the Woolgoolga and Northern
Beaches Chamber of Commerce, our
Careers Day has run for the past eight years.
Last Wednesday saw over 80 industry
professionals present 30 minute workshops. I
have included in this newsletter a copy of the
52 sessions which ranged from medical
professions, through to animation, speech
pathology, plumbing and carpentry to
mention a few. See the following page for a
complete list.
John Hannaford, a member of the Woolgool-
ga Chamber, once made aware of the signifi-
cant demand for an animator, met the costs
to fly a presenter from Sydney. Thank you
John.
The organising committee made up of Ray
Willing, Alistair Milroy, John Hannaford, Tony
Ross and Scott Bocking from the Chamber
along with Peter Burton and Megan Hart are
to be commended on their efforts. Our office
staff including Jo Riley, Tara Mielke, Trudy
Mackay and Lena Inness really helped pull
the day together to ensure its success. Thank
you.
The feedback from presenters was excep-
tional, with many commenting that it was “the
best” Careers Day so far. Students similarly
praised the day and their feedback was most
positive.
Prime News covered the event which was
broadcast on Wednesday night.
From the Principal’s Desk
In partnership with the Woolgoolga and Northern Beaches
Chamber of Commerce, our Careers Day has run for the past
eight years. Last Wednesday saw over 80 industry profession-
als present 30 minute workshops.
All students in Year 10 attended as did those
students in Years 11 and 12 who wished to have
a look at three careers they may not have had
the opportunity to visit when they were in Year
10. Thank you once again to the Woolgoolga
and Northern Beaches Chamber of Commerce
for your ongoing support.
As we move into the colder months, please send
your child to school in full school uniform. Our
uniform shop provides first rate quality uniforms
with logos embroidered on the jacket. There has
been a recent addition of very stylish tracksuit
pants for boys and girls made in the same style
as the successful quick dry shorts. A price list is
included in this newsletter. The shop operates
from the side of the school hall on Wednesdays
and Fridays from 8.30am-11.30am and through
your support, a percentage of the sales helps
provide uniforms for students in need. If you are
in need of assistance just give me a quick call.

I would like to farewell our first
cohort of Year 8 students who
after 13 weeks are moving onto
Food Technology. They have
been an outstanding group and I
would like to thank them for
showing such an interest in the
Agricultural activities at our
school farm.
The hot, dry weather throughout Term
1 has resulted in difficult growing
conditions for our vegetable gardens.
However, hand watering and lots of
mulch has helped to ensure that
everyone managed to grow some
wonderful vegetables which they have
sold to staff or taken home.
Happy farming.
Christine Duver,
Agricultural Teacher
News from the Agricultural Department
Lambing is now well under way with four lambs born so
far. More are expected in the coming three weeks.
Throughout Term 1 Year 8 students have been raising
layer chickens. They have monitored their growth and
development and spent considerable time learning
about stockmanship. These chickens are now all sold
and a new batch will arrive shortly for the next cohort of
students.
Students had fun harvesting the honey from our two hives,
spinning it from the frames and then sieving it, to obtain
honey of exceptional quality; receiving a credible second
place at this year’s honey competition at the Coffs Show.
We had an unwelcome visitor lately
who was stealing our eggs. Jason,
our farm manager, gave students a
chance to admire it, before relocat-
ing it well away from our chickens.

Woolgoolga High School has made a fantastic start to the 2018 debating season in both the Stage
4 and Stage 5 competitions.
This week the Year 7 and 8 debating team took part in a training day at Toormina High School.
The session was facilitated by the Sydney based Debating and Public Speaking Mentoring
Program, Masters Academy. This was the first time a metropolitan based company has travelled to
regional public schools for coaching and our students were enthusiastic participants in each of the
sessions. This training has left them confident and ready for the first round debate of the 2018
Premier's Debating Challenge at the end of the term.
Furthermore, our Year 10 Debating team faced off against Dorrigo High School in the first round
of the Year 9 and 10 Premier's Debating Challenge and came away with a resounding win. The
debate took place via video conference, on the controversial topic of whether or not teachers
should be allowed to search students' bags at school. Our team constructed a convincing model
and rebutted some challenging counter arguments from our opponents in order to secure the
win. Our second round debate will take place in Week 6 against Casino High School.

Opens
The boys travelled to Coffs to face off against
Toormina and South Grafton for a spot in the
next round of the University Shield. Sporting a
relatively young side, the boys came up
against the enormous Toormina side. Despite
a valiant effort and some good defence the
boys struggled to make inroads into the big
Toormina defence. Eventually going down 4
tries to 1. Blake Dennehy crossed for our only
4 pointer. Up next for the coveted second spot
was South Grafton. We were evenly matched
across the board and a much improved effort
saw the game come down to the wire. The
boys got within 2 points of the South Grafton
boys and a late try to them saw us go down
bravely. The boys deserve to be commended
on their effort and behaviour throughout the
day. Well done lads.
Under 14s
The boys were excited to hit the field in the
Under 14s Buckley Shield and faced off against
Orara High first up. In an end to end thriller the
boys were eventually toppled over by the much
bigger Orara team. Jake Hutchinson a noted
soccer player, had an absolute blinder, with
some barnstorming runs and some bone rattling
tackles. For a boy who is used to having the ball
at his feet, he proved he is handy with ball in
hand. Up next the boys faced off against what
appeared to be the South Grafton first grade
side. Some of these boys made Mr Newman
look small. From the get go the boys were under
the pump and struggled to keep the giants from
South Grafton out. The boys never gave in and
despite losing a whole bunch of players to
injuries, they kept turning up in defence and
trying hard. It was a very good day and the boys
all had fun. Thanks to Mr Newman for running
the boys and providing the drinks and shade for
the day. Good effort lads.
Rugby League
Congratulations to Emanuel Sutton of Year 10 who
represented the North Coast Combined High Schools
(CHS) Under 15 Rugby League team last week in Coffs
Harbour. Emanuel performed to such a high standard at
this tournament he has now been selected to attend the
prestigious NSW CHS Under 15 Rugby League trials
camp at Myuna Bay near Newcastle. Good luck
Emanuel at this four day camp in your quest for a NSW
CHS blues jersey.

Girls On Monday 14
th May, a group of 10 Wool-
googla High School students went to
Grafton to participate in the girls open touch
football gala day. In the first round the girls
came up against an evenly matched
Bellingen High School. The WHS team
fought hard and were able to come away
with the win to advance into the next round.
Round 2 was against the Toormina High
school, the reigning champions for the past
3 years. WHS went out and gave it every-
thing they had, surprising Toormina and
scoring 3 times. Unfortunately Toormina
had just a little extra left in the tank scoring
just before the end of the game to take the
win. WHS was then placed in the 3v4 play
off to receive their ranking for the competi-
tion, in this match they faced South Grafton
High School. Even though the girls were
disappointed about their previous loss, they
showed great determination to make sure
they came away with the 3rd
place rank and
defeated South Grafton convincingly.
Touch Football
Boys
After scrounging together a team in the
dying stages the boys all staggered in to
McKitrick Park, battered and bruised from
their weekend antics the boys ventured to
the outskirts of the oval to face off against
Bellingen High School. The boys played
outstanding, it was as if Bellingen didn’t
even show up. Fear had gotten the better of
them resulting in a trouncing at the hands of
the Woopi Boys. Bellingen actually failed to
appear, so we won through by default.
Through to the semi-finals, who would have
thought, the boys faced off against the
might of Toormina. In what proved to be a
see-sawing encounter, the boys eventually
got up 8-6 in a thriller.
Jacob Butterworth-Harvey the star with 4
tries, Noah Pilon and Ethan Duncombe
chimed in with two tries apiece. For a team
put together in 22 seconds they were prov-
ing that they were a force to be reckoned
with. Orara were the next victims of the
mighty Seahorses. From the get go Orara
were under the pump. And some nifty work
from Ethan got us up by 2 early, and from
there it was all over. The boys pressured
the hot favourites into submission, coming
away with a 5-2 win and the title. Next up in
the knockout is Nambucca and who knows
with a little practice the boys may get
stronger. Good effort lads.
Congratulations to all the girls who
played in the gala day but a special
mention to Jade Egar, Shania King and
Aheisha McPhillips who were selected
in the girls’ Mid North Coast open touch
football team.

Woolgoolga High School participated at two squash competitions
recently.
The Combined High Schools was held on Tuesday 8th May.
Charlise Sharp (Year 10) and Isabel Hallam (Year 12) competed
in the girls division. Although it was their first attempt at a squash
competition both girls played very well. Samuel Moriz (Year 7),
Ethan Pursch (Year 8) and Lachlan Rook (Year 9) participated in
the boys’ event. They triumphed over South Grafton in the semi-
finals but were narrowly defeated by Coffs Harbour in the finals.
In the Coffs Harbour Schools Secondary Squash Challenge,
Woolgoolga High School entered two U15 teams. Both
teams dominated through the round robin stages to meet each
other in the finals. Lachlan Rook, Damon-Leigh Striegher, Jacob
Roberts and Phoenix Versfeld played Samuel Moriz, Ethan
Pursch, Callum Roworth and Luke Taylor. The teams were very
evenly matched with the overall result going down to the last
point of the final match! Congratulations to Lachlan Rook,
Damon-Leigh Striegher, Jacob Roberts and Phoenix Versfeld for
winning for Woolgoolga High School the U15 division of the
Coffs Harbour Schools Secondary Squash Challenge for
the second year in a row. The competition even made The
Advocate newspaper on Saturday 19th May!

Congratulations to all Woopi High students who participated in this year’s Athletics carnival. The
weather was fantastic with sunny skies. Wonderful enthusiasm and sportsmanship was displayed
by all competitors.
A big shout out to Mrs Hall, the Art staff and all the Art students who made the incredible mascots

On 14th May, Year 10, 11 and 12 students were shown two videos to increase their awareness of food
allergies. Year 7 – 9 will also see the presentation next Monday 28th May. The statistics about children with
allergies are alarming. One in ten children born today have food allergies and this figure is increasing rapidly!
Whilst treatments are improving, a reliable cure has not been found. The best defense is still prevention of
exposure to allergens. We all have a responsibility to keep each other safe, and to ensure all students with
any form of disability feel included in day-to-day activities.
If you have a friend with an epipen, ask them to show you how to use it, and to explain the types of
symptoms they may show when having a life threatening reaction.
Think about how your actions impact others – teasing or taunting someone with foods they are allergic to is
not acceptable.
If you have a friend with food allergies, think about how they can be included safely in celebrations.
Be Aware and Show you Care!

A certain level of anxiety is normal, but excessive levels of anxiety can reduce our ability to focus, affect our confidence and undermine our health. It
can also leave us tired and reduce our ability to function in life.
