Better Schools Tasmania is designed to reach the level of public funding for schools that will minimise educational disadvantage and facilitate a high quality education for every student in every school in Tasmania. By 2019 funding for the Tasmanian Education System will increase by $382 million. The additional funding will be phased in over a six year transition period from 2014-2019 and full benefits will not be seen immediately. This means that all Tasmanian schools will see a significant boost to their funding over time. Better Schools includes a National Plan for School Improvement which outlines five nationally agreed reform directions:

• Quality teaching

• Quality learning

• Empowered school leadership

• Meeting student need

• Transparency and accountability Every school will need to develop a plan for becoming a better school, reflecting on these five areas. Tasmania will use its Fairer Funding Model in Tasmanian Government schools to distribute the Better Schools funding. Fairer Funding aims to ensure that young Tasmanians from all backgrounds receive an education that is equitable, of high quality and maximises their potential in life. This model features a core allocation to all schools that is supplemented where there is disadvantage or need:

• Students from low socio-economic backgrounds

• Students with disabilities

• Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students

• Students who need help with English

• Schools that are disadvantaged by their size or remoteness. If you have any questions about Better Schools Tasmania please talk to me or visit www.education.tas.gov.au Kind Regards Hamish Cunningham Woodbridge School, Principal Book Fair News Thank you very much to all the families who purchased books from our Book Fair. We were able to purchase a total of $459 worth of books for our library and we are very grateful for the support you have given us. Thank you also to Jess Woolley who helped out on sales day. Two lucky students who purchased books were drawn to win another book prize – congratulations to Clara and Lily who are pictured trying to choose their prizes! We will be holding another fair in December and this will be a great opportunity for families to purchase Christmas presents at very reasonable prices.

Sea Stars Dads’ Night On Thursday August 15th we held our Term 3 dads’ Night. Unfortunately Kate Beedie was unwell and couldn’t join us for the evening but a great time was had by all, even though we missed her! Children and their dads joined together in songs, games, box-work and making pizzas. During Speech Pathology Week, speech pathologist want to encourage people to think about what life is like for the large number of Australians living with a communication problem, as well as how life would change if they were to have a communication difficulty themselves. It’s estimated that one in five people will experience communication difficulties at some point in their lives. This can range from mild to very severe and can impact on the way they participate in family life, the community, education and the workplace. Speech Pathology Australia reports that 20% of children starting school have trouble understanding or using language. For more information on communication difficulties, visit www.speechpathologyaustralia.org.au or talk to your school’s speech pathologist. Winter Ball Report

The Winter Ball was held last Friday afternoon. This year it was held in the Performing Arts Building. This proved to be a much warmer option than the hall. Everybody had a great time and the students’ costumes and dance moves were fantastic! Thank you to the SRC, JRC, extra student volunteers, teachers, teachers’ aides and parents whose assistance ensured the success of the Ball.

This model features a core allocation to all schools that is supplemented where there is disadvantage or need:

• Students from low socio-economic backgrounds

As such if you know that your child will not be enrolled at our school for 2014 could you please notify the office in person or by phone on 62674667 Your support in this matter would be greatly appreciated. Now is also the time for parents of kinder age students to enrol their child. As a school we will be offering a number of pre-kinder sessions from now until the end of the year. Please feel free to ring the school office if you would like an opportunity to view and discuss what our wonderful school can do for your child’s learning needs. Last Friday, we held our 2013 school Winter Ball with the theme being “Across the Universe”. It was great to see so many students, parents and teachers turn out for this event. The costumes that students deigned and wore on the evening looked amazing. It was an evening full of fun for all those who attended. I would like to thank all the secondary students who helped in the organisation and setup of this event. You all did a fantastic job. I would also like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the teachers who attended this evening and made it such a success. Particular mention needs to be made of Jan Moore and Caroline Randall for their hard work and dedication leading up to this event. Well done to all. Invite to all 5/6 parents - Next Thursday 5th September from 5:00 to 6:30pm Woodbridge School will be hosting a secondary information evening for any interested parents of Grade 5 and 6 students. Please RSVP to the school office on 62674667. Betters Schools Tasmania – fairer funding for all students The way Tasmanian schools are being funded is changing. In 2010 the Australian Government commissioned an independent Review of Funding for Schooling, led by Australian businessman David Gonski, known as the Gonski Review. The Gonski Review found that existing school funding arrangements were too complicated and were not meeting the education needs of all Australian children. The Review concluded that many schools, particularly those with larger populations of disadvantaged students, were missing out on much needed resources. The Tasmanian and Australian Governments reached an agreement on 9 July 2013 to deliver Better Schools Tasmania. Better Schools Tasmania addresses the issues identified by the Gonski Review.

Times and dates of these sessions will be provided to parents in the coming weeks. Throughout the year I have shown a number of families around our school facilities and educational programs. This evening is designed to give you the opportunity to explore our facilities and meet our secondary teachers. We will finish the night down at the Marine Discovery Centre. The West Winds community bus and our school bus will be made available on the night to transport guests to and from the centre. I look forward to seeing as many of our Grade 5 and 6 parents at this evening as possible. I urge all parents to come along and find out more about what secondary life is like at Woodbridge School.

On Friday 9th August Grade 9 and 10 students participated in the “Core of Life” workshop which is an education program about pregnancy, birth and the early weeks of becoming a parent. This program was facilitated by Ann Sweeny (Youth Health Nurse from Pulse), Louise Parsons (Midwife) and Angela Spooner (school social worker).
