INTRODUCTION Economic development in India is highly dependent upon various sectors like, agriculture, manufacturing and services (specially in the software market). According to IMF’s monetary index survey, India ranks fourth among nations, in its GDP. Although two thirds of the Indian workforce still earn their livelihood directly or indirectly through agriculture, services are a growing sector and play an increasingly important role in India’s economy. India is a major exporter of highly skilled workers in software and financial services, and software engineering. Other sectors like manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, nanotechnology, telecommunication, shipbuilding, aviation and tourism are also showing strong potentials with high growth rates. The economy of India measured in US$ exchange – rate terms, is the twelth largest in the world, with a GDP in excess of $1 trillion (2008). It recorded a GDP growth rate of 9.0 % for the fiscal year 2007-08 which makes it the second fastest emerging economy, after china in the world. At this rate of sustained growth many economists forecast that India would, over the coming decades, have a more pronounced economic effect on the world stage. Despite this phenomenal rate of growth, India’s large population has a per capita income of $4,542, measured by PPP, and $ 1,089, measured in Nominal terms (revised 2007 estimate) . Yet,The World Bank classifies India as a low income economy.

Mass media:-

Mass Media is a medium intended for a large audience. It may take the form of broadcast media, as in the case of television and radio, or print media, like newspapers and magazines. Internet media can also attain mass media status, and many mass media outlets maintain a web presence to take advantage of the ready availability of Internet in many regions of the world. Some people also refer to the mass media as the referencing the fact that it tends to stick to prominent stories which will be of interest to a general audience, sometimes ignoring controversial and breaking news. Many people around the world rely on mass media for news and entertainment. Globally, mass media is a huge industry.

The press in any democratic country plays a vital role in creating, in molding and reflecting the public opinion and shaping the political, social and economic development of the country. Through the media, knowledge and skills could be imparted and change could be achieved.

The main role of the media is to inform the society today is an old Concept.

The role of media, both print and electronic is to inform as well as motivate the society on its paths of development. This role of the media is therefore an important aspect in developing countries.
