    QualityAssuranceinTheologicalEducation:EcumenicalandMulti-Contextual

    Inquiries.The38participantsenjoyedmeetingforthefirsttimeontheAfrican

    continentandbecomingawareofthestrategicimportanceofAfricanassociations

    oftheologicalschoolsandtheworkofAACCandotherecumenicalbodiesin

    enhancingtheologicaleducationinAfrica.

    2. TheConsultationwasanhistoricevent,sinceforthefirsttimeProtestant,RomanCatholic,Orthodox,Evangelical,Pentecostal,andAfricanIndependentChurches

    associationscametogethertoaddressissuesofqualityassuranceandenhancement

    intheologicaleducationonthegloballevel.

    3. InthecourseoftheConsultation,participantsbecameawarethatqualityassuranceandenhancementtakeplaceinavarietyofdifferentways.Insomecontexts,the

    workofqualityassuranceandenhancementisdonebydifferentorganizations,

    includingstate-relatedaccreditationagencies,universities,independentsecular

    accreditationagencies,andchurch-relateduni-denominationalormulti-

    denominationalaccreditationagencies.Italsobecameclearthatthereisnoglobal

    agencytoaccreditinstitutionsoftheologicaleducation.Participantsalso

    recognizedtheneedtodevelopacommonunderstandingbetweenallChristian

    institutionsoftheologicaleducationonwhatconstitutesqualityassuranceand

    enhancementintheologicaleducation.

    4. Participantsrealizedthatqualityassuranceandenhancementintheologicaleducationisamultidimensionalprocessthatinvolvesseveralinterrelated

    parameters,includingcurriculumintheologicaleducation,institutionalresources

    fortheologicaleducation,studentcompetenciesandskills,contextualization,and

    outcomesoftheologicaleducationamongothers.Abalancedconceptofqualityin

    theologicaleducationshouldincludeacademicproficiency,spiritualformation,andpastoralcompetencies.

    5. Participantsaffirmedthatqualitytheologicaleducationshouldaddressmultipleformsofoppressionanddiscriminationbasedongender,race,ethnicity,color,

    class,caste,ability,sexuality,andreligion.Participantsalsoaffirmedthatquality

    theologicaleducationshouldcontributetopromotingjustice,peace,equality,and

    ecologicalintegrityinchurchandsociety.

    6. ParticipantsaffirmedthatWOCATIisanessentialplatformfornetworkingamongassociationsandinstitutionsfortheologicaleducationintheworldaccordingtothe

    WOCATIconstitutionalmandates.

    7. Participantsacknowledgedtheneedforacharterwithguidelinesontheessentialelementsofqualityintheologicaleducation.

    8. ParticipantsexpressedappreciationtoETE-WCCforitsongoingsupport,andaffirmedtheExecutiveCommitteesrecommendationtoaskWCCthroughthe

    AssemblyPlanningCommitteethataspacebecreatedtorepresentWOCATIinthe

    nextWCCAssemblyandthefutureworkingstructuresofWCC.
