MATERIALS
Before gathering materials for your monster shape art
activity decide how you will use the creations. Will you
be hanging them on display, adding them to a class
book, using them as puppets? If you’re making a class
book you’ll want to use materials that are flat so that
your book will go together easily. If you’re creating
puppets or a display then you can include items that
give a more 3D look to your students’ creations.

DIRECTIONS
Shape Set with Title and Borders
This set works well if you are going to make a class
book, if you have toddlers who are not yet cutting, or
if you want to display students’ work with their names
visible.
We recommend giving kids a choice of monsters, so
you’ll want to print out multiple copies of each shape
for kids to choose from. Along with the shapes set out
any materials kids may use for decorating their
monsters. Don’t forget to include glue and/or tape.
If you’d like you can break up the activity and let kids
color at one center or on one day and then follow up
with decorating materials at a different time.
Introduce the activity by talking about features kids
could add to their own monsters (eyes, feet, arms,
horns, mouths, etc). Encourage them to be creative.
DIRECTIONS
Simple Shape Set
This set works well if you have kids who are able to cut
and you want to make puppets or a bulletin board
display.
We find it best for kids to color or paint the shapes and
then cut them out. Then we use materials to decorate
them.
Tip
Whichever set you choose to use be sure to leave
these out as a free choice and give kids the
opportunity to make more than one monster. We find
that creativity increases as kids have time to try
different designs and make different features with the
same materials.
Extension ACTIVITIES
Making these Shape Monsters is just the beginning. Incorporate additional learning goals by using the students’ creations in some of these fun ways.
Math Ideas
Shape Monster Sorting-Place large sorting circles (hula
hoops, yarn, or something similar) on the floor. Add
one of the shape sorting cards to each circle. Have
kids sit in a circle around the area with their monsters.
Then have them add their monsters to the correct
circle. Discuss the characteristics of each shape.
Count how many monsters are in each set. Compare
the amounts.
Shape Monster Graphing-Place the shape sorting
cards in a straight line along the left or bottom side of
a large open space on the carpet. Great a real graph
with the shape monsters. Discuss the data.
Shape Monster I Spy-Place all Shape Monsters in an
open space on the floor or hang them on a display
board. Play I Spy by having kids give clues to help
friends guess the monster they are looking at.
Encourage them to use describing words by telling the
color, shape, number of legs/ears/eyes, etc.
Extension ACTIVITIES
Literacy Ideas
Shape Monster Alliteration-Work together to come up
with monster names based on the beginning sound of
a monster’s shape (Rudy Rectangle, Telly Triangle,
etc). Encourage kids to be silly with it!
Modeled Monster Whole Group Writing-Create a
giant shape monster on chart paper and display next
to your shared writing area. Using the monster as a
prompt guide the class in creating a shared story
about your monster.
Modeled Monster Small Group Writing-Extend the
previous activity by having 3-4 kids bring their Shape
Monsters to small group literacy time. Use those
monsters as the characters in a shared small group
story. Allow kids to practice acting out their stories and
then have a class show. Combine all stories into a
class book.
Monster Puppets-Add craft sticks to the cut out
monsters and make puppets. Add them to the
dramatic play area for kids to use. (This is a great way
to use extra puppets made by kids during free choice
time.

Additional Uses
Shape Monster Display Board-Hang one monster
made by each child on a class bulletin board. This is
an easy way to refer back to them for learning and
discussing shapes over and over again.
Shape Monster Class Book-Combine the students’
shape monsters into a class book. Use the printable
book cover provided in this set. If you’d like, have
each child dictate a sentence about their monster
and include it in the book next to their shape monster
page. Read the book aloud to the class. Then add it
to the library center for kids to enjoy over and over
again.
