Topic
This week our theme has been Puppets.
Over the week we have looked at many
different types of puppets and looked at
how we use them. We looked
at stick puppets, finger puppets, hand
puppets, string puppets to name just a
few. We used puppets to retell our
stories and past events. We also used
our hands to make shadows onto the Interactive
white board by making shapes in the light.
Our theme of puppets was made complete with
our trip to the puppet workshop at
Sitara. The children had a wonderful
time and made their own amazing
glove puppets.
We also got to draw fantastic pictures
of the Gruffalo!
Numeracy This week we have been comparing
groups of objects and determining if
they contain the same amount. We
played a game where we looked at
the amounts in two groups and shook
our hands towards the highest number
or above our heads if it was the same.
We used our large floor dominoes to
compare the amount of
dots on each side. We
then matched those
which had the same
amount of dots.
We also played a game of Alligator
Numbers on the
Interactive white
board where we
compared written
numbers and
groups and
directed the
alligator’s face towards the biggest
number. Making our learning fun!

Literacy Our focused book this week has
been The Gruffalo. When sharing our
story, we were able to investigate its
structure by looking at what
happened at the beginning, in the
middle and at the end. Lots of
eager and meaningful discussion!
We also made and used stick puppets to recall the
story and then we made masks
which we used to act out the
story when in the garden, what
fun!
In Phonics this week we recapped all the letter
sounds learned so far and thought of lots of words
that begin with these sounds.

Literacy Activity:
This week we have been using stick puppets to recall and investigate the
structure of stories.
The literacy activity this week is to make some stick puppets and use them in
retelling a story.
Talk to your child about their favourite fairy tale or story. Can they tell who are the characters are
and what they do?
Talk about the structure of the story:
What happens at the beginning, how did the story start?.
What happens in the middle, what are the characters doing?.
What happens at the end, how did the story finish?
With your child make some stick puppets of the characters from this story. (Directions below)
Together retell the story and pay attention to the story structure. Send the finished stick puppets
into class. (Write any comments on the back of this sheet)
Talk Homework:
Look at the picture you received for ‘Talk Homework’ for the “Let’s Pretend” Topic.
Questions to ask your child:
Do you think the picture is of a birthday party. Why do you think this?
Who’s birthday party do you think it is? How do you know?
How many children are at the party?
How many children are wearing a costume? How many are not wearing a costume?
Compare the two groups of children - those in costume and those not in costume.
Are there the same amount of children in each group? How do you know?
(Please write your child’s responses on the reverse of this page).
What did your child enjoy?
What does your child need more practice doing?
Remember: You should be guided by the pace at which your child wants to go.
If interest is being lost, leave the activities for a while and then come back to them later.
Do remember to give lots of praise and encouragement.
Draw the main
characters and
colour them in
Carefully cut
them out
Attach a stick or
a pencil on the
back using tape
