Commodities crash weighs on dairy industry

Bellshill plays host to Prime Minister

It’s no secret that life in the dairy industry is tough at the moment.

Every company including Wiseman has been dealing with challenging retail market conditions, whilst also managing high costs for essentials like fuel and plastics.

More recently, a new factor has emerged. The value of bulk cream has halved in the past six month period due to strong supply and weak demand for the product.

The result of higher costs and lower bulk cream returns is that a UK industry which is already under pressure has seen a further £125m wiped from its income in the past six months.

Wiseman is not immune to this slump in the value of commodity bulk cream. But the company is acting to address the impact of these higher costs and loss of value from this important market.

We have moved to reduce the farm-gate milk price we offer farmers, to more accurately reflect the loss in value of the cream in each litre we buy.

Bellshill dairy played host to Prime Minister David Cameron – and he left with a clear sense of why Wiseman people are known as Britain’s fresh milk professionals.

The visit, kept tightly under wraps for security reasons until the very last moment, was the centre-piece of a trip to Scotland in advance of local elections.

The Prime Minister was accompanied by Scottish Conservative party leader Ruth Davidson MSP and local MSP Margaret Mitchell.

We continue to negotiate with our customers to recover higher selling prices for the products we make.

And we continue to look at how we can process, pack and distribute our products more efficiently.

When recovery comes, strong companies with committed workforces will emerge even stronger.

With the exceptional staff we have in every part of the Wiseman network, well invested dairies and depots and the support of our new owners Müller, that will certainly be the case for Wiseman.

After a private meeting with Billy Keane and Martyn Mulcahy, he spent time in the Bellshill control room, where he was shown how milk moves through the dairy from milk intake to finished product.

Mr Cameron had made a specific request in advance to spend time with staff and Project Eden students.

And Steven Rush and Navpreet Sidhu had a cup of tea with the Prime Minister (pictured on the front cover), who asked about their roles, the Eden Project, and their aspirations for the future.

Great credit is due to everyone at Bellshill. The dairy and vehicles looked fantastic and were a credit to the company.

ice cream to babyfood in Austria and Slovenia. He joined Müller at the start of the year.

A lifelong Ajax fan, Ronald (age 42) and his family (wife Rima and 3 sons) are adjusting quickly to life in England playing football, golf and tennis together.

However this summer he is quite clear he will be cheering on the Dutch at Euro 2012 and not England or Germany!

Billy Keane will continue to lead the Wiseman milk business as Managing Director and will report directly to Ronald.

Ronald will also continue to directly lead the Müller Chilled Yogurt and Dessert business.

Martyn Mulcahy, currently Group Operations Director at Wiseman, will take on a newly created role as Operations Director UK Group. In this role Martyn will be responsible for all aspects of Operations, Engineering, Supply Chain Planning, Procurement and Quality within the UK.

Martyn will report directly to Ronald and Billy, as MD´s for Müller Dairy and Wiseman respectively, and to Ronald for his wider UK role responsibilities.

The white stuff has gone black and white with millions of special edition Wiseman school milk cartons now featuring giant pandas.

The new look cartons are promoting a unique partnership with the Royal Zoological Society Scotland (RZSS) to mark the residence at Edinburgh Zoo of two giant pandas, Tian Tian and Yang Guang.

The partnership will provide primary and nursery school children throughout the UK with the chance to learn more about pandas with fun pandas facts on the cartons and a range of online and print materials for class projects.

The panda partnership also sees a new look Wiseman truck hitting the road complete with visuals of Tian Tian and Yang Guang, so keep your eyes peeled for that around the Wiseman network!

Bridgwater is in blue heaven following a PIU audit with Tesco.

That’s because the site has become the first fresh milk dairy in Britain to achieve ‘Blue’ status assessed against the latest version of Tesco’s standards.

This caps an excellent series of audits across Wiseman’s network of dairies, with all other dairies not only achieving ‘Green’ status, but showing year on year improvements in the number of non compliances at each site.

Annual PIU (Product Integrity Unit) inspections involve a team of auditors arriving unannounced at the site. They comb every area to assess everything from cleanliness to the knowledge of the staff measured against over 400 requirements.

‘Blue’ status is awarded to sites which have four or less minor issues. ‘Green’ status is given to sites with up to fourteen non compliances.

Tesco Group Technical & Trading Law Director Liz Kynoch was quick to congratulate the Company and Martyn Mulcahy, Group Operations Director said:

“The team at Bridgwater should be very proud of this achievement, which puts the seal on a strong series of audits across all of our production sites.”

“Great credit is due to everyone who played, and continues to play a part.”

Pete Twiss, site manager at Bridgwater said:“ Tesco has 300 suppliers to its dairy category alone and Bridgwater is only the 3rd site in the dairy sector to achieve the ‘blue’ standard.”

Emma Rooney, quality manager at Bridgwater commented:“ The audit is incredibly tough but everyone pulled together and we are all delighted to have created a little bit of history at Bridgwater.”

Wiseman Welly Walks have raised tens of thousands of pounds for the hospice movement all over the UK and we are delighted to have reached a grand total of £100k from our first five walks in Carlisle (twice), Market Drayton, Glasgow & Northampton.

The plan is to continue organising Welly Walks up and down the country over the coming months and helping to raise much needed funds for our local hospices.

100,000 reasons to get your wellies on!

Keep an eye on Wisenet and the Welly Walk pages on Facebook and Twitter where we will be revealing our next walk locations very soon!

Glasgow The Glasgow walk in aid of the Prince & Princess of Wales Hospice hosted record breaking numbers with a massive 700 participants. It was fantastic to see the creativity that had gone into the variety of outfits, including a family of highland cows and three ‘Wise Men’ milk cartons! Some hard work has clearly gone into the fundraising too, with the current total sitting at around £30,000 with more to come!

Northampton The people of Northamptonshire also gave it some ‘welly’ by taking part in the area’s first ever Wiseman Welly Walk to raise money for the Cynthia Spencer Hospice. 500 people arrived on a beautiful sunny morning to take part and raised a record breaking £40,000.

Bristol Our next walk is in Bristol on Sunday 16th September in aid of St Anne’s Hospice. It’s set to be a great day out and the route will take walkers across the Severn Bridge into Wales and back again!

Carlisle Most recently our second Carlisle Welly Walk took place and raised over £5,000 for the Eden Valley Hospice!

Social Networking and Media PolicyAn increasing number of us are getting online to Follow on Facebook, Tweet on Twitter and Tag on Tumblr and it’s for this reason the company is introducing a new social networking and media policy.

Briefing sessions will be taking place at all sites, and details of the policy will be sent electronically to all users of company IT systems.

The purpose of the policy, and the briefing sessions, is to ensure all employees are comfortable and confident in using social media, or posting information online in a way that does not affect the Company, our employees, or our customers, suppliers or competitors. We don’t want to stop anyone enjoying keeping in touch and sharing everything from photos to opinions on sites like Facebook.

Importantly this policy does not just cover those with access to Company computer systems or communications facilities, or activity during working

hours, but also online activity outside of working hours, on non Company IT or communications systems such as your home computer or mobile phone.

As a general principle, before posting anything online, think, would I say this out loud in the workplace?

Further guidance and information is contained within the policy and will be explained at the briefing sessions.

You can also find out more information on this policy from Company noticeboards, Wisenet or from your manager.

If you have any further questions, please contact your line manager or local personnel adviser.

Wiseman has signed a deal to supply fresh milk direct from the UK to the people of India.

Following successful trials with an Indian distributor, we are now shipping around our extended shelf life milk, Puriti, to India every week.

The milk is primarily aimed at the ex-patriot community and is being distributed initially around Foreign Embassys, Banks and other international businesses as well as hotels and restaurants around New Dehli.

The deal also represents a major opportunity to access a vast new market in the second most populous country in the world where consumption

of dairy products is exploding and sales of liquid dairy products (milk, drinkable yoghurt, etc) are expected to grow to around 60 billion litres per annum by 2013.

Sandy Wilkie, Sales & Marketing Director at Wiseman said:“ This deal is a great opportunity to take fantastic fresh British milk to an enormous new market and we have high hopes it could be the start of something big for our extended shelf life brand, Puriti.”

Angela planning ultimate glory

Kayleigh’s a Dairy Pioneer!

As a forecast and demand planner, Angela Caulfield spends her days trying to predict the demand for milk from our customers but come the evening and weekend she certainly doesn’t put her feet up for a rest.

Instead Angela is in training for a major competition this summer which could see her and her team-mates crowned world champions… in frisbee.

This is no ordinary frisbee, this is ultimate frisbee – think less walk in the park with the dog and more a combination of netball, basketball and American football. It’s fast, it’s furious and it’s seriously competitive.

Angela has been playing ultimate frisbee for around 5 years, which is basically a 7-a-side game, played on a field about the size of a football park where teams score by throwing the frisbee to a team-mate when they are in the end zone.

Angela (pictured above with her team-mates), explains:“ I was introduced to ultimate frisbee by my boyfriend who has been playing for over 10 years now and really enjoyed the fitness element and the team spirit from day one.”

“ I have been lucky enough to represent my club and country in various competitions around the world but this summer will be my biggest achievement and biggest challenge. The sport is growing rapidly across the globe so we’ll have stiff competition from the teams from the US, Canada, Finland, Germany and the hosts Japan but we know we have a good chance so fingers crossed we can return as world champions.”

From ‘Jack of all trades’ to ‘Dairy Pioneer’.

That’s the journey Kayleigh Brock has been on in her seven years with Wiseman.

Now she’s celebrating landing a new management role at Bridgwater, following completion of her Project Eden ‘Degree in Dairy’ after three years.

Kayleigh explains:“ On a small site like Okehampton we all pulled together and mucked in wherever help was needed so I got an insight into just about everything that happened in the dairy and depot at one time or another.

“ The opportunity to sign up for Project Eden and gain a ‘degree in dairy’ came along and was too good to miss. I was lucky enough to be selected and have enjoyed every minute of it.”

Kayleigh and her pioneering colleagues who formed the first ever Project Eden group have now completed the final term of their studies and can look forward to graduating later this year. For Kayleigh, she has extra special reason to look forward to graduating as she has become the first student to earn a new job thanks to her studies.

Kayleigh added:“ I was recently appointed the Quality Support Manager at Bridgwater Dairy. My studies have given me insight into the entire dairy supply chain but quality has been the area that interested me most and I can’t wait to get started and put what I have learned into practice.”

Hollywood hardman Vinnie Jones has been unveiled as the latest celebrity to front the ‘Make Mine Milk’ campaign.

The ex-international footballer, now just as famous for his no-nonsense appearances on the big screen, will be seen under the headline ‘You know what’s good for you’.

With funding for the campaign set to come to an end in October 2012 and only one further burst of advertising planned for September, Jones could well be the penultimate star to sport the now-famous milk moustache.
