TM

Well my friends, as the song says, the time has come, to raise the roof, have some fun, throw away the work to be done, and join us in Florida! I can

hardly believe it’s been two years since I became President of the association. We’ve done so much as an organization and the future holds great things to come. As I look back on the challenges and the opportunities to grow personally as well as the growth of the organization, I am proud. In my years in IBDEA, I’ve seen it grow from a group of friends to an international group reaching out to help all.

In the past couple of years we’ve seen the publication of our first Sanitation Guidelines. This is the first of what I see will be many to come. On the education front, we’ve grown from a basics school to an all-around introduction to the beverage industry. We now have a sustainable advanced school, with other training opportunities in the future. We’ve partnered with ISBT, the International Society of Beverage Technologists, and have had opportunities to expand our reach into the industry. It’s the direction and passion that each one of us has for our companies that leads us to come to our annual conference to learn how to have better companies, a stronger IBDEA, and a stronger industry. It shows through the members of IBDEA. I’m proud to be a member, and I’m proud to have been the leader these past two years. I see the direction of IBDEA moving forward and working together more closely as other guidelines and programs are created. We may not be big but we are strong.

I look forward to seeing everyone at conference this year. It is really the place to come together, raise the roof, have some fun, and throw away the work to be done, by understanding that your issues are not as big as they seem with the support of your friends at IBDEA. Together we will become great, strong and proud.

Thank you for the opportunity to share my experiences and gain so many more, to learn how to have better company, and most of all to enjoy the company of so many that I consider friends. May the next years be just as wonderful. See you on March 7!

A Thought For Your DayBy Mark Simon

Thanks to Mark Simon of Sodibar in Washington, DC. Mark is a Past President of IBDEA.

If you have ever read any of Frederick Reichheld’s books

on customer retention, you will understand clearly the follow-

ing points. “The instant you fall into the trap of trying to service everybody, you’re not going to be the best for any-body”. That is one of his more famous lines.

For any small business the hardest thing is to turn away a new customer. We are all competing for the same custom-ers to begin with. The real fact is what makes a customer. Someone who costs you money is really a liability – not a customer.

Sometimes customers all but advertise their undesirability. These are customers we do not want. We’d like to lose them. We seem to always be fighting with them over mon-ies, service, and deliveries or just about anything they can gripe about.

We often receive a phone call from the past potential cus-tomer who had complained about our pricing or delivery policy but now realizes you get what you pay for. The smart thing to do is to invite him to take his business elsewhere. It is tough to do. But sometimes you just need to fire that customer.

This is easier to do when a company has a policy of what makes a customer worth having or knows where the pa-rameters are that work both for you and your customers. If a customer is not willing to work together at a price that is fair and reasonable, you probably would do better to just say goodbye.

In quoting the past president of Taco Bell – John Martin: “If you wait until it’s broken to fix it, there may not be anything left to fix….Innovate or evaporate.”

How To Develop Your Great Future By Boaz Rauchwerger

After doing a recent seminar in Columbia, South Carolina, I had the opportunity to interview the CEO of another company that is succeeding in the current economy.

I spoke with Ben Arnold, the President of Arnold Companies. They are commercial real estate developers and a construction company. Ben had started the property management portion of the company in 1994 and Arnold Construction in 1995.

Before forming his companies, Ben’s family had a base of some small properties in the early 90’s. From that, they branched out to multi-family units, office, and industrial buildings. The combined companies now have nearly 50 employees.

Like many companies, the Arnold Companies have gone through some challenges with the economy in the past few years. As Ben told me, “We’ve had some struggles with existing tenants moving out of buildings. We’ve had to re-negotiate some leases like a lot of other landlords around the country.

But, we’ve been able to be flexible, to work with out tenants, and to treat them as if we’re partners – not just landlord versus tenants.”

I asked Ben what he did, in recent years, to keep his attitude positive. He stated, “It was a number of things. I surrounded myself with good people. I also kept my body in shape and I looked into the future. We worked at predicting the cycle and where we are in the cycle. And, knowing that a better day is coming.”

I learned that, at the Arnold Companies, they do some innovative things when it comes to renovating apartment buildings.

“Our niche,” related Ben, “is renovating low-income housing in rural communities. What makes us different is that we do it while the tenants are living in the units.

They leave in the morning and they come back at night and we’ve replaced the kitchen cabinets, appliances, and vinyl. And, if we have to carpet and paint, we do that on another day.

It’s really a methodology of moving people around, organizing what they do, and our clients maintain their cash flow while we’re doing the work.”

When I asked Ben for his advice for anyone who is struggling with the current economy, he said, “Don’t lose hope. Surround yourself with good people. And, recognizing opportunities is the key to success. Opportunities go by every day and, if you’re focusing on the negative, or dwelling on what’s going on right this second, you’re missing the opportunities right in front of you.”

Thus, the secret to Ben’s success is that he’s looking forward rather than backwards. I think that’s a very important point for all of us to keep in mind as we develop our own futures.

An Uplifting Affirmation

I look forward toward great opportunities...

4 Keys To Exiting Your StartupEven if you’re at the early stages of a startup with no intention of leaving, having an exit strategy is crucialby Mark Tepper, CFP, Special to Upstart Business Journal August 13, 2012

Thinking about starting a business? You might as well ponder your potential

exit strategies at the same time—even if you plan on running your company for a lifetime. The reality is that most entrepre-neurs don’t begin to plan their exit until an economic or life event forces their hand, neglect that can sabotage the return on a life’s investment of ideas, time, energy, and capital.

Typically, successful entrepreneurs pour countless hours into nurturing their business and managing it for growth. Weeks, months, and even years are devoted to developing processes and procedures for running the business, but barely hours or even minutes are spent on developing an exit strategy for the business owner.

Failure to plan for a graceful, financially advantageous exit from your business becomes especially problematic when the business’s value is a core component of the retirement nest egg. A well-conceived exit strategy can facilitate receipt of the maxi-mum sale price and help ensure a comfort-able retirement.

Start from square oneAs a business’s sale is considered, it is im-portant to start from square one. Detach yourself from your role as owner and begin to view your company through the eyes of a prospective buyer. Potential buyers will pay a multiple of your cash flow (typically earn-ings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization, EBITDA) based on how risky they perceive your business to be. Quite simply, the more risk, the lower the mul-tiple. Therefore, the two-pronged goal is to increase your EBITDA while simultaneously minimizing risk in your business.

It is important to simultaneously develop a financial plan. For many entrepreneurs, the business is their retirement nest egg, so inte-grating business and personal planning will help determine the sale price needed to fund a retirement lifestyle. This approach will also help the entrepreneur map the best course of action to reach their target valuation.

Bullet-proof your business modelStructure the business so that it’s indepen-dent of you. Businesses that are dependent on the owner become very risky investments once that individual departs. To put this into practice, appoint or hire someone to operate the daily business activities and learn how to govern the company from a distance.

Once an individual is identified to manage the business’s day-to-day operations, make sure that he and other key employees will stay with the business. Key employees may be vital to the deal, so ensure that noncom-pete agreements are in place. Also, consider setting up nonqualified deferred compen-sation plans for those key employees with vesting schedules which will entice them to stay with new ownership after the sale.

Next, document systems and procedures. A “how-to” instruction manual in running your business can’t be in your head. The busi-ness needs to be able to run like a well-oiled machine immediately after you’re out of the picture.

Organize your business’s financial houseAvoid overconcentration by making a point to maintain a diversified customer base. When a company relies on a significant per-centage of its revenues from one customer, it becomes a very risky business to buyers.

Ensure that financial statements have been reviewed and audited and are readily avail-able. All potential buyers will want to see at least three years of statements—and they must be clear and easy to understand. As the seller, you will want to back out any “lifestyle” spending that had been run through the company, such as car payments, meals and entertainment, or vacation costs. Removing these expenses will help to increase your EBITDA.

It is also important to have a plan to address unpredictable roadblocks such as lawsuits, HR challenges, or accounting issues, which could translate to a lower multiple.

Assemble your teamBefore weighing any offers or making it known that you’re in the market to sell, build a team that can guide you through this process. You will need CPAs, financial planners, attorneys, and investment bankers in your corner as you prepare to sell.

It’s important to put trust and control in the hands of one quarterback who has experi-ence with exit planning—and this person cannot be you. For most entrepreneurs, this is the first time selling a business, so recruit-ing a seasoned adviser is vital to overall success. Select an adviser who will align their best interest with yours. The anointed quarterback will act as the intermediary to ensure that the rest of your squad is synchronized.

Selling your business can take nearly as much time and effort as building it. Above all, remember that you cannot begin the planning process too early—minimum lead time to adequately plan is three to five years. Ideally, you start thinking about your busi-ness exit strategy the day your doors open so that you can properly groom it for sale.

Get A Profile – just log into Google Places, Bing, and Yahoo. Follow the prompts to enter your profile. This isn’t instant; you’ll have to verify your information before it’s posted, so be patient.

Upload Things – pictures, videos, logos. The search engines like it when they see photos. Create a short video and upload it to YouTube as well.

Submit Your Site – sites like Localeze offer free listings.Make sure you have your local address and phone number on your site. You can also have your customers submit reviews – just put the request in your email signature, your invoices, etc. Make sure you periodically check to see how you are being reviewed, it can help you refine your business practices and improve your services.
