Brief Description • Churchill’s full name was Sir Winston

Leonard Spencer-Churchill.• He was a politician for Britain during

World War 2.• He was prime minister of Britain in

1940 to 1945 and again from 1951 to 1955.

• Churchill was an officer in the British Army, a historian, a writer, and also an artist.

• He is the only British Prime Minister to have ever received the Nobel Prize in Literature

• He was the first person to be recognized as an Honorary Citizen of the United States.

Childhood • Winston's father was Lord Randolph

• His birth date was November 30, 1874.• Winston was very independent and

rebellious as a child. He did poorly in school which often got him punished.

• He attended three independent schools: St George's School followed by Brunswick School and then at Harrow School, where his military career began.

• At Harrow School Churchill did very well in history and English, he was in the schools rifle corps. He was also the schools star fencer.

• Churchill's father died at a young age of forty five, this left Churchill thinking he too would die young which let him realize he had to make a difference in the world and he had to do it sooner then later.

Marriage and Family • Winston was married on September 12, 1908 too Clementine Hozier.• They had five kids. • The first born was Diana who was born on July 11,1909.• On May 28, 1911 their second child Randolph was born.• Their third child Sarah was born October 7, 1914.• There fourth child marigold had come down with a cold and they thought that she had recovered but they

found out she had septicaemia which turned fatal and she died on August 23, 1921 at only three years old.

• Finally there fifth and last child Mary was born on September 15, 1922

Military Years• He applied for cavalry instead of

infantry since it was easier to be in cavalry and you wouldn’t have to take a math class.

• Winston graduated eighth out of one hundred and fifty in his class.

• He wanted to make a lot of money which he wasn’t doing when he was only a second lieutenant and so he took an interest in war correspondence.

• He used his mother and fathers influence to help him out in getting people to listen to him.

• In 1893 Winston applied for the Royal Military College, it took three attempts but he finally passed the test to get in.

• In 1895 Winston was sent to Cuba to observe the Spanish fighting with the Cuban Guerillas.

• He made some money writing about the fight to the Daily Graphic a news paper business.

• While in Cuba he started smoking Havana cigars which he would continue for his whole life.

• In 1897 Churchill went to Malakand with three brigades of the British army under the command of General Jeffry.

• While they were out scouting the area they ran into an enemy tribe and opened fire.

• They were out numbered and had to retreat.

Winston is often seen in pictures giving his “V” sign and with a cigar in his mouth.

Political Career• In 1900 Churchill ran for the seat of Oldham.

After making two attempts he finally won the seat in Parliament. After winning he went on a speaking tour in the United States and Britain, raising 10,000 Euros which was letting him get closer to his dream of being rich.

• During his first session of parliament he disagreed with a lot of things the British government was doing or wanted to do, because of this he was deselected of being able to run for the seat again.

• In 1904 he joined the Liberal party where he shared his ideas of free trade.

• When Henry Campbell Banner became prime minister in 1905 Winston became “Under-Secretary of State.” He was selected to deal with South Africa after the Boer war. He also started writing his fathers biography.

• In 1906 Winston was chosen for a seat in the Manchester North West, he won with a huge vote in his favor. When Herbert Henry Asquith became prime minister, Winston joined the Cabinet as President of the Board of Trade.

• While working in the Cabinet Winston introduced the first minimum wages for Britain, he also set up a program to help unemployed people find work and another program which set up pension for unemployed people.

• Winston helped write the Peoples Budget, a plan that introduced new taxes on the wealthy and also introduced welfare to Britain. The bill was passed by the House of Commons but denied by the House of Lords.

World War 1 and 2• In 1911 Winston was put in the office of the First Lord of the Admiralty. Where he started

creating the British Air force, he proposed ideas of new and bigger warships and he also suggested to switch from coal to oil in the Navy,

• Winston helped with the development of the tank. People thought at first that the tank was a waste of money but later they decided it was a good idea.

• For several months Winston was working in the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, he felt like he wasn’t doing any help there and left the government to be a commander on the Western Front.

• He then went back to England and joined the House of commons again.

World War 2• During World War 2 Winston was made a

member of the War Cabinet and was also apart of controlling the Royal Navy.

• On May 10th 1940 hours before the Germans attacked the French the current prime minister Neville Chamberlain resigned, the person next in line Lord Halifax declined the position and therefore Winston Churchill became Prime Minister.

• On top of being Prime Minister he also took the position as the Minister of Defense.

• He had good relations with President Roosevelt which gave him several advantages.

• Roosevelt allowed Britain to use their trade routes

• Roosevelt also set up the lend-lease Act. An act that allowed Britain to use The united states war items.

End of Life• After World War 2 he served another term

as prime minister. He served as prime minister from 1951 to 1955 when he resigned.

• In 1949 he started experience mild strokes. During 1953 he had another stroke that was more then mild.

• After his time as prime minister he was offered to be made Duke of London but he declined because his son did not want to be Duke when his father passed away.

• In 1963 Winston was made the first Honorary Citizen to the US

• In 1965 he passed away at ninety years old of a stroke.
