Located just above the cattle guard at the end of Kluncy Canyon Road the Bloody Shins Trails offer miles of rolling single track which provide trail users with endless views of both near and distant mountain ranges.

These trails, because of their location are easily acces-sible to both residents and visitors. The trails are available for non-motorized uses such as: mountain biking, jogging/hiking, and horseback riding.

Trails are currently marked with signs. The beginner loop is 7 miles long (green signs), the intermediate trail cover-ing a distance of 12 miles (blue signs), the advanced trail which totals 17 miles (black signs). Bloody Shins Trails were designated October of 1998. These are the first trails to be developed in the Winnemucca Mountain Trail System. Part-ners in the project included: BLM-Winnemucca Field Office, Bikes and More, the Winnemucca Convention and Visitors Authority, and the Nevada Division of Forestry, Rose Creek Honor Camp.

Additional trails are now available on Winnemucca Mountain.

In August 2013, a group of citizens met to discuss how to bring community service programs and facilities to Winnemucca, Nevada. This conversation led to starting a Boys & Girls Club of Winnemucca. The overwhelming sup-port and interest at these initial meetings made it obvious there was sufficient momentum needed to move forward.

In November 2013, local citizens at a community forum meeting voted to form an advisory group. By the end of the month, the Winnemucca Community Improvement Group with 15 community leaders was established with Ray Parks as the Chair. This group would explore all options including working with Boys & Girls Club of America to become an independently chartered organization. A community needs assessment was conducted and identified the Boys & Girls Club as a priority for the Winnemucca community. This study showed that 91.8% of respondents were in support of this project.

A Board of Directors, representing a varied group of public and private entities has come together to develop a comprehensive plan to improve youth development, community health and wellness, educational advance-ment, sports, and community recreation. One of the key indicators showing community involvement regarding this

project is to look at the make-up of the Board of Direc-tors and their affiliations. This diverse Board of Directors represents integral organizations of our community includ-ing Superintendent of Schools, Mayor, City Administrator, County Judge, County Commissioner, City Council, Gold Mine management, Hospital representation, Boys & Girls Club representation, local business owners, and commu-nity citizens. We are proud to announce that 100% of the Winnemucca Board of Directors has pledged support to this project for a grand total of $152,000.

In August 2014, the City of Winnemucca secured the funding and site for Phase 1 of the new Recreation Com-plex at 3640 Great Basin Avenue. Land development and site infrastructure outlines Phase 1 of the project. This includes design fees, roads, site preparation, utilities, light-ing, landscaping, and securing the 43 acre site that gives the necessary land for this initiative and any future projects. This entire phase is being managed and governed by the City of Winnemucca.

In Phase 1, the City of Winnemucca committed $1,620,000, Humboldt County committed $1,000,000, and the Winnemucca Convention and Visitors Authority com-mitted $500,000 to build this new complex. The Humboldt

County School District has made this a priority by commit-ting $440,000 in furnishings, fixtures and equipment, as well as $60,000 for in-kind services. The school district and our organization are also collaborating on the new STEM center. The high school will conduct STEM programs during the school day and the Boys & Girls Club will utilize these facilities to offer their programs during the evening.

On May 4th, 2015 our community was awarded the right of a Boys and Girls Club of Winnemucca, under the auspices of the Boys and Girls Club of Truckee Mead-ows. It is our intention to be an independent club within the next 18 months. The Winnemucca community has a population of just over 8,000 individuals and has 3,400 children between the ages of kindergarten – 18 years old. It is projected that the Winnemucca Boys & Girls Club will also serve 25% of their community for a total of 650 – 850 members.

Our current goal is to secure funds for Phase 2 with a capital campaign, leading to a groundbreaking of the Boys & Girls Club Facility in late 2015 with a grand opening in late 2016. You can go to www.bgcwin.org to donate or to find out more information about this amazing project.
