Neighbourhood Alert

There have a couple of reported incidents of cars driving onto properties with the occupants claiming to represent a religious organisation.

In one case, the vehicle drove some 700 metres off the road into the property, leaving several gates open, and 4 people were observed wandering around various sheds and outbuildings. No attempt had been made to approach the house.

The owner confronted the group and they claimed to be “Mormons”. He then asked for identification and he was offered a pamphlet, but the group refused to provide any identification.

The owner ordered them to leave and

2016 FIREWORKS / AUCTION FUNDRAISER

The staff and students of Windellama school would like to extend a massive thank you to the Windellama Public School P&C members for their tireless effort in organising another fantastic Fireworks/Auction function. Their efforts were rewarded by a profit margin that will be added to their current funds. The P&C has been fundraising to raise funds for the installation of an all-purpose court at school. Thanks again to all those hard workers. We witnessed a successful event with the Auction providing entertainment, the kitchen outlet supplying delicious food, the students ‘manning’ a couple of stalls, Kein for Caffeine keeping us in hot drinks and Foti displaying their fireworks once again. There were also other outlets where the children were kept entertained. We also thank Graham Kinder for donating his time as our auctioneer. We are sure many a bid was increased by the fun bantering between the audience and Graham. We would also like to thank the wider community for their continued support of our Fireworks/Auction Fundraiser by attending and buying up at the Auction and also contributing items towards the Auction and the catering. A thank you to the Windellama Fire Brigade for attending and keeping a

watchful eye out on events. Thanks to the Windellama Progress Society for enabling us to hire the hall on what is a busy weekend for them. The school also wants to recognise the continued contributions from the Goulburn and surrounding businesses as without their continued support we would not be able to hold such an event.

WINDELLAMA P&C FIREWORKS AND AUCTION NIGHT

We were so pleased with how this year’s P&C Fundraiser went. We feel very lucky and very proud that so many of our school community and greater Windellama community got involved and helped out where they could. Our dedicated P&C always work tirelessly to ensure this event is successful and we thank them for it.

TERMS WORK This term we continued to work with students and staff from our Tablelands Rural Education Community (TREC). The Kindergarten, Year 1 and Year 2 students across the 5 schools completed work on Australia and Australian Animals. The senior students participated in a History unit from the new Australian Syllabus, entitled ‘Australia as A Nation.’ All senior students were introduced to new technology to help them engage with fellow students from other schools on a daily basis. All of our schools involved are very well equipped with technology and we engaged with one another through video conferencing. We went along to Collector Public School where students shared the knowledge they had gained over the term. Senior students researched and dressed up as a former Prime Minister of Australia and presented with 2 other students from TREC. Next week we will all attend an excursion to the National Zoo and Aquarium and Parliament House. We thoroughly enjoy these days!

Oallen Ford Bridge

The significant investment in the Oallen Ford Bridge has clearly payed off as seen when floodwaters hit the area earlier this week after significant rainfall.

When Council planned this bridge it was determined to provide a structure that gave continuous access across the Shoalhaven River in the majority of floods. Last weekend’s rain event has clearly shown that the height of this bridge will still allow motorists to pass over it even in moderate to high rainfall events.

Mayor Geoff Kettle said “I am proud of this Council’s achievements - this is yet another example of improved infrastructure where the community benefits greatly. With a roads budget amounting to just under $13.5 million for the 2016/17 financial year we will continue to invest in the infrastructure of Goulburn Mulwaree.”

Over 150mm fell over Saturday, Sunday and Monday in the Shoalhaven catchment area, resulting in significant rising flood water. The water reached just under the 7m mark at the peak on Monday afternoon; however the new bridge easily cleared this, allowing traffic to move freely in both lanes.

Update on Windellama Landcare; The Chain of Ponds

Hello Everyone!

First of all I wanted to send out a brief thankyou to everyone who came to our last working bee.

The Windellama Landcare group last met up on Saturday the 30th of May to revisit and assess the works done at the Chain of Ponds Site (Near Sandy Point Rd). The main work done at this site was the construction of a picket (or pin) weir to help minimise erosion. The picket weirs are rows of several pickets all hammered into the ground across a watercourse. In times of flooding the picket weirs capture debris, which settles to build a dam. This in turn helps reduce the speed of water that travels along the watercourse and dramatically reduces the amount of erosion on the lee side of the weir. The group was pleasantly surprised to see just how well the Chain of Ponds picket weir had been in minimising erosion.

President Kevin brought along a modified jackhammer which had a picket driving head. With this, we all had a firsthand demonstration of how much quicker similar jobs could be done with this mechanical aid going into the future.

Our next meeting is scheduled for Saturday the 10th of September, so please save the date if you’re interested in coming along. More details about the next meeting will be included in next month’s issue.

Kind Regards, Jade Kinder Secretary Windellama Landcare

From Tom Bryant

A GOOD STORY BY BISHOP BARLOW. "IT'S A MISSUS."

At the welcome social last evening Bishop Barlow related a capital story regarding his motor car. When he had decided to obtain one he was speaking, he said, to an old gardener named Jim.

"What do you think," said his Lordship, "I am going to take back to Australia with me?" The man was a Welshman and thought deeply. "I hardly know, sir," he said slowly "Well," continued the Bishop, "It’s something I want very badly. It's a thing that's going to make me go like the wind. Now can you guess, Jim?"

Still he hesitated. "It's a thing that sometimes sticks me up.” But Jim could not guess yet. "It begins M" urged the Bishop. Like a flash Jim's face lit up. "I know, sir, it's a Missus" When the

climax came the large audience was for some time convulsed with laughter.

(Goulburn Evening Penny Post 26 September 1908, page 4)

Asked by the Bega Mayor how he liked his motor car, Bishop Barlow likened it to the boy, who when he was good, was very good, but when he was bad, he was horrid.

(Ulladulla and Milton Times 31 October 1908, page 2)

BISHOP BARLOW'S TRYING EXPERIENCE

SUNDAY'S STORM

His Lordship Bishop Barlow had an exciting experience on Sunday. He was at Windellama for confirmation; and soon after starting from there on the road via Bronte to Tarago he encountered the perfect deluge that was experienced in that district. The road was completely blocked within two miles of Tarago, and it was impossible to proceed any further. The confirmation service proposed to be held at that place had to be abandoned, and efforts were made to return in the motor to Goulburn. On the road the Bishop met with still worse weather, and after proceeding some distance was bailed up by the flooded condition of the thoroughfare; the water running level with the tops of the fences. The kind assistance of two sons of Mr Chesterton helped the

Bishop through this difficulty. With all hands to work to remove the logs and debris from one side of the road, giving the water an escape, the level, was reduced to about a couple of feet, and through this the motor was able to plough its way. All went well after this until Mr S A Taylor's place was reached. It was pitch dark and already six hours had been spent on the road. The water was blocked at the creek near Mr Taylor's residence. Mr Taylor came to the rescue, and on horseback preceded the motor, which, much to the surprise of everybody, ploughed through without the engine stopping. A further wait had to be made at Mr W. Wood's until the creek waters subsided, allowing the motor to proceed. The party arrived in Goulburn at nine o'clock. The Bishop was due not only for confirmation service at Tarago, but for evening service at Lake Bathurst, both of which engagements had, of course, to be abandoned. The Bishop was accompanied by the Rev. G Soares, and, as might well be imagined, every member of the party had a distinctly damp time. His Lordship left for Lake Bathurst on Monday afternoon.

(Goulburn Evening Penny Post 19 January 1909 p4.)

(Continued from page 17)

This month, even only 20 days old has certainly been very busy for us, both in SES and CFR work. All this has been made easier by the efficient way in which our team members have carried out their responsibilities.

Speaking of responsibility, I cannot understand why people ignore common sense when travelling in flood situations. It was our Windellama Unit members who kept an eye on the water levels in the local streams, myself accompanied by one other member patrolled this side of Nadgingomar Creek, whilst Irene was on the look out on the Eastern side of that creek.

I must point out that as SES members we have certain powers under the Act which is our responsibility, that is, Floods Storms And Tsunamis, (this will be explained in next months edition) then people will not be surprised if we issue certain instructions which are contrary to their opinion.

It is raining quite heavily as I type this, who knows, one may be back on the flood watch tonight as there is worse to come,(1610 hrs 19th June)

The Goulburn RSL had a morning tea, to which volunteers were invited to on the 16th, they are to be congratulated for being so willing to appreciate the efforts of volunteers from whatever service.

Remember folks, we meet on 2nd and 3rd Monday of each month at 1830 hrs so why not come along and see what activity is on that particular night.

June In Your Garden By Irene Turner

There is plenty to do in the garden this month.

Rose and fruit trees can be planted, and deciduous flowering trees such as prunus, flowering cherry, crab apple, flowering peach, lilac, laburnum vossi(golden chain tree) and pink and red hawthorn.

Larger trees such as liquidambar, box elder , golden elm, claret and golden ash and silver birch. Also the weeping cherry, crab apple, elm, mulberry and Japanese maples, make a special specimen tree for the middle of the garden.

Roses and fruit tree pruning can start this month . I like to prune my roses the first week in August, make sure you spray with Lime Sulphur as soon as you can after pruning.

VEGETABLES

Sow broad beans, peas and all varieties of onions (white, odourless and brown), rhubarb, strawberries and asparagus crowns. Rhubarb plants can be divided every three years , plant in compost and half cow manure.

FLOWERS

Seedling for sowing; Stock, viola, primula, wallflower, Russel lupins, delphiniums, foxglove, poppies, sweet William and calendula, alyssum, snapdragons, verbena, dianthus and sow seed of Virginian stock.

Plant summer –flowering bulbs such as lilium, calla and vallota, plant in pots or well-drained garden beds.

LEMON TREES

Lemon must have plenty of sunshine. Planting against a north-facing wall or fence keeps lemons warm and sheltered in the winter. All citrus love regular watering, but nothing kills them more than soggy soil. If planting them in the ground , form a mound that is 15-30cm high and about 1m wide. Mulch the surface to protect the fine surface –feeding roots. Dig in plenty of compost and well-rotted manure .

Dwarf lemons are ideal for pots.. For the perfect growing medium, blend equal parts of premium potting mix, coarse sand and garden soil with mushroom compost.

Feeding , lemons are hungry plants and need regular feeding. Use a blended organic fertilizer

every six weeks from spring to autumn, applying thinly around roots from the trunk to drip zone.

Never feed a flowering lemon, as it can cause fruit drop. Wait until the fruit are pea-sized. You

can feed with citrus feed. Water lemons deeply and regularly, particularly during dry periods.

Inconsistent watering can lead to early fruit drop, dry fruit and splitting. Maintain a 7cm layer of

mulch around root zone to conserve soil moisture and inhibit weeds. Annual pruning maintains

shape and size. Remove dead, spindly branches anytime.

Bitumen Spray Sealing is the most common road surface used in Australia. A bitumen seal is formed by spraying of a bitumen binder and covering with a layer of aggregate. A seal may contain more than one application of binder and/or aggregate. It can be used as a surface for the following:

Rural roads and driveways Urban and residential streets Subdivisions Car parks Patching

(CONTRACTOR LICENCE NUMBER: 216200C)

THE BITUMEN BANDITS ARE BACK IN TOWN OFFERING CHEAP BITUMEN THAT THEY HAVE ‘LEFT OVER’ FROM A JOB

QUESTIONS YOU NEED TO ASK AND WHAT TO LOOK OUT FOR

1. Is the road base up to the required standard? A minimum of 100mm compacted road base should be used for car traffic.

2. Are they using hot bitumen? Or is it warm emulsion which is 50% water?

3. Is the stone they are using pre coated? Is it to the normal standard of 14mm base & 7mm top? Pre coated stone is used to bond with the bitumen. Non pre coated stone will not stick and could wash away.

4. Is the spray rate the standard 2.1 litres per m2? If below the standard, there may not be enough bitumen to stone ratio, resulting in stone not sticking.

5. Have you been supplied with a certified, calibrated spray truck? Like scales in supermarkets, if the sprayer is not calibrates, the spray rate could be incorrect.

6. Are they a local trustworthy company? A quick web search could turn up vital information.

WILLOWGLEN GARDEN CLUBBERS June Meeting

It was a cold windy day, but nice and cosy inside near the wood fire. About 12 people attended and we had a number of apologies. Some were overseas and others over water and couldn't get through.

We had our meeting and discussed various garden aspects. Irene brought along some white lilac trees (suckers), some camellia cuttings and 2 Catalpa plants. Irene has some seeds if someone wants them. She also brought along some quince paste and persimmon paste she had made; very nice. She also brought some persimmons for us to enjoy. Warren said his broad beans have finally broken the surface, about 2 weeks later than the packet said; may have been the rain.

Rainfall: Warren said we had 32mls for May and for the year to end of May, 233.5mls. For June until 7th, we had 183.5mls and very happy. All dams and tanks are full and creek is running.

Warren told the meeting of a dog attack on our sheep on Sunday 29th May. We have lost a Ram and one of our ewes were attacked. She is now OK. There were 3 dogs, a big white one (something like a Merimo) and 2 small foxy terrier types, both with collars, one red and one blue. He followed them from our place up along Sandy Point Road and past Cullulla Road and they went under the fence along Sandy Point Road. This attack and information has been reported to the police.

Warren also reported he had attended a meeting where the speaker was an oncology and remedial massage person. Warren also said he had had dry needling and it has helped with the pain he has suffered for over 10 years.

We rugged up and went for a walk around the garden (most of us), and got some small salvia plants that had grown in the lawn from seeds blown from main bush. Some also got some wisteria seeds. The men went to see John's 'toys'.

John and Carolyn are in the process of making a huge plant shed with poly pipe over star pickets and deciding the best cover to put over it. Looks very good. They want to grow their vegetables and herbs under it and protect them from frosts and birds etc.

The July meeting, Tuesday 5th will be at St Bartholomew Church yard to do a tidy up with the Windellama Garden Club. This is a yearly event. Please bring spades, rakes, secateurs as well as morning tea and we welcome anyone who can come and give us a hand with the Church grounds on the day.

WILDLIFE HABITAT & NATIONAL TREE DAY

By Kay Muddiman – Media Officer

As any wildlife carer will tell you, it’s one thing to save and raise injured or orphaned wildlife to the point that they are ready to be released back into the wild, but it’s entirely another thing to have sufficient safe habitat in which to release them. Such areas are dwindling by the day due to human development – be it for housing, industry, mining, farming, logging or roads etc. etc. Laws that are supposed to protect the environment and our wildlife simply aren’t working, and proposed changes to the law in NSW will only make matters worse. It’s so frustrating, and we often wonder just what we can do as individuals to remedy this situation. Where the bigger picture is concerned, aside from signing petitions, lobbying governments, local MP’s (and if you are inclined and able to, taking part in peaceful protests and demonstrations) there doesn’t seem to be much. However, on a personal level we CAN take action to increase habitat for our wildlife – we can plant trees! In the scheme of things one might say ‘what difference is one tree going to make?’ However, added together every single tree (or shrub) planted amounts to many, and does help. It might be just one little creature that benefits by finding it a suitable food source, nesting place or spot to be safe from predators, but that little creature will thank you. A friend of mine often quotes ‘ think globally, act locally’, and this is one way that we can all act locally. So, please support National Tree Day and get planting!

WHAT & WHEN IS NATIONAL TREE DAY?

National Tree Day is on 31st July and Schools Tree Day is on 29th July. Together they combine to make Australia's biggest community tree-planting and nature care event. These are special days for all Australians to help out by planting and caring for native trees and shrubs to improve the environment in which they live. National Tree Day started in 1996 and since then more than 3 million people have planted 21 million seedlings!

A SPECIAL DAY FOR SCHOOLS

Each year, around 200,000 Australian school students participate in a special National Tree Day event designed just for children – Schools Tree Day! It’s a wonderful opportunity for children to

make a contribution to Australia’s natural environment and have lots of fun at the same time. Getting involved in Schools Tree Day is a great thing to do. You can see your teachers get their hands dirty, make your school look beautiful, have fun with your friends and help the environment all at once!

NATIVE PLANTS

National Tree Day and Schools Tree Day promote planting and caring for native trees and plants. It is important to plant species that are local to your area, so that local biodiversity is maintained. Even in urbanised areas there can be remnant native plants that represent an important source of local biodiversity, often threatened by the pressures of urban living.

ENVIRONMENTAL BENEFITS

National Tree Day aims to inspire, educate and recruit Australians to actively care for our unique land and create future generations of committed environmental custodians. Plants help to combat climate change by locking up carbon, but there are more ways that native plants can help address the impacts of climate change. Before Climate Change was the "hot" topic in the environmental debate, the loss of biodiversity was internationally recognised as being the major threat facing the future of life on our planet.

EVERY PLANT COUNTS

This year for National Tree Day you're invited to participate at home – plant a tree or shrub in your own backyard or on your balcony – it WILL make a difference!

Should you need advice or help with injured or distressed wildlife, please ring our Branch Rescue Number – 4822 3888. Our volunteers will be only too happy to assist.

Until next time - take care all.

We met as planned at Di’s house in Nowra and all of the pot plants have survived their various moves and are now settling in. The lemon has lemons and she has been bequeathed a Seville Orange tree so I can make marmalade in the future! She had a working party present putting up a front fence so she can extend the garden and freesias are already popping up in the lawn. She has been told it used to have a lovely garden but the last owners removed just about everything including a large wisteria that used to form the front fence. Unfortunately while she was directing traffic some low life jumped the high back/side fence and entered the house pinching her cigarettes and purse. Hopefully he chokes on them. So during our gardening she had various coppers drop for discussion about the theft. Still we managed to get her staghorn fern attached to a board and fed it so now it has to grow. It has had a long life and several homes. Watching the fencers dig the post holes it was with envy that we saw red loamy soil come up and to a decent depth too. We are still to properly identify a small tree in the backyard but it may be a mango or avocado so we await the flowers next year.

Next month on 21st July we will gather at Kay’s home to distribute vegetable seeds and anything

else that has grown ready for the coming Spring. All welcome from 10am. That is providing the

forecast rain this weekend does not sweep me down the river to the Tallowa Dam.
