simatic hmiWith SIMATIC WinCC, perfectprocess visualization stands forcomplete operating and monitor-ing functionality under Windows2000 and XP for all industry seg-ments ranging from simple sin-gle-user systems through to dis-
tributed multi-user systems withredundant servers and the struc-ture of a cross-site solution includ-
ing Web clients on an Intranet orthe Internet.
The WinCC basic software is thecore of a large number of differentapplications. Based on open pro-gramming interfaces, a number ofWinCC options (by Siemens A&D)have been developed as well asWinCC add-ons (by Siemens inter-nal and external partners).
Version 6.0 SP2 of SIMATIC WinCCprovides important expansions andnew perspectives on process visual-
ization:
Archiving
Central archive server with up to80,000 archive tags
Flexible setting of the archivingmode for the data storage

SIMATIC WinCC V6.0 SP2Expansions for Archiving
2
SIMATIC WinCC is not only universally scalable, but is alsopossesses integrated archiving functions on the basis of theMicrosoft SQL Server 2000. This opens up many possibilitiesto the user ranging from a high-performance archiving ofcurrent process data and events, a long-term archiving withhigh data compression and backup function up to a centralinformation hub in the form of a company-wide Historianserver.
The WinCC basic system already provides 512 archive tags. With Powerpacks, this number can be upgraded to 1,500,5,000, 30,000 and with WinCC V6.0 SP2 to 80,000 archivetags. This allows powerful central archive servers with inte-grated Historian functionality to be set up.
A new Microsoft Excel-based SmartTool, the Archive Con-guration Tool, enables the convenient and quick congu-ration of a large number of archive tags including theirarchiving parameters. For this, an excel le (*.XLS) withmultiple workbooks is created for each archive. Uncom-pressed and compressed WinCC process value archives canbe created, deleted and edited.
Previously, the individual values of archive tags with acqui-sition cycles of less than one minute were automaticallysaved in compressed form (Tag Logging Fast Archive), whilethe remaining values were saved uncompressed in another
archive (Tag Logging Slow Archive). Now, the conguratorcan select the assignment and thus the archiving mode(compressed / uncompressed) independent of the acquisi-tion cycle.

Web-based communication via OPC XML
XML (Extended Markup Language) provides an open, simpleand interoperable format for data and client-server appli-cations based on that data. While HTML merely shows textsin the Browser, XML allows intelligent data to be shown thatdescribe the content as well as the display. With OPC XMLV1.0, this is now also possible for the automation area usinga manufacturer-independent communication protocol.
XML is completely independent of the operating system, platform, transport protocol or manufacturer, but has beenintegrated by leading providers into their applications andoperating systems. A large number of low-cost or free appli-
cations, tools and sources are available for XML. This takesplace via integrated XML interfaces. Ofce packages, ERP/
PPS systems, SAP/R3, B2B portals and market places utilizeXML for the seamless integration into the Web or betweenapplications.
The OPC XML DA client (DA = Data Access) is includedin the delivery scope of WinCC V6.0 SP2. For the serverfunctionality, the WinCC/Connectivity Pack V6.0 SP1 isrequired. As OPC server with XML interface, WinCC can senddata directly to PPS/MES systems and vice versa receive jobor recipe data. Whether the XML application is a Windowsapplication or from another operating system is irrelevant.
WinCC/Server operational underMicrosoft Windows Server 2003
With WinCC V6.0 SP2, the WinCC SCADA servers not onlyrun under Windows 2000 Server, but also under WindowsServer 2003.
Windows Server 2003 is based on the strengths of Windows2000, but at the same time distinguishes itself throughtrend-setting improvements. Windows Server 2003 is amulti-purpose operating system that can take on differentcentralized or distributed tasks. It has all the features thatcustomers expect of a company-critical operating system:
Security, reliability, availability and scalability

SIMATIC WinCC V6.0 SP2Expansions for the WinCC Options
WinCC Web server farms with multiple Web clients
Server farms with redundancyconcept and load balancing
In a coordinated system conguration,WinCC V6.0 permits a total of 12WinCC servers and 32 WinCC clientsper server. The servers themselves canbe congured as a distributed system. The viewing of the entire system isrealized via WinCC (SCADA) clientsthat simultaneously have access to orthe view of screens and data from dif-ferent server projects. Operator sta-tions are also possible in the formof Web clients, since on each WinCC(SCADA) client, server or single-usersystem, a Web server can be set up asdata concentrator. Each Web server inturn can supply up to 50 Web clientswith current or historical process data.
In mixed congurations with SCADAand Web clients, the following mixedquantity schedule limits - amongothers - can result (variations are pos-sible):
50 WinCC Web clients and1 WinCC SCADA-Engineering client,
or 32 WinCC SCADA clients and3 WinCC Web clients
With WinCC V6.0 SP2 and the optionsWinCC/Web Navigator V6.0 SP1 andWinCC/Dat@Monitor V6.0 SP1, serverfarms with multiple Web servers cannow be congured. Required for this isa Load Balancing license for the par-ticipating Web servers. With load bal-ancing, newly connected Web clientsare automatically assigned to the Webserver with the currently lowest load. The Web servers all have access to oneand the same WinCC project and canbe assigned up to 50 Web clients. In
total, several hundred Web operatorstations can be implemented .
Should the assigned Web server fail, the clients will try to connect toanother Web server of the server farm. This functionality can also be utilizedfor the switching of Web clients viaredundant WinCC servers. For this, anupgrade license from pure redundancyoperation to load balancing is avail-able.
of the products. An obligation to provide therespective characteristics shall only exist ifexpressly agreed in the terms of contract. Availa-bility and technical specications are subject tochange without notice.
New possibilities for access anddata exchange
The WinCC/Industrial DataBridge usesstandard interfaces to connect theautomation level (controls) with the ITworld and to ensure an informationow into both directions. The con-guration is carried out economically(without programming) via a standardsoftware. Typically, WinCC is the datasource and an external SQL databaseor ofce package the data target.
New in Version 6.0 SP1 are theaccess to historical data in the WinCCdatabase via the WinCC OLE DB pro-vider, dynamic SQL statements andthe option to store data in CSV format.
