Society News

Our newest volunteer at Salem Public Library is Mindy Lampert. She is a substitute volunteer and will al-so be our October speaker.

We do need more volunteers at Salem Public Library! We need to have two volunteers on each 3 hours shift. We need volunteers on afternoon shifts, 2 pm to 5 pm, on Thursday (two people), Friday (one per-son) and Saturday (one person). If you’d like to have a very rewarding experience, please contact Craig, Deanne or Liz.

The WVGS Executive Board and members at the September meeting agreed that no increase in dues is need for next year. So dues will remain at $25 for an individual or $30 for a family membership. We did make changes to the membership form (see page 7). You can now fill in information on your geograph-ical areas of research and favorite surnames that you are researching. We will be adding that information to the Members List on the Members Page. You could contact others with similar interests.

The editors of Beaver Briefs will be Dennis Hill-Production Editor, Ann Hill-Copy Editor, Craig Smith-Content Editor, and Liz Tice-Mailing/Secretarial Editor

Did you enjoy Jim Willhite’s article last month about Wilhoit Springs? If you have any short 1-page arti-cles of genealogical or historical interest that you’d like to have in the newsletter, I’m always looking for member stories. Send to me (Liz Tice) at our society email [email protected]

Reminders— Signing up for Fred Meyer Rewards costs you nothing and benefits WVGS. Instructions are on our website

under Help. The next genealogy class at the Senior Center 50+ will begin in January 2017. $30 for five 2-hour classes.

Beaver Briefs We have new editors in 2017 for our quarterly Beaver Briefs who have decided it’s a good time to make some changes. Sue Bell, with Sherrill Hochspeier as production assistant, researched, wrote and edited the quarterly for over 25 years. Sue has left us several years’ of material. However it is either written long-hand or clippings of arti-cles. We need typists! If you are familiar with Microsoft Word and would like to help out with typing, then we need you! We have lots of good material to transcribe. We would like to have more member involvement, a broader appeal and updated resources. So we are asking members to submit articles for Beaver Briefs. We’re interested in How did I research my ancestor. My most interesting ancestor. Using research sources, such as online newspapers. Genealogy topics such as Civil War research. Good sources. Marion county and Oregon settlers and history. If you’d like to submit an article, we’ll even help with editing and sources. Contact Craig Smith.

New on our website www.wvgsor.org Thanks to the hard work of Webmaster Dennis Hill we now have a BB Surname Index , for Beaver Briefs Volumes 40-48 (2010 to Vol 3 of 2016). This is for members only on the Members Page. You can search for a surname (listed in alphabetical order), find the volume(s) and page that the surname is on. This is wonderful for finding a name in our publication which are on the website for members to look at. We hope to scan more years and add to the surname index. Thank you Dennis!! Example: Surname: Volume: Issue: Page(s) Aamoth 42 3 28

Family Tree Maker

Page 4— October 2016 WVGS Newsletter

Family Tree Maker

This message was received from Software MacKiev: Family Tree Maker is alive and well. I f you hadn't yet heard the news yet up there in the Pacific Northwest, Family Tree Maker has been acquired by our company, Software MacKiev. Free Update for current editions. We are hard at work finalizing a free update for FTM 2014 and Mac 3 users. We have focused on stability and performance improvements. Still works with Ancestry.com. Our updated versions for Mac and Windows pick up right where Ancestry left off so you will still be able to get Ancestry's "shaky leaf" hints, and use TreeSync® to keep your Ancestry online tree in synch with the Family Tree Maker tree on your computer. In addition, WVGS member Linda Wiley, said “Thanks to the person that posted this infor-mation in the new newsletter! I was just get-ting ready to reload FTM on my computer--it was removed when I got a new computer some time ago. I immediately went to the link and read up on the transition. I loaded the FTM from a disc with no problem, then worked through a problem getting the Ancestry load-ed. Using Help setting, the MacKeiv instruc-tions were very clear and the download went well. I had previously been unable to properly sync the Ancestry tree with FTM so was very pleased it went through on the first try. I wasn't happy about the whole situation when it was announced they wouldn't support FTM any longer. McKiev seems to have the an-swer for keeping things pretty much as they were--FTM linked to Ancestry trees, although they say the sync isn't quite ready to go--they are working on it. If you click on the Help link while in FTM it goes to the McKeiv site--at least mine does now, but all the info looks like An-cestry's stuff. There aren't many solutions to the problem except going this route or switch-ing to an entirely new tree system (My Herit-age, etc.)”

Oregon Spectator The Oregon Spectator, was a newspaper pub-lished from 1846 to 1855 in Oregon City of what was first the Oregon Country and later the Oregon Territory of the United States. The Spectator was the first American newspaper west of the Rocky Mountains and was the main paper of the region used by politicians for public debate of the leading topics of the day. The paper's motto was West-ward the Star of Empire takes its way. A W.P.A. project was to index the Oregon Spec-tator: Oregon Spectator Index 1846-1854 (Two Volumes), W. P. A. Newspaper Index Project, Pub-lished by Oregon Historical Society, Portland, OR, 1941. Since reading the small print of old newspapers is difficult, having an index is very useful. If you are researching early Oregon people or history, you can see the index online through Oregon State University Library, Gerald W. Williams Col-lection, at https://ir.library.oregonstate.edu/xmlui/handle/1957/9399. It is a pdf document that you can download and search. (thanks to Avis Reddaway for this information)

Oregon Historical Newspapers Online

This site lists where you can find historical Ore-gon newspapers online, not only at Historic Ore-gon Newspapers but the Library of Congress. Google also has newsletter archives and there is also a site called Small Town Papers, for free. His-toric as well as recent newspapers online are in-cluded in the database, the years covered and whether the site is free or for a fee.

https://sites.google.com/site/onlinenewspapersite/Home/usa/or

To find a list of current Oregon newspapers, go to All Oregon, Oregon newspapers at http://www.all-oregon.com/state/info/newspapers.htm

And just a reminder that Tony Hoff, our Cor-responding Secretary, and his wife Sharon Hoff are doing a great job looking up obi-tuaries for the Society. He also subscribes to GenealogyBank.com so has access to old and new obituaries. Our fee is only $5 now as we are proposing an increase next year for non-members.

1812 Pension Files Campaign is Complete - #FGS2016 Credit: Ed Donakey

In a stunning announcement at the opening session of the 2016 conference of the Federation of Genealogical Societies (FGS), Curt Witcher announced that the fund raising goal of the Preserve the Pensions campaign has been met! The FGS project to raise $3.7 million dollars has been going on since 2010. The War of 1812 pension files are among the most frequently requested materials at the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) and have never been microfilmed or digitized. Since handling the files damages them, they needed to be digitized to prevent further damage. An anonymous donor made a contribution of $500,000, which Ancestry.com matched. FGS also acknowledged the individual conference attendees who included a donation along with their confer-ence payment. All told, over 4,000 individuals and 115 genealogical and lineage societies contributed money to the effort. Ancestry matched each donation. With ongoing cooperation from the project’s partners and major supporters, NARA, Ancestry, Fold3, and FamilySearch, these important documents will be made available free, forever to the general public.

The Family Tree Historical Maps Book: A State-by-State Atlas of U.S. History 1790-1900 By Leland Meitzler

Since Family Roots Publishing recently began marketing The Family Tree Historical Maps Book: A State-by-State Atlas of U.S. History 1790-1900, I figured it was about time to write a more detailed review of the book than I’ve been able to locate elsewhere. It’s easy to say that there are maps from all 50 states, in alphabetical order, but that doesn’t tell the whole story. First off, the book is printed in full color, with a color hard cover (no dust jacket). It’s 8.5 x 11 x 3/4 inches in size, and is 223 pages in length. It was printed in 2014. I’ve had a copy since the book came out and often refer to it. The maps are historic in nature, coming from the famed David Rumsey collec-tion. Since the book is only 8.5 x 11 in size, with many pages having two or more maps on a page, quite a number of the colorful maps had to be shrunk tremendously to fit them on the page. In some cases this caused the town names to be so tiny that they are nearly illegible. If this is the case, I recommend that the user let the map drive them to the David Rumsey collection online to view the map there. In many cases the type in the book is legible however, even though you might have to use your magnify-ing glass to read the print! The volume includes: Full-color historical maps of the United States from each decade of the nineteenth century. Detailed, full-color historical maps of all 50 states Charming nineteenth-century panoramic maps of key cities Special-interest maps, which provide intriguing peeks into American society from average family sizes to taxation per capita to regional industries Timelines for each of the states An expanded table of contents can be found on Leland’s site http://www.genealogyblog.com/?p=38744
