2015: 100 years of Chemical Engineering at Lafayette College

THEN NOW

Hart, Baker, and Adamson

Richard K. Meade (B.S. Chemistry, 1899; M.S. Chemistry, 1908)

“The Committee of Six” establishes The American Institute of Chemical

Engineers in January 1908

Hart, Adamson, and Meade all served on the Institute Council

100 years of CHE at Lafayette

• The College catalog first listed the course of study “Chemical Engineering” 1915-16.

• Ed Hart steps down as Chair of Chemistry to become first Professor of Chemical Engineering

• Hart writes first textbook bearing the name “chemical engineering” in 1921, published in Easton, PA.

Going Behind the Acronym:

What is AICHE?

AICHE

• American Institute of Chemical Engineers

• Approximately 40,000 members in 90 countries.

• Members from academia and industry.

• Resources available for all chemical engineers.

Membership in AICHE

• Being in ChE in Lafayette makes you an automatic member in the student chapter.

• From industrial donations, membership in the national chapter is free for all ChE undergrads.

• Apply at (form is one page): http://www.aiche.org/community/students/student-membership

What Does Membership Get You?

• Scholarship opportunities• Additional outlets for your future

– Internships (CareerEngineer)– Information about graduate school– Job postings (Note: Aimed at all chemical engineers)– Online mentorship program– Online career fair:
