Dear Whiteoaks Families,
Education Week is being celebrated at Whiteoaks this week. This year’s theme is “You Inspire”. As part of our Healthy Schools initiative this year, we are also inspiring physical activity and a healthy lifestyle. X Movement began leading physical activities with our students on Mon-day. X Movement will continue for the remaining classes on Thursday.
To experience the fun, physical activities in which our students are participating, we invite you to our Open House on the evening of Thurs-day, April 21st to join in the fun with your children and X Movement. (A grade-level schedule for X Movement is inserted in this newsletter along with a schedule of all activities for the week).
Yesterday our students participated in the traditional Education Week neighbourhood walk and the Big Crunch - Part 2. The weather was perfect for our walk where many signs of spring could be seen and heard. A big thank you to the students on the Healthy Schools Commit-tee who helped to prepare baskets of apples for each class for our se-cond Big Crunch! Thank you to Jacob L., Jacob P-A., Megan D., Nour M., Sean S., Matthew H., Gabriella M-S. and Yenna R. You did a great job!
Please come and visit your child’s classroom between 6:30 pm to 7:30 pm; and feel free to use your Whiteoaks Open House Passport to lo-cate featured areas of the school while you are waiting for your turn at X Movement, or for classroom visits to start. You may pick up your Open House Passport on Thursday night when you arrive at the school.
Don’t forget to bring any old batteries that you would like to contrib-ute to our battery recycling drive!
Just a reminder that Whiteoaks will participate in the MaraFun/Run-Walk
on May 1st . Our students have been practising hard with Mr. Kim daily dur-
ing nutrition breaks! MaraFun encourages young people to get active by
running or walking a full marathon over a period of weeks. On race week-
end, participants will finish 2 kilometres of the challenge on the actual mara-
thon route to the cheers of many spectators. Upon crossing the finish line,
each participant will receive a finisher’s medal and a certificate of comple-
tion! Whiteoaks has won the MaraFun Cup the past 4 years for having the
most students of any school participate, and we hope to repeat this again
this year! We are proud of the enthusiasm of our students, staff and commu-
nity!
For the safety and protection of students we require ALL VISITORS AND
Page 2 Whiteoaks Wednesday Weekly
PARENTS to report to the main office, sign in, and wear a VISITOR TAG. This is in keeping
with the Safe Welcome program implemented by the Peel District School Board in Sep-
tember 2013. This program stipulates that all school doors are locked to increase student
safety. To follow this policy to ensure the safety of our students, it is important that all visi-
tors and parents check in at the office. All visitors and parents must wear a visitor’s badge
if they enter the hall to drop off or pick up students at student entry, student dismissal, or
when classes are in session.
EQAO testing for all our Grade 3 students will occur on May 31st, June 1st and June 2nd
this year. We ask that you ensure that your child is in attendance during this time. We
would ask that you do not book any appointments for your child during the testing period
in order to ensure his/her consistent participation. Thank-you in advance for your support.
Yours in education,
G. Lorentz

Celebrating Faith and Culture
At Whiteoaks, we continue to work to be an inclusive school. To honour the fact that at Whiteoaks our student
body represents many cultures and faiths, we celebrate the faith and cultures at Whiteoaks regularly as they
occur, by reading messages about cultural celebrations over the announcements. In addition, we insert a chart
in each week’s newsletter indicating Days of Celebration, their dates and the Faiths and Cultures that observe
them. We have included the chart of celebrations for the upcoming weeks in this newsletter.

PALS Update
PALS students at Whiteoaks have been doing a wonderful job during
morning and afternoon outside recess. PALS students are walking around
the playground to monitor if students are engaged in some type of activi-
ty or playing with friends. Some of the comments that we have received
from our students are the following: "PALS students are so nice". "PALS
students are starting up some really fun games to play". "PALS students
are so friendly". It has been wonderful to see that students engaging in
fun safe activities together to ensure that Whiteoaks is a safe, fun and in-
clusive community.
Earth Day is coming up and it’s a great opportunity to beautify Ward 2, by removing trash in some of the areas that I regularly hear about. I am organizing an event on Saturday, April 23rd, 9 – 11 am, on Southdown Rd. We will have a group of participants starting up near South Sheridan Way, and an-other group at Lakeshore Rd. Each group will work their way toward Truscott, meeting up there. I will be supplying gloves and bags for this effort.
Anyone interested in participating should contact my office, either by phone or email. Many hands make light work!
Kind regards, Karen

Outreach Club would like to begin preparing some gifts now for our
'United for the Holidays Gift Extravaganza' fundraiser for United Way
fundraiser which will take place this fall. We are going to be learning to
sew "Oakie's Friends" stuffies, and are in need of supplies to get going.
If you can donate any 'squirrel coloured' or 'acorn coloured' fleece or
felt, embroidery thread in any colours, or packages of embroidery nee-
dles, we (and United Way!) would be very grateful. Any donations could
be left at the office care of Mme Wilson, or sent to her classroom.
Thank you in advance to our Whiteoaks community!
For upcoming projects, we also will be needing about 200
extra wide elastics, the kind that usually comes wrapped
around the stalk of your broccoli (see below). so nows
the time to eat more broccoli, get healthy, and help a
good cause all at the same time! We are also looking for Campbell's soup
sized cans, so please bring 'em in as you get 'em!
Thank you all for your help!

Looking for Paid Lunchroom Supervisors
Whiteoaks Public School is looking to hire additional paid Lunchroom Supervisors for the remainder of this school year and for the 2016-2017
school year!
Lunchroom Supervisors fill a very important role in the school. They supervise stu-
dents while they eat lunch in their classrooms and while they play outdoors during nu-
trition breaks. This is a great opportunity to get involved and make a difference for stu-
dents at Whiteoaks.
Hours of supervision range from 40 minutes to 80 minutes and can be flexible in order
to accommodate supervisor needs. Lunchroom supervisors can choose to do one or
two nutrition breaks and we are happy to hire full or part-time
If you are interested in becoming a Lunchroom Supervisor, please contact
our Vice-Principal, Mrs. Barnes, at 905-822-0451 to set up an interview.
Thank you for considering this important role.

Our Healthy School Community—Active Living Idea
The warmer temperatures and longer days of spring can be wonderful for outdoor activities after school.
Please consider these safety tips from the Peel Regional Police website: http://www.peelpolice.ca
Pedestrians are among the most vulnerable of road users. Effective January 1st new laws enacted to make Ontar-
io roads safer requires drivers to stop and yield the entire roadway at pedestrian crossovers and school cross-
ings. To assist drivers and pedestrians, Peel Regional Police would like to offer some safety tips:
Drivers
Obey the rules of the road including all traffic signs and signals;
Avoid any handheld electronic devices while driving;
Avoid other distractions and give driving your full attention;
Double check blind spots before changing lanes;
Drive within the posted speed limits and adjust accordingly to the weather and traffic conditions;
Apply extra care when entering and changing directions at an intersection.
Pay extra attention to pedestrians;
Keep your vehicle in good condition, with proper tires inflated at the correct pressure. Make sure your
brakes are in good working order and ensure your windshield is clean and free from obstructions.
Pedestrians
Pedestrian safety is in your hands. Be alert at all times to your surroundings;
Don’t rely solely on traffic signals or stop signs. Ensure that it is safe to cross the road before crossing;
Walk on sidewalks whenever possible;
Whenever possible use a crosswalk to cross the street. Avoid “jaywalking” or crossing the street between
vehicles;
Parents – ensure that you are aware of your children’s location and activity at all times. Do not allow young
children to play near roadways, unsupervised;
After dark, drivers cannot see people in dark clothing until it's too late. Wear bright clothing, something re-
flective or carry a lit flash light so drivers will see you.
Cyclists
Obey the rules of the road including all traffic signs and signals;
Make your presence known. Wear bright or reflective colour clothing. At night or in inclement weather, it is
important to use reflective lights in the front, side and rear that make you visible from all directions;
Do not run stop signs or red lights or use the wrong side of the street. It is best and safest to ride single file;
Make eye contact with drivers whenever possible. This ensures that the motorists see you and helps you assert your
rightful place on the road;
Make sure you are always aware of your surroundings. Know what is behind you and watch out for what is
in front of you;
Clearly communicate your intentions by using hand signals;
Make sure your brakes are always in top-notch condition. Be aware of how weather and road conditions can
affect your ability to brake.
Peel Regional Police are urging both drivers and pedestrians to be extra vigilant. Keep in mind that just because
you have the right of way doesn’t mean it is safe to utilize it. Officers from Road Safety Services want both driv-
ers and pedestrians to have a safe enjoyable year.
