TRANSCRIPT
Dear Whiteoaks Families,
This past week our Junior students enjoyed a visit from author Michael
Wade. Michael‟s presentation was very well received by our students. Please
see more information about his visit in this newsletter. Michael Wade‟s visit to
our Grade 4 and 5 students was paid for through funds allocated from School
Council fundraising. Thank-you so much to our community for supporting the
Council fundraising efforts that help us bring the special extras to Whiteoaks.
Our School Council meets the first Wednesday of each Month with the
exception of December and March. School Council agendas are sent out in
advance of the meeting to our community. Agendas not only let our commu-
nity know what items will be discussed, but also act as an invitation to all to at-
tend. School Council minutes are posted on the School website under the
School Council tab. Items discussed and decisions regarding the items are re-
ported in the minutes. Minutes are also posted on the
School Council bulletin board in the front foyer of the
school. I would invite you to take the time to read the
minutes to keep up-to-date regarding items discussed
at Council.
Last Wednesday, April 30th, our Parents
Reaching Out (PRO) presentation organized by our
School Council was very well attended. It was great
to see so many parents and guardians in attendance.
Karen Bouganim spoke to parents and guardians
about “Stopping the Power Struggle with your Kids”.
Karen presented strategies to respond to different
challenges and answered questions posed by our
parents and guardians. The evening was a great suc-
cess.
Our amazing Fun Fair is fast approaching. Each year it is a wonderful
event where our community comes together to support our school and to en-
joy the company of others in our learning community. This year‟s Fun Fair is
shaping up to be the best yet! Proceeds from the Fun Fair are used to bring
several enrichment activities to Whiteoaks each year that help create special
and memorable experiences for our students. We are still in need of volunteers
to support this year‟s Fun Fair. Please see the update in this newsletter from April
Napolitano regarding supporting this year‟s Fun Fair. Thank-you in advance for

EQAO Testing
EQAO testing for all our Grade 3 students will occur on May 27th, 28th and 30th this year. We ask
that you ensure that your child is in attendance during this time. We would ask that you do not
book any appointments for your child during the testing period in order to ensure his/her con-
sistent participation. Thank-you in advance for your support.
Celebrating Faith and Culture
At Whiteoaks, we continue to work to be an inclusive school. To honour the fact that at Whiteoaks
our student body represents many cultures and faiths, we celebrate the faith and cultures at
Whiteoaks regularly as they occur, by reading messages about cultural celebrations over the an-
nouncements. In addition, we insert a chart in each week‟s newsletter indicating Days of Celebra-
tion, their dates and the Faiths and Cultures that observe them. We have included the chart of
celebrations for this week in this newsletter.

My Morning as Principal
My name is Callum. I’m in Grade 2. On Thursday, May 1
st, 2014, I was the Principal for half the day. I chose my
friend Sean to be Vice-principal. It was a fantastic fun time! We got to fill up the ice bags with water for when people get hurt. We sorted letters for going home. I had my picture taken while I was sitting at Mr. Lorentz’s desk and my name was on the name plate! There are a lot of pa-pers on Mr. Lorentz’s desk and I like the mug Mr. Lorentz has. My friend and I also got pizza for lunch! I would be Principal every day if Mr. Lorentz let me.
Crochet Club
One session left this year:
Friday, May 9 (day 5) Boys and girls grades 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5!
12:20 -12:50 in Room 3 (Mme Mundy and Mrs. Rave)
Your child will need to bring a crochet needle (size G or larger) and plain
yarn of 4 ply weight (it says 4 and/or worsted weight and indicates that it has 4 plies to make up
one yarn string). Plain yarn (nothing fancy like furry or fuzzy yarn) is the best for beginners as it is
easier to identify the different parts of the stitch and how to count rows and stitches. Thicker yarn
(5 or 6 ply) and a larger crochet hook (size M or N) are recommended for small hands (grade 1s
and 2s).

Literacy Games from http://www.nwt.literacy.ca/resources/famlit/howtokit/moregame/
moregame.pdf See the Light
1. Two players leave the room and secretly decide upon a word.
2. They come back to the room and carry on a conversation between
themselves to help throw some light on what the word is. While
talking, they give hints about the word but they do not actually say
the word.
3. All the other players must try to guess the word by listening to the
conversation.
4. If a player thinks he knows what the word is, he calls out "I see the
light”, and then whispers his guess to one of the two lead players.
5. If he is correct, he joins the first two players in the conversation
while the rest of the players continue to guess.
6. If he is incorrect, he continues to listen and to guess the word.
7. The game continues until everyone has figured out the word.
Chess and Checkers Club
Grade 2 students are invited to participate in the Chess and Checkers Club every
Thursday during the lunch hour in Mlle Oliva‟s classroom. Come out and learn some
new games!
Numeracy Challenge
Here is this week‟s numeracy challenge:
Big Idea: To collect data, it is necessary to decide what information is appropriate and how to use that
information.
Primary Question: Think about a question you might ask your family to which there are three possible an-
swers. Conduct a survey and then graph the results.
Junior Question: Imagine a pizza order from your school. Students were able to choose among vegetar-
ian, pepperoni, and cheese. What do you think the bar graph might look like? What scale makes sense
to use and why?

Week of : May 5 - 9 At Whiteoaks, we celebrate safety in our bus lines and on our busses. The following students have been identified as
safe riders today! Congratulations!
Remember your bus line safety rules and good manners: line up in your grade in alphabetical order, toys in your pock-
ets or backpack, whisper with your friend in front or behind you in the line, and calm down for a smooth bus ride.
Remember your bus safety rules: remain seated, face forwards, whisper with your friend, keep the aisle clear.

Author Visit from Michael Wade
Thanks to School Council, our Grade 3-5 students recently enjoyed an entertaining and
inspiring presentation by Michael Wade. He is the co-author of the “And Then it Happened”
series of short stories involving three friends who get into all kinds of mishaps both at home and
at school. The outcome is always funny especially when the adults get caught up in their crazy
schemes!
It‟s not surprising that the library copies of these books have been flying off the shelves in
the last few days. If you happen to notice that your child is reading a book upside down in the
next little while, don‟t worry too much. It„s just another way that Michael Wade has brought a
sense of mischief into reading. Please take a look at www.boysbookshelf.com to read an ex-
cerpt from one of the books, order books on-line and download word games based on the sto-
ries.
Thanks once again to our School Council for supporting literacy at Whiteoaks!

Peel schools honour police officers during Police Appreciation Week
Page 11 Whiteoaks Wednesday Weekly
The Peel District School Board will pay tribute to police officers by holding Police Appreciation Week
from May 4 to 10, 2014. Peel students and staff will show their appreciation for the tremendous job
being done by police to protect schools, homes and communities. Police Appreciation Week coin-
cides with National Police Week. National Police Week pays tribute to the work of police officers
across Canada.
"The Peel board appreciates the dedication and commitment of police officers who work to keep
our schools and communities safe," says Janet McDougald, Peel board chair. "Police Appreciation
Week is our way of thanking officers who dedicate themselves to protecting our community. It's also
a way to give these officers the special recognition they deserve."
During this week, students, staff and parents in schools throughout Brampton, Caledon and Missis-
sauga will honour the work of police officers and thank them for enhancing public safety and secu-
rity .
11 tips for helping children cope with fears, anxieties
Parents can help children learn techniques to manage anxiety. Here are some tips to try:
Reduce stress: Excessive stress and tension in your home can have a negative effect on your child.
Look for ways to reduce stress by doing calm activities together and deal with conflict as it arises,
avoiding raised voices or arguing around children.
Make a routine: A regular routine for meals, homework, quiet time and bedtime can be comforting
to an anxious child.
Be supportive: It is difficult for children to face their fears. Don't laugh at your child or minimize your
child's fears. Let your child know it is normal to have fears and listen to your upset child and let them
know it is okay to talk about feelings. Help your child figure out ways to handle difficult situations. Ask,
"How can we make this easier for you?"
Encourage independence: Although it is tempting to do things for your child when they are anxious
or fearful, it is much more beneficial to help children learn to do things for themselves and take some
risks. By doing this, you will help your child develop the skills and abilities to cope with life. This can in-
clude giving your child responsibilities around the house or brainstorming ideas for solving problems.
Be supportive but don't take over.
Avoid giving excessive help and reassurance: Giving constant help and reassurance can prevent
your child from learning how to cope on his own. Teach your child to answer their own questions and
model problem solving for them.
Build self-confidence: Praise your child for their accomplishments in facing their fears. Involve your
child in activities that help him feel proud.
Have realistic expectations: It is important your child is taking steps forward, even if they are small
steps. Help your child set and achieve goals that can be more easily met, perhaps at a slower pace.
Have realistic expectations for your child.
Take care of yourself too: It can be very difficult dealing with an anxious child. Make sure you man-
age your own reactions and take care of yourself. Remember the basics of eating well, getting
enough rest and give yourself permission to take some time off.
