In Memoriam

Beyond the soul, the most enduring part of man is the memory of him in the minds

of others… Opening a Lodge of Sorrow on July 13, 2015, Brethren of Sul Ross Lodge recognized the loss of eight Brothers who laid down their working tools of life during Masonic Year 2014-2015 and ventured beyond the vail of tears into that undiscovered country from whose borne no traveler returns. We mourn their loss and extend sorrow filled sympathy to their friends and family. Let us remember their service to our fraternity, and remember their families as they grieve the loss of these brothers. May their grief only be temporary and may they be strengthened by the merits of the Lion of the Tribe of Judah.

AT DAWN—THE RISING SUN…

Caleb W. Williams Worshipful Master

As we enter the Holiday Season, and the New Year, I wish all Masons safe travels and good times with friends and family. It is hard to believe, but we are at the halfway mark of the Masonic year and so far, it has been a good one for Sul Ross. We've had successful Blood Drives, an excellent Holiday Banquet, raised several Master Masons, and received the Vanguard Award. I would like to say a special thanks to both of our Wardens. Ryan Hogan, Junior Warden, and David Fuller, Senior Warden, both played important roles in the success of our Holiday Banquet and a good time was had by all. Thanks to Bro. Josh Reinbolt for coordinating the silent auction and we raised over $600 for our scholarship fund. Looking forward, we expect Brethren from the York Rite to present scholarships to some Aggies at the January stated meeting. At some point in January, we will have the annual stuffing party to kick off the Fantastic Teeth Fan Club Program so that the Lodges in the College Station area can present tooth care kits to all 1st graders in College Station ISD. At this time, there are over one thousand 1st graders in CSISD and your help will be most appreciated at the stuffing party and when we go to present the kits to the students. Thanks to Bro. Scott Atkinson as he continues to coordinate this program. At the February stated, we will have our annual Sweetheart Banquet. All Masons and their sweethearts are invited to attend this special event. Though the date has not yet been finalized, we can expect a visit in the spring from R:.W:. Leland Sutton Jr., the new DDGM of Masonic District 29-B. Congratulations Bro. Sutton!

I continue to be excited for the future of Sul Ross Lodge. I believe that there are good things in store for us. As always, I hope to see every Mason attend Lodge, as they are able. If you need assistance getting to and from Lodge, please do not hesitate to contact me, or any brother that you know, and we will make arrangements to get you transportation. If it has been a while since you've attended Lodge, don't let that keep you from coming back. We want you there. Finally Brethren, if there is anything you need, please do not hesitate to contact me at [email protected] or on my cell phone at 979-255-8991. Fraternally, Caleb Williams Master Sul Ross Lodge #1300

AT THE CLOSE OF THE DAY…

David W. Fuller Senior Warden

Winter for Masons in Texas heralds the Annual Grand Lodge Communication and the embarking of a New Grand Master. While largely obscured in our modern conventions, there is a loose relationship between this event and one celebrated early in the practices of ancient free masonry.

Fixed to the movements of the earth, sun, and moon, the determination of time—seasons and weather, is connected to nature instead of an artificially contrived mechanism or table. Though ancient man was certainly unaware of the astronomical cause that brought about the solstice, they observed the effect. The winter solstice, December 21s -23rd on the calendar in the northern hemisphere, brings recognition to the mid-point of winter and remembrance of St. John, the Evangelist.

The winter solstice, December 22nd this year, marks the longest period of darkness and the shortest period of light. From this point in the year, days grow steadily longer and nights shorter. In antiquity, light meant survival. The rising sun threw aside darkness and illuminated shadows. Men could emerge from a nightly sanctuary and venture into the wilderness more

Page 11: Where the Master draws his designs - Sul Ross Lodge 1300sulross.org/Nwsltr/NwsSRL1512.pdf · Soldier, Statesman, Gentleman and Master Mason MAILING ADDRESS Sul Ross Lodge #1300 P.O

confident of survival. Longer days added warmth and ushered an increasing bounty from forest and field.

Within Masonry, light has an elevated significance. God is light; knowledge is light; good is light. Adding to these, for the speculative Mason, light dispels, even conquers evil. It symbolizes a journey from ignorance toward knowledge; the rough and imperfect stone becomes slowly and assuredly better fitted to the builder’s use. It progresses from the rough toward the perfect ashlar.

Reasons for dedicating Masonic lodges to the two Saints John are bantered about; scholarly speculation is rife. My preference views St John, the Evangelist as a man of Light. As the author of one Gospel, three Epistles and the book of Revelations. He sought to dispel ignorance promoting knowledge, as well as embodying charity and faith.

However, it took centuries for the tradition of St. Johns’ Days and Christmas to catch on. For example, it was adopted in Ireland in the 5th century AD; the 7th century in Eastern Mediterranean countries; Austria, England and Switzerland adopted them in the 8th century; and the Slavic countries in the 9th and 10th centuries. St. John the Evangelist teaches us to subdue our passions, one of the first lessons every new Freemason learns in Lodge. When we examine the writings of St. John the Evangelist, we see a major transformation of a young man. He goes from being a hot-tempered young radical to one who exhibits peace in his old age. He goes from being intolerant of others to working with others by sharing his theology of a “better way of life”. Above all things, John was loyal. He was the only Disciple to attend the trial of Jesus as well as being at the foot of the cross for the crucifixion. When he heard about the empty tomb on that eventful Sunday morning, he was the first Disciple to arrive. Moreover, it was he that took Mary, the mother of Jesus, into his home and cared for her until her death. We know from the writings of St. John the Evangelist that his message is simple and straightforward -- that to know and love God is to obey His law, that the essential mark of grace is Brotherly Love, and that the ideal life is to live in fellowship with others.

As a seeker of more light, every Mason in his own manner seeks to better himself, to acquire knowledge and understanding, to practice good and curtail evil, while preparing for an ultimate transcendence.

The practice of selecting new leadership at or near the winter solstice seems to hold some historical relationship with the emergence of more light in all its nuance, whether symbolized by the astronomical solstice or by the life of Saint John, the Evangelist.

AT MERIDIAN HEIGHT…

R. Ryan Hogan Junior Warden

It is hard to believe that 2015 is almost over and 2016 is fast approaching. It feels like only yesterday that I was awarded the opportunity to serve as Junior Warden for Sul Ross Lodge. I have learned so much in so short a time and I know there is much more in store as the new year progresses. As I look back on 2015, I recall many great memories I shared with friends and brethren of the lodge. From welcoming new Entered Apprentices into the Fraternity and watching them progress to Master Masons to enjoying family and friends at Stated Meetings, it has been a great year to serve as Junior Warden of Sul Ross Lodge. One of the events I was proud to be a part of was the joint banquet Sul Ross Lodge hosted with the Sons of the American Revolution to honor and support our local first responders. It was greatly received by all involved and it was a pleasure to have the opportunity to meet and converse with some of the bravest and selfless members of our community. As a new year approaches, I look forward to enjoying many more great memories with the brethren of Sul Ross Lodge and I can’t wait to see what 2016 has in store for us. Fraternally Yours…

BY THE PLUMB Ryan Hogan Junior Warden

On the

Secretary’s Desk

Robert S. Cohen Secretary

Don’t Go Suspended for Non Payment of Dues The title contains a “hint to the wise” which I will repeat more emphatically, “Do Not Go Suspended for Non Payment of Dues”; there are other options. When one becomes a Mason and becomes a member of a Lodge there is the expectation that the member will continue to support the Lodge with dues payments until the member comes forward and states that he is unable or unwilling to continue the dues payments. The reason the statements in the first paragraph are made is that when a Mason becomes suspended for non payment of dues Grand Lodge controls your membership whereas you were otherwise in control. If you feel that you are either unable or unwilling to continue to pay dues, you can remain in control of your membership through a couple of ways, but they require that you have a conversation by email, phone, or in person with the Secretary of the Lodge. One of the options involves a dimit where a Mason becomes a member without a Lodge. A dimit in a Blue Lodge may affect your membership in other affiliated Masonic bodies. To have the best options one needs to have the conversation with the Secretary while still in good standing with the Lodge. Dues are payable in advance for the subsequent calendar year. If you haven’t paid your dues by the last day of the calendar year, you are no longer in good standing. On January 1, if dues are not paid, the Lodge member goes into a category called, “In Arrears.” The Lodge member stays in that category until either dues are paid or just under six

months transpire when the member is automatically transferred to another category, “Suspended for Non Payment of Dues.” One can easily recover from either category by payment of dues for the calendar year. If the Mason does not pay dues during that calendar year, he will fall into another category requiring the payment of dues for the year he went suspended and the current calendar year in order to be reinstated. The reinstatement is automatic, if done prior to being suspended for non payment of dues for three years. After being suspended for non payment of dues for three years a Mason must petition for reinstatement and go through the investigation process. Robert S. Cohen Secretary

A JUST AND UPRIGHT MASON…

When I was first asked if I would like to write a piece for the newsletter, I wasn’t exactly sure what I would write about. I had read some of the newsletters for some brainstorming but I still couldn’t find anything that really just started the ideas. But recently my Mentor and I were having a conversation about what it means to be a Mason and Masonic literature and it got me thinking about what it means to me about being a Mason. So after some thought I found something I would like to write about. Something I’m sure that all of us can relate to or have thought about at some time or another.

When I first started out in Masonry I had my own ideas about what Masonry was, what it meant to be a Mason, and what Masonry was to me. But I’ve found along the way that it has

changed a little for me since I first started out. Originally it was about Making Good Men Better and being a better man. And for me, it still is that to some degree but it also has matured along to way. As I’ve taken the steps from Entered Apprentice, Fellow Craft and finally being raised to the Sublime Degree of Master Mason, I’ve realized that my take on what it means to “Make Good Men Better” has also taken steps. For me starting out, it was a generalized term, meaning that you’re making yourself better. But as I learned the Working Tools and expanded my Knowledge, I noticed that the concept of “Making Good Men Better” became almost a living thing. It expanded and took steps with me through the Degrees and memory work. Instead of it just being a generalized concept, it became something to live by.

What does it mean to “Make Good Men Better”? Does it mean that Masonry makes you a better man? Well, as a fellow Brother told me when I was exploring Petitioning, no, Masonry doesn’t make you a better man. Masonry can’t make you do anything. It is how you take Masonry and apply it to your life. Masonry is a lot of things to different people. To some it is just a Brotherhood, to some a source of Fellowship and good teachings and others a thing to live by. The amazing thing about Masonry is it can be what you want it to be. To me, it is a Brotherhood and something to live by. Brotherhood has always been something I’ve craved and I consider you all my Brothers. To me it is also something to try and live by, applying the Working Tools to help make a Good Man Better.

Masonry doesn’t stop there though. Its’ Knowledge and Light goes as far as you will it to. My Journey inside Masonry has just begun and I have a long way to go. I appreciate the men who have helped me along in my Journey through Masonry and shown me things that I wouldn’t have thought of before. It just goes to show that Masonry can be as deep and Full of Knowledge as you want it to be. Last of all, I appreciate all the Brethren who will continue to show me things and help me in my Journey. I am currently the youngest Master Mason,

figuratively and literally, and look forward to the Fellowship, Brotherhood, and Knowledge that this Grand Fraternity of Ours will offer me for the many years to come.

GIFT OF LIFE BLOOD DRIVES

Brethren, Since 2012, Sul Ross Lodge holds a Gift of Life Blood drive at the Brazos Valley Masonic Library & Museum three times a year. The drives take place in March, July & November. We held out last blood drive on November 30th and had 15 donors donate 22 units of blood to the blood bank. Thank you to everyone who has participated in one of our previous blood drives. It is greatly appreciated. Our brothers at Brazos Union Lodge No. 129 are interested in holding their own Gift of Life Blood drive. However, instead of competing against each other we plan to join forces in 2016 and co-sponsor the blood drives. The plan is to alternate between Bryan (Brazos Union) and College Station (BVMLM) after each drive. We are still working out logistics, but please be on the lookout early 2016 for details on the March blood drive. Fraternal Regards, Joshua W. Reinbolt, PM President, MWSA of Districts 29-A and 29-B

GRAND LODGE ANNUAL COMMUNICATION December 3, 4 & 5, 2015

Waco, Texas

Plant the Seed

Brothers Bob Cohen (Lodge Proxy) and David Fuller (Senior Warden) attended the opening day of the Grand Lodge Annual Communication. They accepted the Vanguard Award presented to Sul Ross Lodge #1300 meeting award standards during the term of Immediate Past Master Justin M. Meyer. The award marks over 7 years that Sul Ross Lodge has attained Vanguard distinction. Among other Sul Ross members who attended were Clyde Collins, Rusty Farquhar, Pete Normand, James Slowey III, and Owen West each serving in other capacities. On the second and third days of the Communication, Brothers Bob Cohen and David Fuller attended and represented the Brethren of Sul Ross Lodge. Grand Lodge Representatives considered five Holdover Resolutions, Seventeen Resolutions and four Grand Master Recommendations. Those fostering the most attention included moving Grand Lodge from December 2016 to January 2017. All resolutions as amended were approved except Holdover Resolution Number 18 (Withdrawn) and Proposed Resolutions Numbers 2, 4, 6, 8, 9 and 13. Proposed Resolutions adopted, but as constitution changes will appear again next Grand Annual Communication for disposition as Holdover Resolutions (Without Further Amendment) were Resolution Number 14 and parts of Grand Masters Recommendation Number 3. Those impacting lodges directly were Proposed Resolutions Numbers 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 10, 16, and 17. A full listing can be found on the Grand Lodge of Texas web site. An electronic voting system introduced for the first time this year greatly improved the speed and accuracy of voting results.

Guests and award recipients, as well as, members of Sul Ross Lodge and Sons of the American Revolution in attendance were impressed with the setting and ceremony and voiced hope of making the event a recurring partnership. The First Responder Dinner from all feedback was well received and greatly appreciated. Every guest and member of SAR and Sul Ross Lodge had good, positive comments. As the focus of all efforts, our guests, the First Responders, were overall pleased with the environment and atmosphere of their reception. The awards ceremony and awards presented by the Sons of the American Revolution are a credit to the SAR and consistent with the ideals of Freemasonry. Sul Ross Lodge may pursue adding a distinctive recognition creating a lodge specific award. One directed toward recognizing “Rookies” has been proposed. Coordination with Chiefs, and Sheriff is expected to identify an appropriate award. A committee will review the proposal.

Inducted by Immediate Past Master Justin M. Meyer

December 12, 2015

David W. Fuller, Jr.

2015 Order of the Evergreen presentation made by Brother Robert C. Cohen on behalf of Immediate Past Master Justin M. Meyer at the Holiday Banquet, December 12, 2015.

The design of the jewel for the Order of the Evergreen was conceived from the armorial crest of the Scottish Rite Clan, Ross. This ancient family records our namesake, Governor Lawrence Sullivan Ross, as a direct descendant and from whom we inherit a great tradition. The name “Ross” is descriptive of a topographic feature and denotes “the brow of the hill.” Original design of the jewel depicts a sprig of evergreen in a hand held aloft. This design is of special Masonic significance. The evergreen is symbolic of the continued long life given the fraternity by the labors of this honored brother. Emblematic of the ancient craft of Freemasonry that, like the evergreen, is a “plant of very deep root.”

Page 41: Where the Master draws his designs - Sul Ross Lodge 1300sulross.org/Nwsltr/NwsSRL1512.pdf · Soldier, Statesman, Gentleman and Master Mason MAILING ADDRESS Sul Ross Lodge #1300 P.O

Our Latin motto around the jewel is “Spem Successus Alit” which means “Success Nourishes Hope.” This is a meaning that is particularly significant in these times of new Masonic success and provides one a rekindled hope for the future of our fraternity.

Unable to attend the Holiday Banquet Immediate Past Master, Brother Justin M. Meyer, requested that Brother Robert S. Cohen, PM and Order of the Evergreen recipient, make the announcement and presentation on his behalf for the 2015 Order of the Evergreen recipient. Brother Cohen read the following announcement for Brother Meyer.

It is my great regret that I am unable to be in attendance tonight to deliver this award to a very worthy and deserving brother. This brother supported me at every turn during my year in the East. I rarely even needed to ask for his assistance as he was already rising to every challenge often before it was even brought to my attention. He is always quick to task, and is easily one of the most organized individuals I have been able to call my friend and brother. He quickly found his way to an officer role within the lodge even with his relatively short time as a member, to which end I am very grateful to have been able to count him among my officer team during this past masonic year. With great privilege it is my honor to name Brother David W. Fuller Jr, PM as this year’s Order of the Evergreen recipient. May he continue to shed light upon our lodge and brethren in the coming years. Reenactment: Stated Meeting December 14, 2015

Fantastic Teeth Fan Club The Fantastic Teeth Fan Club, a program created by Masonic Home and School of Texas (MHS) to help children and parents learn to prevent painful dental problems and avoid expensive treatment, exceeded all expectations. Thousands of children across Texas have received free prevent tooth decay kits. The tremendous success of this program depends on Masonic Lodges launching this service in their community with free kits from MHS. Lodge members assemble the kits and deliver them to participating schools. MHS coordinates with local schools and provides press releases about the project to local news organizations.

• The Fantastic Teeth Fan Club began as a pilot program of Masonic Home and School of Texas (MHS) in the spring of 2010. A key factor to its success is the involvement of Masonic Lodge members. MHS provides 300 free kits per Lodge for first graders in the community.

• Schools are contacted by MHS for approval and scheduling of kit delivery. Masonic Lodge members stuff the kits and deliver them to the school. Some schools also allow Lodge members to host a “How To Have Healthy Teeth” lesson for the children.

• Through the Fantastic Teeth Fan Club, MHS provides these kits, at no charge, to interested Masonic Lodges. Your lodge involvement will be recognized with a Brighter Futures certificate and on the MHS website. Lodges or individual Masons may also be recognized in MHS and Masonic publications.

Brethren, December 19, 2015 The next meeting will be held Wednesday, January 13, at Adam Royder Lodge in Wellborn, Texas. Fellowship and a potluck supper will begin at 6:30 pm with the meeting to follow at 7 pm. The brethren of Adam Royder Lodge have graciously offered their facility for our MWSA meetings again this year and this Lodge is near the geographic center of the two districts so it is an ideal location. At the October meeting, a total of 11 lodges were represented including: Adam Royder No. 778, Bedias No. 651, Brazos Union No. 129, Cedar Creek No. 300, Navasota No. 299, Orphan’s Friend No. 17, Planters No. 147, Washington No. 18, Richard’s No. 1116, St. Alban’s No. 1455 and Sul Ross No. 1300. The following items were discussed during the meeting: 2015 Grand Annual Communication, Richard’s upcoming 100 year celebration on February 6, 2016 and the 2016 outdoor degree sponsored by the 29th District MWSA. Hopefully by now you are aware that your MWSA is again sponsoring a District 29 Master Mason’s outdoor degree on April 30, 2016 hosted by Navasota Lodge No. 299. We want as many Master Mason’s to attend as possible so please provide the details to the members of your lodge. In addition, to help offset costs to the MWSA we are asking all the lodges in the 29th Masonic District to contribute at least $25 or more to this endeavor to ensure the success of the event. We will also accept any individual donations as well. Please send checks made out to the MWSA to Brandon Noto to the address at the top of this letter or bring them with you to the outdoor degree on April 30. You are encouraged to bring aprons and chairs to the outdoor degree as seating will be limited. We will have keepsake paper aprons on hand for a donation of $5. These have the square and compass with the 29th MWSA Masonic District printed on them. If you have an interest in helping out with degree preparations please contact Brother Doug Powell at 979-220-1227 or [email protected]. We will send out a flier with more details in early 2016. Please note that in addition to sitting Worshipful Masters, Wardens, and Secretaries, all Past Masters and Affiliated Past Masters of lodges in District 29 are members of the MWSA. I look forward to seeing each of you at our next meeting as we share in food, fellowship, and masonic education. Should you have any questions or desire further information please do not hesitate to call 97979-255-1253 or email [email protected]. Fraternal regards, Joshua W. The Capture Five stalwart Brothers endured the hazardous journeyed to Adam Royder Lodge #778 on Thursday, October 1, 2015 to enjoy excellent fellowship and join other Brethren for their Stated Meeting. Incidentally, Adam Royder was in possession of the District 29 Traveling Gavel. Conceiving the idea for the visit, Worshipful Brother Josh Reinbolt assisted by Senior Warden David Fuller accepted the surprise gift of the Traveling Gavel from Adam Royder’s Worshipful Master, Michael Reeves. Accept the Traveling Gavel from Worshipful Master Caleb Williams

The Trek Journeying the treacherous, wilderness trail from Richards to College Station, six determined Brothers joined Sul Ross kin for dinner and fellowship. Only incidentally did they remember that their number qualified them to take the "Big Bopper" along with them as they departed. Being a traveler, the gavel impatiently awaits another temporary home. I foresee a little movement around Plantersville, but who knows. These travelers successfully captured the District 29A&B Traveling Gavel. Thank you Brethren for joining with us. Others may feel adventuresome. Just sayin’.

The Steal In spite of alleged attempts to change “the rules,” determined Brothers of Orphan’s Friend Lodge # 17, braved the night [and confusion in the temple] to lay hands on the Traveling Gavel. Richards Brethren graciously passed the Gavel to the marauding craftsmen crew. Rumors are that Orphan’s Friend, orphaned indeed and without a home, is wandering ??? county places unknown, with the truly Traveling Gavel. “Try and catch me, if you can…”

Someone said,

“No one in 29A owns a car?” Could it be true?

LABOR IN THE QUARIES During the Stated Meeting on July 13, 2015, Worshipful Brothers Bob Cohen and Mike Gerst were recognized for years of service to the craft and affiliate and concordant bodies. Worshipful Brother Cohen has served Sul Ross Lodge over seven years as secretary while Worshipful Gerst has served over seven years as Treasurer. Active in Masonry outside

the lodge and contributing in the community, both have assumed leadership roles worthy of our fraternity. As a member of the Heroes of ’76, National Sojourners and Past State President of the Sons of the American Revolution, Worshipful Brother Cohen was presented with a sword and baldric customarily worn with colonial uniforms. During the presentation, the sword was replaced by a pen inserted into the sword scabbard in allusion to “the pen mightier than the sword. As chairman of the Brazos Valley Masonic Museum and Library Board, Worshipful Brother Gerst works tirelessly to oversee the functioning and maintenance of the facility. He coordinated installation of the carpet and checkered pavement among numerous other facility needs. Equally active in supporting the congregation of his church, he assists with maintenance of the church properties. He was presented with a plaque holding a brass representation of the symbolic lodge.

Third Monday Each Month Dinner: 6:30 PM Meeting: 7:30 PM

The Order of The Eastern Star is a Masonic-related fraternity of women and men dedicated to charity, truth and loving kindness. Although not a part of the Masonic fraternity, membership is based on a Masonic affiliation or relationship, a belief in God, and a desire to acquire additional knowledge and for self-improvement. The Order of the Eastern Star was conceived, written and taught by a Master Mason to provide a place where both men and women could work and serve side by side. It is now the largest Fraternal organization in the world to which both men and women belong. The fraternal order is comprised of people with deep religious convictions and spiritual values open to all faiths except no faith. Master Masons in good standing, the wives, mothers, daughters, legally adopted daughters, widows, sisters, half-sisters, step daughters and step-sisters of Master Masons in good standing at the time of death are eligible for membership. Rainbow Girls and Job's Daughters with three or more year’s membership in those youth groups before petitioning are eligible for membership in the OES. The degrees of the Order of the Eastern Star teach lessons of fidelity, constancy, loyalty, faith and love. These degrees are presented in a beautiful ritualistic ceremony designed to not only teach the lessons, but also to provide insight for future study and understanding. In the United States alone, Masonic organizations give $1.5 million a day to charity. Local Eastern Star Chapters select their own charities and places of service in their own communities. Our Bryan Chapter currently supports Ronald McDonald House, Shrine Burn

Hospital, No Kill Animal Shelters, Twin City Missions, and we give 3 Scholarships each year to area High School graduates. Some statewide projects include ESTARL scholarships for ministerial students, other general scholarships for youth, and supporting the Texas Masonic Retirement Center for our aged members. Each year special charities are selected for that year`s emphasis and might include volunteer programs in elementary schools or volunteers in literacy programs and specific community outreach. Eastern Star proudly support young women`s organizations such as Rainbow for Girls and Job`s Daughters. Many Chapters actively support DeMolay for Boys. The Eastern Star is also a social organization with frequent formal events and ceremonies. Being a member is a wonderful and a fulfilling way of life. Please ask an Eastern Star to tell you more about it! The Bryan Chapter of OES meets the Third Monday of the month at Brazos Union Lodge on Main St. in Bryan. Dinner is at 6:30 followed by meeting at 7:30. Everyone is welcome to come for dinner and learn more about Eastern Star in general and what our local chapters are up to. For more information, please call Patricia Salzmann, WM, 979-739-1029 or email us at [email protected].

MASONIC LEGACY

Every Mason knows that his Masonic legacy is his own, personal moral and spiritual growth. With that internal maturing comes an abiding commitment in Faith, Hope and Charity. His acknowledgement of God and influence at home and in his community, state, and country extend his legacy beyond the internal into the world. “These gracious principles are to extend further; every human being has a claim upon your kind offices.”

GILCHRIST HERITAGE SOCIETY

The Gilchrist Heritage Society recognizes individuals who include a gift to the Brazos Valley Masonic Library & Museum Association in their estate plans. Anyone who submits documentation of his estate gift qualifies for membership, no matter what size the gift. The Gilchrist Heritage Society is named for “Gibb” Gilchrist, the first Master of Sul Ross Masonic Lodge No. 1300, Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Texas, and President of Texas A&M University. Gilchrist Heritage Society members are recognized by being included in an Honor Roll published each year, and by having their names permanently displayed on the Gilchrist Heritage Society Plaque in the Brazos Valley Masonic Library & Museum.

THREE STEPS TO MEMBERSHIP Once you decide to make an estate gift to the Brazos Valley Masonic Library & Museum Association, becoming a member of the Gilchrist Heritage Society takes just three simple steps:

1) With the help of your professional advisors, include a gift to the Brazos Valley Masonic Library & Museum Association in your estate plan. This might include a bequest, a living trust, beneficiary designation of a retirement account or life insurance policy. A gift of any size qualifies you for membership.

2) Send the Brazos Valley Masonic Library & Museum Association a copy of your will, trust agreement, retirement account statement, or insurance policy. If you prefer, you may copy just the relevant part of your will or trust agreement or the cover and beneficiary pages of your retirement account or insurance policy. If you and your spouse both seek membership and have a separate will, please submit copies of both documents. This applies also to trust agreements and other documents.

3) Request a membership form, complete the form, and return it to the Association. The details of your gift are confidential, and you are welcome to decline public recognition.

SERVICE STATION Reveille’s No. 1 Convenience Store

300 George Bush Boulevard College Station, Texas 77840

Property acquired by Sul Ross Lodge has provided valuable financial support. A Standing Committee of the lodge has monitored and managed the operation of the service station operated by a long term tenant. This legacy established a steady flow of income for Sul Ross Lodge. Throughout the years of its operation, revenues from the service station have steadily afforded revenues each year for Scholarships, Benevolent and Charitable donations.

Page 67: Where the Master draws his designs - Sul Ross Lodge 1300sulross.org/Nwsltr/NwsSRL1512.pdf · Soldier, Statesman, Gentleman and Master Mason MAILING ADDRESS Sul Ross Lodge #1300 P.O

That regular support for lodge activities may soon be diminished or eliminated. As discussed during lodge business meetings, the State of Texas, Department of Transportation has indicated expansion and redesign of the area at and around the intersection of George Bush Boulevard and Wellborn Road. Current plans would extend George Bush Blvd. and a pedestrian walkway under the Union Pacific Railroad Tracks and Shoofly Tracks. The resulting obstruction created by a retaining wall on George Bush Blvd. and blocking Highland Avenue would render the service station and convenience store isolated from traffic flow and eliminate its access from passing traffic. The Service Station Committee, a Standing Lodge Committee, continues to monitor and explore options as more information becomes available.

GRAND LODGE FORUM & EXAM August 27, 2016

Grand Lodge Forums are conducted by representatives of the Grand Lodge Committee on Works. They are intended to confirm the preferred manner of conducting floor work and delivering the message of the degree. It is a method for standardization, so that where ever in Texas a candidate is initiated, passed and raised, his experience would be the same. Also, the Forum affords an opportunity for Brothers to validate their esoteric memory and receive an A, B, or C Certificate. Bedias Lodge #651, Bedias, will host the Forum and Examination on Saturday, August 27, 2016. Conducted by RW Duane Anthony, the Forum will commence at 9:30 AM with the Examination beginning at 1:00 PM. RW Duane Anthony’s 2016 Schedule for Committee on Works
