Dear Friends,

What an incredible 2015-16! We celebrated 65 years of breathing joy, inspiration, and creativity into schools and reached more students than ever. Thank you for supporting us, whether you included us in your year-end giving, joined us at one of our Impact Breakfasts, or partied with us at Taste the Arts X at The Hippodrome. It was a year I won’t forget! In 1947, Nina Collier attended a chamber concert at the Baltimore Museum of Art and commiserated with a friend because their children could not join them on a school night. Nina asked: Why can’t we bring these musicians into the schools during the day? Nina organized a 20-concert series with three main ingredients that we believe to be the magic recipe that still works:

1. Seek out great artists with a natural ability to inspire and engage students 2. Create an intimacy so there is a real exchange between the artist and students 3. Maintain a commitment to reach children of all backgrounds Nina’s question inspired many. Her music series led to our founding in 1950 and later produced a national movement that now includes a network of 31 independent affi liates.

Asking important questions has fueled our growth and kept us relevant: Why can’t we extend our artists’ reach beyond the auditorium and into the classroom? Why can’t we provide teachers with resources to integrate the arts into academic subjects? Why can’t our artists serve as catalysts for change in our schools?

As you read the Year in Review, we invite you to consider some important questions too: Where do you want to see more students reaching their potential? Where do you want to see vibrant classrooms using the arts to make learning fun?

With your continued support, we will one day reach all Maryland students.

Stacie Sanders Evans Executive Director

Dear Friends,

The cover photo is a topographical map created by the fourth graders of New Market Elementary School (NMES) during a residency with YA artist Pam Negrin. A total of 133 students worked with Pam for eight days, learning about the geography of their home state.

In 2015-16, Young Audiences/Arts for Learning (YA)reached more students with high-quality art programs than ever before. We could not have made this progress without YOU. Thank you!

But we have more work to do. The number of American students who received arts education in childhood has dropped by more than 15% since 1982. Many students today, right here in Maryland, still do not have access to the arts.

Together, we can change this.

reaching their potential?

After Stephanie’s son Moseley attended our Summer Arts & Learning Academy, she noticed a change: he was willing to learnand no longer shut down if faced with a challenge. Her aspiration for the future:

“Give more children the same chance [to attend] and help them see learning is amazing!”

YA served 191,253 students, from Pre-k to grade 12, with our programs, which ranged from interactive assemblies to classroom-based residencies. Because of you, we reached over 8,000 more students than the year before!

YA artists traveled to all 24 Maryland school districts to deliver programs to nearly 500 schools and commu-nity sites, providing students with a total of 224,198 learning hours in, through, and about the arts.

YA raised $585,390 to subsidize programs through our urban and rural Access for All initiatives, reaching 85,940 students who otherwise might not have been able to experience the arts. Because of you, we reached 2,300 more low-income students than the previous year!

YA operated another successful Summer Arts & Learning Academy in Baltimore City. We expanded from one to four sites, providing arts-integrated literacy and math instruction to nearly 800 elementary students who were struggling academically.

our Summer Arts & Learning Academy

Keep scrolling to see the amazing results we achieved last summer!

To address the chronic problem of summer learning loss, YA once again partnered with Baltimore City Public Schools (BCPS) to o er a free, ve-week long Summer Arts & Learning Academy for K-5 students who were behind academically. Students participated in arts-integrated math and literacy lessons, co-taught by teachers and YA teaching artists, and arts enrichment classes, which ranged from improv to songwriting to slam poetry. The result: students enjoyed the program tremendously. But more important, we con rmed this method works! By infusing the arts and making learning joyful, students not only avoid summer learning loss, but, in many cases, make gains.

The results, con rmed in two separate studies, are signi cant because summer learning loss—particularly among students at or below poverty level—is among the most di cult challenges facing the Baltimore school district and other high-poverty schools across the country. An external evaluation of the program revealed that students:

Improved math abilities: 79% of students who attended the majority of the program had a positive change in their math score.

Developed stronger writing skills: On average, students improved their writing skills by 38% in structure and 58% in content.

BCPS conducted its own study. Their results con rmed that students in our program had less of a summer learning slide than their peers. In fact, students who attended a majority of our program gained 1.8 percentage points on math assessments!

“The arts offer an extraordinary opportunity, particularly during the summer, to reignite the joy of learning and to set young people on the right course to start the school year strong. These impressive results from Young Audiences mirror findings of the landmark Wallace Foundation study... “

-Matthew Boulay PhD, National Summer Learning Association

1.8 percentage points on math assessments!

“During the summer, Young Audiences reinforces key math and reading concepts through the arts and creative activities – and we’re pleased with the results we’ve seen. When students participate in summer learning programs that help them move ahead or reduce learning loss, they start the school year off stronger.”

-Dr. Santelises, CEO of Baltimore City Public Schools

Training teachers to use the arts creates long-term change within our school systems. If the 1,096 teachers we formally trained in arts integra-tion just this year brought the arts to their students every year for the next 9 years (the average career length of Maryland teachers), we will impact over 266,000 students.

Imagine the result if we are able to provide increased professional development opportunities throughout Maryland!

As the Maryland Wolf Trap a liate, YA served 56 early learning teachers with 16-session residencies that include embedded professional development, giving them the tools to make their teaching as dynamic and engaging as possible.

“teachers saw that their students were more capable than they imagined.”

Mary Kate, a teacher from Prince George’s County, said that she noticed a shift in teaching as a result of our residency. On day ve,

YA employed 157 artists throughout the year, including four new individual artists and two new ensembles that came to us through our new partnership with the Peabody Institute.

Artists collectively earned $1,254,765 through these employment opportunities and provided more than 7,700 arts experiences for students and teachers across the state.

In partnership with Arts Education in Maryland Schools Alliance and the Maryland State Arts Council, YA trained 18 artists through the Teaching Artist Institute (TAI), Maryland’s only training program dedicated to advance the eld of teaching artistry.
