28 Die in holi IncidentsNew Delhi: Twenty-seven Holi revellers drowned while one person died in a clash as the festival of colours, heralding advent of summer, was celebrated across the country on Wednesday.People applied ‘gulal’ on each oth-er and gorged o sweets and sang and danced to songs and drum beats.

This summer threatens to be es-pecially bad. The Karnataka Elec-tricity Regulatory Commission is set to pronounce its tariff order on Thursday with a hike in electricity rates certain. There was specula-tion on Wednesday that the hike could be between 13 and 25 paise. The Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation Limited (KPTCL) and elec-tricity supply companies (ESCOMS) in the state had sought a 70 paise hike earlier this year citing a revenue gap of Rs 2,200 crore. With hydel power generation hav-ing dropped due to poor water storage, Bangalore city is already facing a pow-ershortage of 300 MW and a water shortage of 500 million litres day. In such a scenario,

many people argued against a power tariff hike during KERC’s public hear-ings. Around 2,600 objections were heard by the commission, including those made by industry bodies like FKCCI and technology companies like Infosys. Even BMRCL and BWS-SB objected to a tariff hike this year. The maximum hike announced by the KERC in the previous years has been 27 paise. However, another bur-den that is looming over electricity consumers is the Fuel Adjustment Costs (FAC), which when notified by KERC will mean that consumers will have to pay for fuel used in elec-tricity generation. The tariff order on Thursday will be the fifth in three years. Domestic users currently pay a minimum of Rs 2.30 per unit.

and waited and we had no idea why the trains were delayed. When we asked the operators, they said there was a technical problem but they themselves didn’t know what exactly was wrong or when the trainwould come,” she said. What annoyed her more was that the Metro personnel would not allow commuters to leave the stations. “I did not even ask for a refund. All I wanted to do was get out of the place so I could go to Indiranagar. But when the tokens were rejected at the exit counters, we asked the operators to open the emergency gates. They refuse to do that,” she alleges. This resulted in more argument with the personnel and more delays. “Eventually one old man just jumped

barricade and left the station That’s when the personnel opene the gates and let us out,” she said.A statement from Bangalore Metro RailCorporation Ltd (BMRCL) said thatit was because of a technical snag” at the MG Road station that both lines could not be operated from 12:47pm. However, single line operattions were run on the down Bayappana halli to MG Road from 1.17pm -Normalc was estored around 2.10 pm, the statement s aid, adding that trips were affected and 63 commuters were given a refund on demand.

Former millitary ruler Pervez Musharraf on Wednesday said he was ‘‘proud of the kargil operation’’ , during which, Pakistani troops had crossed the line of control and occupied positions on the indian side in 1999.

Shankaran is one of the prime accused in the 2006 Navy War room leak case. Many secret doc-uments were allegedly stolen from Directorate of Naval operations in New Delhi, also known as the Navy War room.

NewDelhi:ALondon court has approved the ex-tradition of Navy war room leak -case accused Ravi Shankaran, Cen-tral Bureau of Investigation (CBI) sources said on Wednesday. The CBI got the Interpol to issue a red corner notice against him in July, 2006. Shankaran (46) is a retired naval commander and a relative of former Navy chief admiral Arun Prakash.A CBI spokesperson in Delhi said that the matter wouldnow be re-ferred to the Britain’s Secratary of State for further orders.“Once Shan-karan is extradited, it will strengthen the CBI investigation in the case,” he added. District judge Nicholas Evans at Westminster Magistrates Court in London ruled that a “case to answer” has been made out against the accused and his verdict can now be sent to the UK Home Secretary Theresa May who will make a final decision of issuing an extradition order, agencies said.Shankaran has been remanded in conditional bail, which includes requirement to live at a new address in theUnited Kingdom that he submitted to the court on Wednesday along with a deposit of 20,000 pounds.Though he managed to get bail, Shankaran cannot travel abroad, agencies re-ported.“The court is concerned with English rules of law and evidence that may be in admissible in India is not a consideration. No new evidence has been presented that deals a knock-out blow to the prima facie case to answer,” Judge Evans said in
