4 What’s Up
Ukraine Keeper Banned for Two YearsUkraine’s international keeper Oleksandr Rybka has received a two-year ban from UEFA after failing a drugs test. With only a few months to go before the country hosts the EURO 2012 football championships, that’s a bit of a blow to the home side. The 24-year-old Rybka tested positive for a banned substance after a No-vember league match when his club team, Shakhtar Donetsk, played against FC Karpaty. He’s now ruled out of taking part in EURO 2012 pend-ing an appeal.Shakhtar Donetsk, however, claim Rybka, who was immediately suspend-ed while UEFA considered the punishment, had innocently taken weight-loss pills, though admitted he’d failed to consult club doctors. “From FC Shakhtar’s point of view, this is an extremely severe verdict, which isn’t quite proportional to the footballer’s offence,” the club said in a statement. The club intends to lodge an appeal, and as its owner just happens to be Ukraine’s richest man, Rinat Akhmetov, who just happens to own one of the hosting stadiums, we’re pretty sure the appeal will fall in favour of the keeper.
Ukraine in Davos – How Embarrassing!Ukraine’s international reputation must have hit an all time low last week when its two political representatives abroad, Yanukovych and FEMEN, hu-miliated the whole nation at the International Economic Forum in Davos.First Yanukovych told the world that the future of the country lies in Euro-pean integration. Well duh, tell us all something we don’t know. He also said that EU membership is crucial for democracy, economic prosperity, per-sonal freedoms and the well-being of every citizen of Ukraine. Again, duh! But we wonder at the irony of these words passing the lips of our numbskull president when he shows blatant disregard for all of them. He continued by saying that 2011 had been a fruitful year when it came to the European integration of Ukraine, citing the completion of negotia-tions on the new association agreement. He failed, however, to mention he’d screwed the whole thing up by throwing his opposition in jail.Luckily, one bright spark had the sense to ask about whether or not Tymosh-enko might be released soon so that the pathway to Ukraine’s EU integration might be smoothed. To which the president replied, no. Instead he said she de-served to be there because the gas contract she signed is the biggest problem facing the country today. And yet again we have to highlight that the leader of this great country and Azarov signed another one when they came to power! His reason for being in Davos last week, was, apparently, to attract foreign investment to Ukraine, an idea that had almost all international leaders falling about laughing. “Ukraine?” they were heard to say. “Who’d invest in Ukraine while he’s running the place?”This great nation hung its head in shame, thinking it had hit bottom and things couldn’t possibly get any worse. But then Ukraine’s other great statesmen (or is that “statespeople”), FEMEN, burst onto the scene, run-ning topless through the town, screaming like banshees and generally scaring the bejesus out of the local law enforcement community. (Search FEMEN Davos on youtube and watch as one poor Swiss policeman flinches in fear as an insane topless blond woman savages him.)Yes, Ukraine – a country of highly educated, intellectual and cultured people – has these two as its international advertisement. That’s embarrassing.
Iron YuliaJournalists in Russia recently unveiled a documentary about Yulia Tymoshenko, portraying her in various roles such as country hostess, princess, sexy business lady and persuasive player. She is depicted as a compelling woman who will be exalted whether she’s released or not. One of the most interesting parts of the film includes an interview with her lawyer, Serhiy Vlasenko, who claims there are those in the prison
system out to kill her. Allegedly, they've already given her an injection of gamma hydroxybutyric acid, after which she fainted. Banned in Eu-rope, the substance is considered far more dangerous than propofol, the drug that killed Michael Jackson. The documentary ends on a rather ludicrous note, characterising Yulia as one woman against a country: “The whole life story of Yulia Tymoshenko has been a battle – against poverty, business competitors and a struggle for pow-er." While jailed unfairly, how quickly people forget the reality of the situation.
Shelters for the Homeless? The cold is driving the city indoors, where people are burying themselves in blankets while sipping on hot tea. Unfortunately, there are those without homes to head to, many of whom have been severely suffering from the winter’s icy temperatures. There is no need for concern, however, as the Kyiv City Admin-istration has got their back!Demonstrating acts of kindness and gener-osity, city authorities (as they sit in heated offices) have stated that all the homeless people will soon be transported to the Centre
for Social Adaptation. While the building can only accommodate up to 300 people, our city superheroes promise to give shelter to all in need. How exactly they’re going to accomplish that we’re not sure. In addition, they’ll be undertaking construc-tion of ‘warm-up points’ around the city, where anyone in need can come and warm up with a hot drink and sandwich. They will also be providing hot suppers for only 7hrv each. But then again, when one is homeless, and typi-cally without a job, money is hard to come by. While it sounds like a very worthwhile project in principle, Ukraine and its authorities aren’t always so good at putting things into practise. Let’s hope this is one for the record books.

Poisoned Apples Bad news for all the lovers of fresh produce out there: over half of vendors here in Kyiv have been selling spoilt goods! Throughout the last year, more than 2,000 trade points were checked, where research revealed that buying fruit and vegetables in the street, at the mar-ket, even in the shop, could be just as harmful to your health as going out to the forest and gnawing on poisoned apples from old women disguised as evil queens! It’s true, products long-since expired with terms of use stickers plastered to their skins are being sold in all their rotten beauty for their usual price, while mouldy sausage has found its way into salads masking the de-cay. We don’t want to scare you completely. What we will say, however, is that you should be aware of what you’re buying and from whom. There are sly sellers all over the city ready to take your money in exchange for expired produce.Experts suggest you start saving all of your bills so that should you find yourself in the unfortunate position with a whole lot of rotten food on your hands, you may take it up with your local food control agency with your com-plaints. Now, to find those control agencies…

8 February 1116Kyiv ruler Volodymyr Monomach compiles all of his wisdom in the book, Edification to Children. Advising his offspring on how to rule the country, overcome enemies and remain noble and generous, this is the first autobiographical text in the history of Ukraine.
7 February 1483Ukrainian scientist and President of Bolo-gna University, Yuriy Drohobych, publishes his book A Prognostic Look At the Year 1483. Acting as an astrological calendar, it shows the link between the positions of planets and stars with world political and world events. There are only two copies available today.
9 February 1648 Prominent Ukrainian leader Bohdan Khmel-nitsky is chosen hetman of the Zaporozhian Sich. Supported by the Cossacks, Khmel-nitsky starts a national war against the Pol-ish magnates. The Ukrainian nation comes together, which results in the creation of a Cossack state.
4 February 1945The Yalta Conference commences and con-tinues until 11 February. Presidents Frank-lin, Roosevelt, Winston Churchill and Gen-eral Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, Joseph Stalin, meet to discuss the details of Europe post-war. One of the key agreements is to split Germany into four occupied zones.
6 February 1957The Ukrainian Association of Cinematog-raphers is established. There are at least 500 initial members of the organisation, of which honoured artist of the Soviet Union, Taras Levchuk, is the head.
This Week in History
Another Toy for the President? The decorations have been put away, the tree has been tossed and we are all walking about with a few extra pounds, but that hasn’t stopped our dear president from continuing to receive gifts. Ukrainian taxpayers (read: each and every one of us) have generously funded a plane for Mr Yanukovych. It is in part thanks to Vice Prime Minster Serhiy Tihipko who says a president simply isn’t a president without his own residence and a plane to boot! So fel-low Ukrainians, let us fork out just a few more kopecks. We simply wouldn’t want to humili-ate ourselves by depriving our president of palaces, cars and now planes.
Tax on ReligionThe Ukrainian Lavra has become a profitable business as of late, raising the prices of their traditional Ukrainian rituals to ridiculous rates. Quoting the rise in cost as standard practise when compared to the inflation al-most every other sphere in the country is fac-ing, they say they are justified. Babies born this year are going to cost 750hrv to christen, while anyone thinking a nice spring wedding might be just the thing might well think twice when they find out the price is an incredible 10,000hrv! Those wanting to simply use the church as a stop-ping point will also be charged. Yes that’s right, to use this particular place of worship as a backdrop for pictures, the price tag is a ridiculous 100hrv. Seems cheaper to pray at home these days.
Ballet Boy Storms OutUkrainian-born principal dancer with the prestigious British Royal Ballet, Serhiy Po-lunin, has recently walked out amid a flurry of bizarre tweets. The tweets, such as "Who wants to live forever anyway??? ReallyJ", a picture of him in an untidy flat with a beer in his hand and a request for heroin have given cause for concern about his state of mind. Polunin joined the Royal Ballet at the age of 13 and was showered with awards and accolades, before becoming their youngest ever Principal in 2010. Of late, his behaviour has become rather erratic. He has been adding tattoos to his body at an increasing rate and even invest-ed in a tattoo parlour in north London. A career as a tattoo artist is one he has pro-posed, with some concerned that, with the world at his feet, he is struggling to cope with the pressures of such fame. Others, however, suspect the reason behind his departure may be the desire to pursue more lucrative danc-ing ventures in Japan and the United States – something his contract with the Royal Bal-let had precluded. Either way, his Twitter account, profile of which now reads “Sergei Polunin: Principal Dancer of ?” makes for compelling reading!

it was more a club/cabaret. Staging risky, avant-garde productions with girls less than fully dressed, it gathered clientele on a very regular basis, keeping the nightlife of Paris well entertained. A wave of modernism hit France in the late 50s and 60s, positively influencing the cre-ativity of the club. Reflecting the stream of the changes the rest of the artistic world was facing at the time. its montages became more stylish and chic. The world was starving for some new novelty. Alain Bernardin recognised it. He ensured anyone coming in to Le Crazy Horse was in for a tasty treat. Cooked up by a highly professional team out to astonish, creative choreography, unbelievable lighting effects and music designed to excite the audi-ence was what they got. Forty years later, at the beginning of the twen-tieth century, Le Crazy Horse left Paris for the Americas. Journeying into Native American country, the troupe must have felt like they were heading toward the motherland. American au-diences greeted the cabaret like a band of broth-ers, or sisters in this case. The group had be-come a recognised name internationally. It was one of the best gifts for their 50th anniversary. Seven years ago, the cabaret came under new management. Andre'e Deissenberg is the new Managing Director. Cabaret for her is a life-style, and he says it must include innovative thinking. While older shows may have focused on details of the past, Deissenberg and her team, have taken the puzzle, wiped off the dust, and given the show a new gleam.
Inspiration in All Shapes and SizesToday, Andre'e Deissenberg believes Le Crazy Horse is exceptional. Since its inception, it has been dedicated to celebrating ‘La Femme’, which it continues to do in new and unexpect-ed ways. Far removed from other cabarets, Le Crazy Horse has not shied away from change, which is what, he believes, makes them differ-ent. Creating shows by incorporating all of the newest advances in technology, the best of the art world and all its developments are things they continually strive to achieve.
A legendary cabaret and a Native American war hero. The connec-tion seems tenuous. They do share a couple of things, however. One
being the name Crazy Horse, the other being audacity. As the chief of a Sioux tribe in pres-ent-day Nebraska, Crazy Horse took up armies against the federal government in 1876. He is honoured in his homeland in numerous ways, one of which includes a monument carved into a mountain. Europeans revere him in a different way.
Rearing the HorseIt was 1951 when Alain Bernardin opened the Crazy Horse Saloon. Not quite a museum paying tribute to the great chief of the past,

The Seduction of Le Crazy HorseRays of light flood the stage. The music starts. The scene envelopes the audience and voices hush. At the drop of a hat, quite literally, they appear. Seductive, graceful and smooth. The girls of Le Crazy Horse cabaret move in easy and fluid movements. Those watching catch their breath.

No Evidence of a CrimeThe day after Tymoshenko was jailed, Amnesty International in Ukraine held a press conference. There were lots of journalists there, which pleased Tanya, one of two full-time staff members here. Despite the presumed link, Amnesty weren’t there to talk about Tymoshenko, or any other political prisoners for that matter. They were there to talk about torture and police impunity in Ukraine – their new cause. What’s On met them to ask what they’ve been doing and what they plan to do now.
12 Ukraine TodayStephen Oryszczuk
As I walk into the café, I call Tanya to ask where/who she is. She directs me to the area where she’s sitting. I can’t see her. Eventually, a hand
comes up and we meet. She’s a sweet little thing, quiet and clearly intelligent. She’s also over the moon. Amnesty International has made a lot of changes recently with regards to how it works in Ukraine. For the first time in four years, she feels filled with hope that they can now start to be effective.
Analysis ParalysisAmnesty International has over three million supporters worldwide, so I ask why it only has 200 members in Ukraine. Tanya says it’s partly because they used to charge
a membership fee, and the doing away with this was one of the many changes introduced last October. There is now no fee required to support Amnesty. They only ask that sup-porters take part in one action every year, such as signing a petition. It’s not just supporters that they’ve been missing. Tanya is one of only two staff mem-bers. But the budget was recently beefed up as well, meaning there will now be up to five paid positions in the team, as well as money to spend on the publicity materials they need. Similarly, there had previously been very few volunteers. But Tanya explains that the new model envisages a lot more. The first batch have already been recruited and trained, and they’re on the lookout for good people to join the team.Having established that a lack of people has hindered progress, I suggest that that’s not the full story. As part of my background re-search, I learnt that the organisation was well-known as having been riddled with poli-tics and in-fighting for the past few years, which essentially paralysed it. I put this to Tanya. True, she admits, but hopefully a problem of the past. Another change last October was the abolition of the Board of Members, an organisational and decision-making body that neither organised nor made decisions. This all helps to explain why Amnesty in Ukraine has done very little thus far. To quan-tify that statement, their last big campaign was for the abolition of the death penalty in the country, which was removed in 1989.
Thinking About Doing SomethingStill, with new changes comes a new dawn. Their new headline campaign is ‘torture and police impunity in Ukraine’. Tanya gives me lots of examples, and it does indeed seem to be an enormous problem here. It seems com-mon knowledge that some members of the police engage in torture and extortion, so fre-quently in fact that it can seem endemic. Ad-ditionally, it appears that both the judiciary and the authorities turn a blind eye. You get the impression they’d rather drink a litre of the ammonium carbonate some prisoners are allegedly forced to drink than actually investigate the reports or prosecute the per-petrators. What is Amnesty doing to highlight the prob-lem? Tanya tells me that they’ve held a press conference, produced booklets, presented to students and held meetings with the Min-
ister of the Interior, who “has not ignored these concerns entirely.” Have they met with the police? “No, it’s more high-level than that.” Have they papered Kyiv with posters highlighting the problem? “No, but we’re thinking of producing some.”

A Marvellous Mixture of MusicDark Patrick, House of Artists (Artema 1-5)19 February at 18.00This duo creates an out-of this-world cocktail of music that has got people talking in many parts of the world. The Ukrainian Eva and British Paul produce a spe-cial mix of folk, rock and elec-tronic, the sound of which is often compared to The Doors, Dead Can Dance and Deacon Blue. And yet, they are unique. Playing the hurdy-gurdy, the ancient bandu-ra, the Irish bagpipe and flute, the bodhrán and harmonica, Dark Patrick is an entire orchestra in just two people! Tickets are 150 – 220hrv. For more information call 272-0547.
A Smile of Sincerity Jamala (pop, jazz), October Palace (Instytutska 1)29 March at 19.30The last time we published any-thing about Jamala she was about to head off on tour. To-gether with her jazz band, they swarmed the country with her most recent album For Every
Heart, featuring one of her best songs yet, Smile. A year later, she’s back in Kyiv wrapping up that tour with a concert at Octo-ber Palace. If you missed her the first time round, get your tickets today. Aside from her powerful voice and her four-octave range, one of her best attributes is her ability to make people smile. Tickets are 50 – 1000hrv. For more information call 279-1582.
Smooth SaxKenny G (US, jazz), October Palace (Instytutska 1)12 March at 19.00American saxophonist Kenny G should be proud. Not just for be-ing among the 25 best musicians of all time and nation, according to RIAA. But also for those gor-geous locks! Over the 30 years he’s been around, he’s played to countless, winning many awards, such as a Grammy, for best in-strumental composition. While there are those who cannot see past the bland elevator-music instrumentalist he’s been stereo-typed as, perhaps they’ve not giv-en the man, his soprano sax and their 17-albums an honest shot. Admission is 290 – 2390hrv. For more information call 279-1582.

Based on an ancient parable from the East, Tsarina Mehmene-bany sacrifices her beauty to save the life of her dying sister. But this is only the beginning. With cho-reography that is both expansive and expressive, find out how leg-ends of love can quickly turn into something else.Tickets are 20 – 200hrv. For more information call 279-1169.

Urban Sculptures Exhibition of sculptures by Anish Kapoor, PinchukArtCentre (Baseina 1/3-2)From 28 April Famous Indian/British artist An-ish Kapoor, laureate of The Turner Prize and one of 13 members of the New British Sculpture group, is bringing his works to Kyiv this spring. Anish’s sculptures are monochromic state-of-the-art pieces, brightly coloured and fea-ture curves that create a feeling of softness even in the most solid object. As an innovator who intro-duced urban materials like con-crete and steel to sculpture, a big part of his popularity came when he joined up with the New Brit-ish Sculpture group in the 80s. Now Kapoor’s works decorate the streets of Nottingham, Chicago, New York and others. For more information call 590-0858.
The Apocalypse is ComingPirate Station Apocalypse International Exhibition Centre (Brovarsky Pr 15)25 February at 20.00The ancient prophesy of the Maya states there were four suns, or four great eras before us. One after another they were wiped out. The epoch of the fifth sun is called The Movement: Movement of the People, the Planets and the Stars. But this era is coming to an end. The world as we know it is destined to disappear. We know the exact time. But what should we expect? An end? Or a begin-ning? It is with this premise Pi-rate Station comes to Kyiv for the fourth and maybe the last time. Bringing drum’n’bass at its best, gymnasts, acrobats, jugglers and dancers along with top acts Im-mortal, Network and Teatro will leave you singed. Tickets are 199 – 349hrv. Getting a call to work with Enigma in 1998, he’s been with them ever since. While he has continued to work on his own albums (the sixth and most recent called Trouble In Paradise released just last year), leading Enigma to record sales into the tens of millions has been his true claim to fame. Warm Up Ukrainian-style
ent. There is something in this part of the world called sivorotka. It can be translated as whey, and essentially adds a slightly tart taste to the overall concoction – something our chef today swears by. You’ll have a hard time finding it in shops and will have more luck approaching a babushka at the market. Or, you can make your own variant by sim-ply adding 15ml of vinegar and a few drops of lemon juice.
Add contents of frying pan to saucepan and let simmer 10 minutes. Shred the cabbage and add to the pot. Tetya Lyuda says doing things in this order
will guarantee that all vegetables will be cooked through but not overdone.
Add the beans. Continue to simmer another 15 minutes. Meanwhile, crush the garlic with a press and stir into the pot. Add peppercorns, salt, pepper and bay leaves. Remove from
heat. Let borsch absorb all the flavours. Chop parsley coarsely. Save a sprinkle as decora-tion, and add the rest to pot. Ladle borsch into bowls. Top with a dollop of sour cream. Serve while hot.Traditional Ukrainian borsch is a fairly easy customary recipe once you’ve got a good recipe and technique. If you were to have borsch in the home of a true Ukrainian family, or order it in
a restaurant, it would most certainly be served with pampushky – bread puffs with garlic. But that’s a recipe for our next Kyiv Kitchens expe-rience. There is a saying in this country that follows the line ‘a good hostess is only as good as her borsch’. With help from Tetya Lyuda, your rankings will no doubt be catapulted into culi-nary stardom!

The evening was MC’d by the great Ihor Posipaiko, while Para Normalnykh got everyone up dancing. Take Me Out!
L ocated on Horkoho, Shlyapa is easy to find. Passers-by peer into the illuminated black and white interior, possibly ex-pecting to find some sort of Wonderland with the March Hare in all his glory placing china on the tables and the Mad Hat-
ter pouring tea. Greeted by the hostess, we are led into the main hall and any link to the famous novel vanishes,
A Matter of TasteShlyapa has three halls designed for banquets, karaoke/common meetings and dining respectively. In the main area, a few couples bill and coo quietly while sipping cocktails and smoking slims. On the way to our table, we pass a huge star and heartbreaker on the music scene here in Ukraine concealed in the corner. My friend devours him with her eyes. I stick to the interior of the restaurant. At first glance, everything here has a posh sort of glow to it. White leather sofas are pushed up to black lacquered tables, while black ceil-ings combine with white walls. Abstract pictures and paintings or mu-sicians are aplenty, and include phrases like “The great guitar player during the Great Depression”, or “What is blues, man?”. In contrast to this courtly black and white theme, odd photos of exotic islands in vivid colours hang on the opposite wall. This strange assortment strikes me
immediately. In keeping with the musical vernacular I find myself ask-ing no one in particular, “What is taste, man?” Our server appears just in the nick of time. I decide to focus my attention on the menu rather than nag him with design questions he probably can’t answer. There are all sorts of cold and hot starters, beginning with the rec-ognisable Ukrainian salo (50hrv) and deruny (potato pancakes) with sour cream and mushroom sauce (45hrv). There is also foie gras served with strawberry sauce (99hrv) and veal liver with caramelised apples (99hrv). I examine the room again, and realise that the mish-mash interior plays in well with the diversity found in the menu. Latin American, European, Asian and Australian dishes are all blended into one, and I have to say the gastronomic variety is impressive. Still, we decide to stick to items more familiar to us and pick out a few Eu-ropean salads.Caesar is my friend’s best bet while the Norwegian Salmon is mine. In addition, our gallant server strongly recommends that we try the stuffed mussels. While waiting for our artsy starters, we order some drinks. I am pleasantly surprised by the list of smoothies for the rea-sonable price of 30hrv each. My choice is Sweet Devil with bilberry, orange, honey and mint. As soon as it arrives, I realise there is noth-ing devilish about it, only one deliciously blissful taste. My friend has chosen something called Millionaire Coffee, and admits it does have a wealthy millionaire aftertaste.
On Recommendation Impressed by our drinks and an amuse-bouche from the chef, we assume our starters will support this first impression. Sadly, as soon as the salads arrive, I feel slightly disillusioned. My Norwegian Salad is cut into huge bits of cucumbers and salmon and tastes greasy. My friend’s Caesar looks en-tirely unappetising. Eager to be impressed, our hopes have been dashed. What’s the advice the Mad Hatter would give Alice in this case? Continue

Marching one frosty evening to art-restaurant Schlyapa (hat in English), all we really want is to take shelter and warm ourselves somewhere, anywhere! Luckily, we arrive sooner than we think, and our own hats come off in gratitude for the warmth.

Face of KyivA fantastic evening for the What’s On Face of Kyiv 2011 final with the beautiful Kse-nia Chernova coming out on top. Watch out for her cover soon!
Being Francis Mathew
16,000 beautiful Ukrainian girls fighting for your affections on Ukraine’s version of The Bachelor. Leave a few for the rest of us, please!
Honesty in eastern Ukraine
My friend accidentally left his bag in a Puzata Xata in a city in the east of Ukraine. We re-turned an hour later to find it right where we left it. Time to emulate your eastern country-men Kyiv-ites!!
Visiting Your Native Land
I went to an unspecified city in the east of Ukraine for the week-end and there really wasn’t that much to see. Next up will be Odesa though so maybe things will turn around!
Sleeper Car Attendants
My friend JD once travelled on a sleeper car where the guard kept telling him he was ‘both-ering her’. We were awoken last weekend by a sleeper guard telling us simply to ‘get out’. What price ‘good morning’?
ResigningWhat is it with Ukrainians re-signing at the moment? First, Royal Ballet star Serhiy Pol-unin strops out, then Finance Minister Fedir Yaroshenko quits. Come on Ukrainians – stick with it!
Hold the door open for someone in Kyiv and what do you get in re-turn? Apart from a Soviet scowl, as is often the case, do you get
a ‘spasibo’ or a ‘djakuju’? In my experience as a semi-frequent door holder (it really de-pends on the attractiveness or frailness of the person behind) it’s about 70% ‘spasibo. So is that bad, that 20 years on from inde-pendence, most people, at least in Kyiv and the east, are still speaking Russian? I’ve been lucky enough to make some friends from the Ukrainian-speaking west of the country, and it’s interesting going for coffee with them. When the waitress says ‘spasibo’, as she usu-ally does, they invariably betray a little vexa-tion. I can almost hear the sentiment, even if not voiced, “we’re in Ukraine, you should speak Ukrainian.” It’s certainly a logical ar-gument. In England they speak English, France – French, Germany – German, US – English, Australia – English. Here the argu-ment that you need a separate language to represent a culture starts to ring a bit hollow. For those who say that Americans have Amer-ican English – drop a couple of ‘u’s here and there, replace pavement with sidewalk and
trousers with pants and congratulations! You have just mastered the difference in tongues. So then let’s come to the basic tenet of lan-guage, to communicate and to do so with as many people as possible. Things were a bit complicated until about 20 or 30 years ago. If your first language wasn’t English and you were going for a second, which do you go for? French for the je ne sais quoi? Spanish, be-cause apparently Spanish speakers will rule the world one day (they’ve got as far as foot-ball)? German, as it’s a captain of industry? Or English – the language of the Beatles and certainly a market leader but by no means a monopoly? Then something happened, every-one just started speaking English, this was pre-Internet, it was the 80s, globalism start-ing to spread its wings, Michael Jackson, Madonna, Tom Cruise even. Then, well, the Internet and that just helped English make the big push for domination – reports on how much of the Internet is in English vary from 80-90%. Put that to the 90% of European children who learn English as a second lan-guage – in second place, French with 32%. Sacre bleu! Some like to point out that in the future, because of its rise to prominence, we’ll all be learning Chinese. You think? What helps you learn a language – songs, films, cul-ture. Ever even heard a Chinese song? There are some great bands singing in Ukrainian – Okean Elzy, Lama, but far more in Russian. Add this to the weight of their cinema and culture and the 250+ million you can speak Russian to (including, whether they admit it or not, everyone in Ukraine) compared to 40 odd million in Ukrainian. So, no denying the melodic charm of Ukrainian but my vote is for ‘spasibo’ every time.
Dear Graham,I moved to Kyiv from Miami a couple of months ago. People say that the best way to recover from de-pression is to change your lifestyle, which is what brought me here. I was expecting a new lease of life by starting up a new business here in Ukraine, dating beauitful women and leading a carefree lifestyle. Alas, my expectations have not been realised. I just can’t adapt to life in Kyiv. I find the people here not as carefree as I had expected – all I hear is moaning – and I am spiralling downward into an-other cycle of depression. Are there any sources of optimism in Kyiv? – John (age witheld)
Dear John, Thanks for your letter. Didn’t I see you in Lucky Pub the other week? Were you the guy with the rolled-up sleeves and salmon pink jacket? Were you the one accosting every young lady who approached the bar with the line, “Hey, ever see Miami Vice? I doubled for Don Johnson in Series 3: The Good Collar. Can I buy you a drink up to the value of 50hrv?” Well for starters John, I’ve checked imdb.com – you are nowhere to be seen in the listings. And second, if you offer a lady a drink you cannot place a price limit on it. Just breathe deeply and realise that if she hits you too hard in the wallet, she’s probably Fruit of the Poison Tree. That’s an episode of Miami Vice by the way. And you weren’t in that either!Best, Graham
