and faculty in decision making; and examples where we are now working smarter). A copy of Dr. Roy’s

Institutional Effectiveness

Jacksonville State University 2016 Fact Book now available

The 2016 Fact Book is intended as a general source of information about the University and an

authoritative reference to quantifiable data about students, faculty and staff, and financial and physical

resources. It provides a wealth of information about our University. In addition to the general

information there is data on our students, faculty, staff, and services. In all, the Fact Book offers a

comprehensive picture of JSU through various lenses.

The Fact Book is available for view or download and your suggestions for improving subsequent

editions are welcome as a Fact Book should be a relevant, functional, dynamic tool.

Dr. Roy would like to commend Kim Presson for her diligence in producing an excellent JSU Fact

Book for the campus community.

If you are in a leadership position in any area of the university (i.e. Division, Academic or Administrative

Department, Academic Center, Service area, etc.) you must have an operational and assessment plan

in order for JSU to be in compliance with SACSCOC accreditation requirements relating to Institutional

Effectiveness.

Friday, November 4th to register for a training session.

University Police Department

Calhoun County 911 Partnership

Jacksonville State University is committed to improving all aspects of preparing for, responding to, and

recovering from natural and man-made emergencies. As none of the buildings on campus have an

address (all listed as 700 Pelham road North), UPD and Calhoun County 911 are finalizing GPS

coordinates for all buildings on campus as well as recording streets and landmarks. This will enhance

emergency response (EMT, Police, Fire) to a particular building in the case of a medical emergency or

an unfortunate situation, thereby increasing the response time and decreasing our potential liability.

Calhoun County 911 has proposed to assume emergency communications for the University Police

Department effective January 1, 2017. Calhoun County 911 has been advocating for centralizing all

police and fire communications in Calhoun County to improve the efficiency of emergency response. As

we move forward, we are gathering information to ascertain unforeseen challenges in software,

personnel, contract, etc.

Address assignment for each building on campus will be finalized shortly and new signs posted at

each. It is important to keep in mind that these addresses cannot be used to receive mail.

The Jacksonville City Post Office will not deliver to these addresses. Mail must continue to show the

address of 700 Pelham Rd. N Jacksonville, AL 36265 so it will reach the JSU mail center to be

delivered. Questions should be directed to Chief Giddy @ [email protected].

“Chill with the Cops”

Pictured are Chief Giddy and SGA President Jesslan Sharp, serving ice cream to faculty, staff and

students at the October 3rd Ice Cream Social.

President John & Dr. Pamela Beehler are partnering with the SGA in the university's continued effort to

strengthen the relationship between students and campus police. Keep your eye out for future events!

A FEMA facilitated Virtual Tabletop Exercise (VTTX) - “Active Shooter - College Campus with

Hostages” has been scheduled for December 8, 2016 from 10am till 2pm at the Calhoun County

Emergency Management Agency. This training exercise has been requested especially for JSU and

Gadsden State Community College. This VTTX will simulate an active shooter event in a

college/university environment and can be used to assess plans, policies, training, and procedures. The

VTTX differs from other tabletop exercises because it uses Video-Teleconference (VCT) technology

and it provides an opportunity for responders across the Nation to simultaneously participate in a

hazard-specific facilitated discussion.

For more information, contact Melonie Carmichael at [email protected] or 256-782-5282 if you’d like

to participate.

The National Incident Management System (NIMS) is an incident management framework

established by the Federal Department of Homeland Security Presidential Directive (HSPD-5) in 2004.

Under NIMS all local, state, and federal first responder agencies and departments tasked with incident

management responsibilities must utilize the Incident Command System (ICS) and other NIMS

principles when responding to a variety of incident that may occur within their jurisdictions. JSU must

demonstrate NIMS compliance efforts in order to apply for specific emergency preparedness and

Homeland Security grants and to receive federal disaster reimbursement funding. JSU adopted a NIMS

policy on November 1, 2007 as its system for preparing and responding to disasters and emergency

incidents. JSU Police Department manages the University’s NIMS compliance efforts, which includes

identifying faculty and staff who should take ICS courses, please review the plan and determine which

ICS’s courses you should take based on your department/division once completed email a copy of your

certificate to Melonie at UPD.

To read more about JSU’s NIMS Training Plan and determine which classes you should take visit: http://www.jsu.edu/police/emergencymgt/pdf/JSU_NIMS_Training_Plan_with_Profile.pdf or contact Melonie Carmichael at [email protected] or 256-782-5282 for more information.

Human Resources

2016 Employee Benefits and Wellness Fair

The 2016 Employee Benefits and Wellness Fair was a great success. HR teamed with more than 40 providers to bring awareness to benefit opportunities available to JSU employees.

More than 327 faculty and staff attended the fair; the Alabama Department of Public Health was able to administer 140 flu shots, 72 health screenings, and 60 employees were able to complete the Health Questionnaire with a PEEHIP representative. Over 20 door prizes were given out to employees provided

by various sponsors. Breakfast was donated for our vendors’ by the Jacksonville Jack’s Restaurant. McAllister’s Deli in Oxford catered the vendor’s lunch, which was provided by the JSU Foundation and music provided by the JSU Jazz Band.

One of the highlights of the day was seeing the Air Evac/Air Med emergency helicopter land on the front lawn of Bibb Graves for all the staff/faculty to see.

As we move forward and in striving to create and maintain a focus on health and wellness, Human Resources, in collaboration with several local and on-campus partners will be launching a Wellness Campaign for employees. If you interested in working with this initiative, please contact human resources at either 5007 or [email protected]. Information about the health and wellness initiatives will be provided in the coming months.

JSU and the Fair Labor Standards Act updates

The Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) is a federal law that ensures employees are treated fairly, and accurately compensated for their time worked. The FLSA distinguishes work as non-exempt and exempt, and establishes standards for minimum wage, overtime pay, recordkeeping, child labor, and nursing mother breaks and facilities. Most jobs are governed by the FLSA, some are not. Some jobs are excluded from FLSA coverage by statute. Other jobs, while governed by the FLSA, are considered "exempt" from the FLSA overtime rules.

As of May 18, 2016, the US Department of Labor revised the Fair Labor Standards Act. These revisions will become effective December 1, 2016. The Department of Human Resources is in the process of updating our policies and procedures to reflect the new regulations and continues to meet with the University’s leadership to establish and make recommendations to ensure compliance with all FLSA requirements.

Please visit: http://www.jsu.edu/hr/flsa.html for more information on FLSA.
