ThoughTs from a Board memBer....Hello COVVC members and Happy Valentine’s Day to you!

Our February meeting will actually be on Valentines Day, Thursday, February 14th, so I have a feeling there will be a special treat for everyone. Due to scheduling conflicts, our meeting location had to been changed. We will still be meeting at Tommy’s Pizza, but we will be at the Upper Arlington location - their address is 1350 W Lane Ave, Columbus. Please check out their menu at www.tommyspizza.com.

Next I would like to thank everyone that braved the cold and came out to the annual COVVC January banquet at the Spaghetti Warehouse last month. It was great to catch up with those that we do not get to see very often. I would also like to give a big “Thank You” to Kathy Kern for setting up the reservations and taking care of the sign-in/payments for the banquet and membership. With everyone’s hard work throughout the year and most importantly at Volksfest, we were able to make a donation of $5,000 to Kids-N-Kamp at the banquet. Please give yourselves a pat on the back for all of your hard work and dedication that make this possible. For more information about Kids-N-Kamp, please visit their website at giveccfc.org.

At the time of writing this article, Volksfest is only 194 days, 15 hours, 38 minutes away. How do I know this you might ask? Just ask Mark Garrett and he will explain “The Countdown Ticker.” I think he may see it in his nightmares! If you want to check it out for yourself, please check it out on the COVVC website, www.covvc.org, and click on the Volksfest link at the top of the page.

You ask yourself why am I bringing this up in February? It is never too early to start planning for Volksfest 29! Why not use some of these cold winter days to start thinking about T-shirt & trophy designs. These are some of the first things we need to complete to prepare for Volksfest. The sooner we get them done, the sooner we can get the show flyers printed. So, while you sit back and warm up this winter with a cup of coffee, hot chocolate, or your favorite spirit of choice, write down and/or draw out those designs. I would also ask you to start thinking about volunteering at Volksfest. This year we will once again be using the SignUpGenius website to organize our volunteer list. If everyone can sign-up for one 2 hour shift at Volksfest, it makes for a much easier day for everyone. We need volunteers for Friday night setup, car registration, spectator gates, bike riders, t-shirt sales, membership, 50/50 ticket sales, and swap meet registration. If you are interested in any of these areas or would like more information, please reach out to myself or any board member and we would be more than happy to give you the details.

And now onto the fun stuff! It’s never too early to also start thinking about club events, car shows, cruise-ins, or camping trips. Please remember that we can put all of these events on the calendar on our website, our facebook page, and in our monthly newsletter. The sooner we know about them the better. If anyone has any ideas for a club event, maybe a different monthly meeting location, possibly a winery or brewery tour, or perhaps an organized cars and coffee meetup, I would like to hear from you. I would like to see everyone get more involved in the club this year, so I am looking for ways to make that happen. Please feel free to reach out to me by email at [email protected] or give me a call at 740-709-0183 if you have ideas that you would like to discuss.

Thank you for your time, Ryan

For those who don’t know me I have been a member of the Central Ohio Vintage Volkswagen Club since 2002 joining sometime after I purchased my 1960 Beetle. I found out about the club from a friend, former club member, Bob Albright and joined shortly afterward.

Unlike many in the club I didn’t grow up in a Volkswagen family or have any previous experiences with VW’s. I grew up in a small town in southeastern Ohio and there weren’t any foreign cars that I remember in my early years. My father being a WWII vet had pretty much an American car focus and didn’t think much of buying a foreign car. I don’t know why but I developed a keen in-terest in looking at old cars at an early age and loved it when my grandmother or mother would point out an early car coming down the road. I especially loved looking at the thirty’s cars with their big fenders, gleaming grills and exposed headlights. I even got a kick out of seeing an Edsel just because they were different.

I came to Columbus to attend Ohio State and married my wife Janet after we graduated in 1976. I have a degree in Industrial Design and Janet is an Occupational Therapist. We stayed in Columbus and raised two sons. It was during those years that I wanted to have an old car and owned a 1955 Oldsmobile for a number of years but never got to enjoy it much because of the pressures of raising a family and work requirements. Storage was also a problem and I didn’t keep it local. I did develop a love of German cars while going to school which included a study trip to West Germany. My first car was an Opel. I loved the handling and firmer ride that these cars had. An unfortunate accident was the end of that relationship and I purchased my first VW; A 1977 Scirocco. This was really a fun car and I hung on to it for seven years, reluctantly replacing it with a 1984 Scirocco which had more bells and whistles but never seemed to be as much fun to drive as the lighter more agile 1977. I replaced this with my first BMW and then another. It seemed during those years I never found American or Japanese cars much fun to drive and enjoyed my German cars the most.

After my boys were older the thoughts of owning a hobby car returned and I decided to look for an old Beetle. It reminded me of the thirties with its original design and was German. I didn’t know about the COVVC then and started my search on the internet and soon discovered the Samba web site. After a short time, I found an original car in Columbia, SC. I considered this too far away to look for a car but eventually sent an email to the owner to ask a question. We exchanged a few emails and that was it. Or so I thought. A few weeks later he emailed me to ask if I still had any interest and proposed he would either split the shipping cost with me or drive the car to a half way meeting place for me to see the car. I decided it would be best for me to go see the car in person so I could make the decision with less pressure. His wife had surprised him by buying a 1967 Beetle from Oregon as a present and he was motivated to sell. I thought about the trip and my brother lived in Winston-Salem which was a good half way point for the trip. I talked Janet into a road trip and off we went in the Explorer. We stopped overnight and arrived in Irmo outside of Columbia the next morning. We met the owner, drove the car and then Janet and I went to lunch to decide what to do. The car was in great shape and the owner was driving it pretty regularly to work. I thought it looked in good enough shape to drive to Ohio. We went back and struck a deal. We loaded up the Explorer with the extras, the owner’s wife took the kids into the house so they wouldn’t see the little car leaving and we drove away.We drove on the first leg of the journey to Winston-Salem with no real problems and stayed the night. The next morning, we left for Columbus. I soon settled into a fairly sedate 60 - 65 MPH which as Janet tells it was more 50 -55 mph. Whatever. It wasn’t exciting until we got to the mountains of Virginia and I actually passed the first of several semis and a few RV’s. I also found the profound effects of crosswinds blowing up some of the side cuts on the handling of an old Beetle and I soon learned to counter steer into the wind in anticipation. It was also March and I quickly learned how to feather the heat controls and crack the window for fresh air as we moved farther north. Other than gas stops and lunch at Tamarack, WV it was a slow and study trip. I recommend Tamarack as a stop if you’ve never been there. It is a wonderful facility which specializes in Appalachian artistry and cuisine. We continued through West Virginia crossing into Ohio at Point Pleasant and continuing to RT 23 on into Columbus traveling a total of 662 miles with no issues and a lot of thumbs up.

It was the following August I attended my first Volksfest which was the tenth for the club. I’ve served as vice president for four years and was a board member for several more. You will usually find me working the first shift registration at Volksfest every year because it’s the best chance to see the cars coming in and to meet their owners. It is a great show for a great cause and a great meeting place for old friends. For our next member spotlight I would love to know more of Ann Gillman’s early family history of VW’s and what happened with her first Karmann Ghia.

Westfalia History and Evolution,

Few people know that the Westfalia company was founded almost a century before that arose the first VW’s production in series, in the year of 1844 to be exact. Its creator was Jo-hann Knobel, who originally conceived the business to manufacture tools for the agricultural industry. Some years later, he began making carriages and wagons that were pulled by horses. Some of these were to take passengers and it should give them luxury finishes, so joined his workshop a section of paint and up-holstery; Knobel wanted to work carried out by the same, give them your style without having to battle it out with other companies, or having to share profits with third parties. His creations were received with great success, so it focused squarely in this category. Camping began to take popularity beginning in the Decade of the 1920s, and a vehicle coupled with some extra attachments, to make more convenient the trip, was the dream of any family. He drafted the first copies but they were very expensive, had to make many modifications so were only accessible to high socioeconomic extracts.

WESTPHALIA, REBORN LIKE A PHOENIXThe factory had its first setback during the Second World War, virtually was destroyed during a bombardment of the town where it was located (Westphalia), however, could recover enough to get afloat a manufactured van with steel plates, which was displayed at the Hanover fair in 1947. That might have been the end of the company if Volkswagen had not taken off the Transporter market

in 1950. A van with much space and that was mechanically simple, so it became an instant hit in German families. At that time, the shuttle was almost a luxury, so many families used their trucks to earn a living during the week. The Sunday they installed seats in the cargo area to go ride, “transformed them”. This situation caused that soon people install some extra vehicles to make the journey more bearable, to power sleep and cook in it and not have to pay hotels and lodging in vacation homes. Westfalia Company took letters in the topic and started the production of campers, under the premise that were functional, which could add or remove elements with ease, without which they would be fixed or that require many tools, so that they could quickly be converted into cargo vans.

THE FIRST VOLKSWAGEN WESTFALIAWith VW -shaped approach came in 1951, when a U.S. Army officer was contacted by Westfalia to ask them if it was possible to build you a camper, similar to that already made series on trailers. The answer was obvious, and resulted in an order of 50 copies! It was in 1952 when Westphalia came as its first Transporter “Camping Boxes”, boxes of campaign that, behind the front seats, kitchen, sink, and a platform that had the bend turned into bed. During 1954 and 1955, the engine power increased with a decrease in the size of the compartment of the machine, which gave them the ease of deploying more equipment and better space. There were two camping Box which occurred, and carried the title of standard and Export. The standard had a smaller bed, a small Hall and a folding table. many of them were fitted with ceilings Doormobile striped. About 11,000 copies were produced. Its counterpart, the Export, which had a longer bed, a rotary table, stove and sink module. The vehicle had a cost of 2540 German marks. Westphalia gave their vehicles through dealerships, luxury began to be a factor in these trucks, so that in Germany, a camper with these characteristics was inacces-sible to most. As an example, the camper model Export of 1955 cost 9,000 German marks (as well as a Mercedes 190), for which most of the production was exported.

GET THE LUXURY MODELSIn 1956 it launches the Campingwagen Deluxe (SO23), which felt more space inside than the previous model. It had curtains, uphol-stery, ventilation in the roof, roof rack and a water tank with capacity of 90 litres. Interestingly, export to United States models did not have kitchenette, the reason was that in that country, the laws prohibited to use stoves and gas vehicles connections. The model followed in the path of success, at the end of 1963, more than 10,000 Camping Wagens had been produced. The Volkswa-gen type 2 has evolved up to the sixth generation and of one form or another Westphalia went ahead in a highly competitive market, today not only changed models of Volkswagen, but also Mercedes-Benz and other brands. But with less boom than in the past. Over the past decade, 90 percent of its production was exported and United States.

VW Toys & ColleCTiBles Mike Williams

1967 Ski Bus

Welcome back everyone!! Before I get to the featured toy, I wanted to remind everyone that next month (March) will be the Annual toy meeting, I thoroughly enjoy chairing this meeting each year., and look forward to seeing the mini collections brought to the meeting.

The toy I’m sharing with each of you this month shows up occasionally on a popular internet auction sites, and though I’ve searched for this toy for well over 10 years; I’ve come up short in adding it to my collection, but the hunt goes on.....

This month’s VW toy was manufactured by the Buddy L Toy Company of East Moline, Illinois during the mid-1960s. The toy is constructed of steel and is just under 10.5 inches long. In 1967 the Ski Bus was introduced, always in white with dark blue chassis, bumpers and roof rack. This version also came with two soft plastic skiers with movable arms. These figures could sit inside the VW bus or could be outfitted with the provided skis and poles that are carried on the roof rack. The side door had a Buddy L Ski Lodge sticker and the front VW logo was replaced with a snowflake sticker. Seats were light blue, headlights are chromed plastic and the window tint was always blue.

This toy is very rare. I’ve only seen a few examples of this toy for sale and several were missing the box. Also, most examples are missing the plastic skiers, skis, and poles that came with the bus. The box which came with the toy is light brown and depicts two skiers making their way down a ski slope. The value of this toy in good condition (bus only) with no box is around $125 to $150, with a boxed mint example with all accessories coming in around $325 - $475. As I’ve said in articles before, it’s not uncommon though, to see this toy sell well above these figures when collectors get into a bidding war over the same toy.

Until next month… Happy Toy Hunting !!

VW TeCh... Tips, Tricks, Tools & Repairs Bruce AmackerOoooh, What’s that Smell?

Ahhh, the infamous air cooled Volkswagen smell when you turn the heat on, we all know it well. Even the later “Fresh Air” style heating systems get a lot of not-so-fresh air into the cabin when used, and the earlier “Stale Air” systems were downright gross, sometimes filling the car with smoke. This month I’ll give some tips on how to reduce the smell, it’s hard to completely elimi-nate it.

1. If for any reason you suspect an exhaust leak, correct this first. There are alot of ports, seals and parts that usually need attention on our old cars. Use a portable CO detector in the car with the heat on to verify you have no exhaust leaks. I paid $6 each for a couple off the internet, I keep them hanging on the wall in my shop and take them with me in a vehicle when I’m testing things. They are the normal looking home type using AA batteries, I like the kind that has a digital PPM reading.

2. Reduce/eliminate as many oil leaks as possible. The valve cover gaskets and pushrod tubes are some of the biggest culprits here as they will drip directly onto the heater boxes. Bending the valve cover bails to increase the clamp load is a good start, and the Wolfsburg West silicon rubber valve cover gaskets (PN113101481FSI) aren’t a bad idea either, they’re reusable and should last for life. I use a smear of RTV on the lower outside edge where the Valve Cover meets the gasket to promote sealing. Smack the valve covers around a little bit once installed with a big rubber mallet to help seat the cover and gasket. Two piece JayCee aluminum pushrod tubes from CB (PN9232) aren’t cheap but keep you from pulling the engine and head. They seem to be the best answer for on-car replacement but you still have to pull the heater boxes to install any pushrod tubes. I put them on dry after using brake cleaner on all the sealing surfaces.

3. If you’re installing new heater boxes I recommend that you run a thin smear of RTV along the top and bottom crimped edges (of the tin enclosure on the heater box) This will prevent those the inevitable oil leaks from creeping into the heater box. This is where the oil odors come from.

4. If you’re running old oily heater boxes and you’re cheap as hell, burn off the inside of the tin. Remove the HB-to-body tubes, lock the HB flaps open, run the engine at fast idle, and

pass an acetylene torch back and forth across the HB skins, momentarily glow-ing them. Any oil inside the tins will vaporize and turn to coke, reducing oil odor. During this procedure there will be a large amount of oil smoke coming from the HB outlets so do this in a well ventilated area. Block the body inlets with rags and keep the windows up. Once complete you may RTV the tops of the tin seam like above.

Fortunately since its winter, my garage is heated; so I just completed another AC disc brake install on Bus 1 and built a spare 1600 to keep on the shelf. Luckily I have no major issues confronting me, so its just prep work while we wait on another great season of driving for our Vintage VWs.

Good luck, and we’ll talk to you next month!
