What was the Renaissance?
• The European revival of classical art, architecture, literature, and learning.
• The transition from medieval to modern times, lasting roughly from 1400 to 1600 AD.
• Like nothing the world had ever seen before.
One Point Perspective: A type of linear perspective where the sides of objects that are facing the viewer are parallel to the picture plane and there is one vanishing point on the horizon line to which all lines converge.
Picture Plane: An imaginary transparent plane that is between the viewer and the subject.
Horizon Line: The line in a perspective drawing where the sky meets the ground. It also represents the viewer’s eye level.
That is, the placement of the line on the picture plane depends on the vantage point of the artist. For example, if the artist is low to the ground, the horizon line is low on the picture plane. You can see the top of an object if it is below eye level, below the horizon line. If an object is above eye level, above the horizon line, you can not see its top.
Vanishing Point: The vanishing point is where all parallel lines (orthogonal) that run towards the horizon line appear to come together like train tracks in the distance.
Orthogonal Line: the line you draw from the corner of an object to the vanishing point. Think of them as guidelines.
It establishes the illusion of a perpendicular line going into the distance. Orthogonal lines should always be drawn lightly at first. Usually, most of an orthogonal will be erased. Think of them as guidelines.
