Meet the Reps is held to strengthen relations between local businesses and government. Complimentary beer, wine, other beverages &appetizers will be available.

Through the generous support of the Harold Alfond and KeyBank Foundations, Maine’s community colleges will undertake a major expansion of the short-term training they provide to employers, Maine workers, and those seeking to enter the workforce.

The new investments will enable the community colleges to build their capacity to serve many more individuals across a wide range of industries and are designed to serve both the immediate and long-term training needs of Maine citizens and the state’s economy. The funds will support critical investments in staff, information technology, public awareness, and research that will allow the Maine Community College System (MCCS) to transform its delivery of short-term training in order to respond to the current and emerging needs of employers and the state’s workforce. At the same time, the funds will support the development, testing, and delivery of new training modules. The first of these short-

term trainings will be launched this coming summer and will be targeted to four high-demand industries: health care, information technology, construction, and industrial trades. The added capacity made possible by the grant will enable the colleges to expand their current training partnerships and offer new and innovative training options to many other industries across the state.

In addition, the funds will support the development of new educational pathways that lead from short-term training to college credits and credentials. These will include the introduction of industry recognized badges, awarded in recognition of the specific skills gained through short-term training modules that address immediate workforce needs in key Maine industries. Taste of Waterville–Time to Revitalize

We may still be in the heart of a cold Maine winter, but Mid Maine Chamber of Commerce has been actively planning 2019 Taste of Waterville to be held on August 7th in downtown Waterville.

The Chamber conducted surveys and held roundtable discussions with a wide variety of community members to determine how to best bring this festival of foods to Waterville in 2019. We are pleased and excited to share that the Taste of Waterville will be going back to its intended purpose – to showcase the region’s culinary flavors. What does that mean? Details are in the process of being worked out, and we continue to solicit ideas from businesses and community members as we strive to make the 27th Annual Taste of Waterville the best it can be. While it may seem hard to imagine with our current weather, soon the days will be longer, the clocks will be set forward to daylight saving time, the ice will be gone, and it will be time for open water fishing again!

The mid-Maine area has some of the best bass fishing in New England and again, Bassmaster Magazine has rated three of

our lakes in the top one hundred in the country! They are China Lake, Webber Pond and Great Pond. Bassmaster Magazine is the premier bass fishing publication in the country and it certainly shines the spotlight on these and the surrounding lake areas.

On to other exciting news, after a four-year hiatus, Mid-Maine Chamber was able to lure Major League Fishing back to Central Maine. This group said they enjoyed the fishing, accommodations, restaurants and people so much they decided to return. In August of 2018, 30 of the country’s best professional bass fisherman converged in Central Maine.

Major League Fishing is the top circuit for bass fishing in the United States. The show, Major League Fishing has risen to the top of the ratings chart on The Outdoor Channel. The entire tournament took place over six days. This production involved over 40 support staff and over twenty cameras, including drone shots. The first three days were at Great Pond where three groups of ten competed. Each day, six went on, four went home.

The second phase was held on Messalonskee Lake where the remaining 18 competed in a sudden death format. Two groups of nine fished and the first four to catch 22lbs. each day moved on to the final round. On the last day, the remaining eight competed for $100,000 cash, first place prize, on China Lake. The competition was both fierce and intense and there are some great for tv moments.

This was a wonderful opportunity to showcase our beautiful lakes and outstanding bass fishing. Several of the fishing pros took time off to do some quick interviews of their impressions of the fishing, restaurants and people in the mid-Maine area. These videos will be available on www.MidMaineBass.com starting in early February. Major League Fishing show will air on The Outdoor Channel over a six week period. Each show is 2 hours long. The first show will air February 16th. Watch as some of the best anglers slay large and small mouth bass on our lakes!

For the past 27 years, Maine Wilderness Tours has been helping locals and travelers alike enjoy the Maine outdoors. Based on the shores of Messalonskee Lake, a.k.a. Snow Pond in beautiful Belgrade, MWT offers vacation planning, lodging and guide services for fishing, canoeing/kayaking, foraging for fiddleheads and wild mushrooms, photography, hunting and much more. In the colder months, you’ll see MWT’s guides drilling holes in the ice for fishermen or cross-

country skiing and snowshoeing the trails in the Belgrades and the Kennebec Highlands.

The business all started back in 1992 when Mike Guarino was working on his MBA at Thomas College. The year prior he and his family went on vacation to Aruba and Mike chartered a fishing boat for the morning. When the guide started setting out the rods, I noticed there weren’t any hooks on one plug and the other was completely rusted out! At first, I thought it was a joke but soon realized that this guy was serious. I reeled in the rods, put hooks on the lures and started fishing. After that rather odd experience, Mike wrote the business plan as part of this MBA and put together a team of local, professional guides in an effort to ensure travelers to this area would never have a negative experience like that. The business quickly grew and now has 14 guides on staff. To this day, after thousands of trips, I still take great pride in

what they do. Guides can’t always make the fish bite or get a big Maine buck in your scope, but they can definitely up the odds and help make your experience safe and enjoyable.

The best part of years of guiding are all the relationships and friendships you form (and of course, THE STORIES! - that seem to get embellished more and more every year!). Mike has friends from all over the country and the world, and even though they only get to see each other once or twice a year, the bonds are tight. It’s also fun to watch the kids grow up and see how their passion for the outdoors has become a part of their lives. He likes to think he helps make memories that last a lifetime.
