Overall findings of 2013 Native Radio Survey
The hallmark of the native radio system is localism and diversity in programming
Data indicates that local programming is extremely important to Native stations
Who participated in the survey? 42 out of 53 Stations completed survey
Online survey created and administered in Survey Monkey
28 questions grouped into:◦ Internet Usage◦ Programming◦ Regulatory Compliance◦ General questions
Native Stations are bastions of localism

• More than 75% of the stations air local news
• A whopping 90% talked about their community calendar
• and more than 70% aired Tribal specific programming.
• The 2012 found 89% of stations airing local programing, while this year that number would be 100%.
LOCAL PROGRAM PRODUCTION

• 93% of the stations or 38 out of 42 are producing local content.
• Stations are producing cultural programs with 17 of the 42 stations reporting they produce some sort of cultural programming
• Ten stations are producing Native language programming and 7 are producing health programs.
• Five stations are producing youth programs or involving youth in creating those programs.
SHARING PROGRAM CONTENT• Nearly half or 49% of the
stations surveyed reported sharing the content they produce locally.
• Stations indicate that they mostly share with their “sister stations” or other Native stations (7).
• Other places they share content include: other local stations including NPR stations, PRX, APRN, and NV1.
