Fine Arts program. The packet also contains multiple sculpture projects that the art staff can do with

the members at your club. Some of these projects are as simple as paper, scissors, and colors.; some

projects require more supplies and hours to days of down time. You do not have to run art program-

ming everyday; projects with large wait times should be done over a longer period of time with the

same members.

Finished examples and/or instructions are provided for each project.

If you would like the National Fine Arts complete program guide it is available on bgca.net

Dive-In: Daydream Drawing

Description: Staff will lead members through a free-drawing exercise to stretch the imagination, and

warm up the drawing hand.

Materials:

1. 8.5”x11” white paper

2. Pencils

Directions: Say, “For today’s Dive-In, we will take a few minutes to do some free-drawing to warm up

our hands and our imaginations. Position your hand on your paper holding your pencil, ready to draw.

Now close your eyes and follow along with the instructions.”

Now say, “Imagine you are dozing off to sleep. As the events of the day slowly slip away, your mind drifts

off into a world of dreams. You find yourself floating on a raft down a long, deep blue river. It gurgles as

the water rushes along. You lift your head and notice the shore is packed with a thick, lush forest full of

strange trees that you have never seen before. They are brightly colored and very oddly shaped. This for-

est seems to invite you to step inside and look around. Your raft bumps into the shore and you step off

the raft onto some smooth, flat stones. When you step between the first few trees, you hear something

move, then look up with a surprise. Just a few feet in front of you is the most extraordinary creature you

have ever seen!”

“At first you are terrified that it might attack you, and you freeze! But soon you realize that this creature

does not mean you any harm, so you pause and take a closer look. More impressive than any character

you ever saw in a movie or read about in a book, you carefully examine the creature from top to bottom,

noticing every detail. Spend a few moments now picturing the creature in detail. [Pause.] In the next in-

stant, the creature disappears, and you are left standing alone, bewildered.”

Say, “Now open your eyes and sketch the image you are left with.”

Summary: In this hour-long session, mem-

bers are led through a five minute warm-up

exercise to visualize and sketch a sculpture

project, and then they create their own

sculptures with clay.

What is Sculpture?

Sculpture is a three-dimensional art-

work created from carving, molding or

building a structure out of a solid ma-

terial such as clay, wood, plaster or

metal.

1. Cut about 10 feet off one of the twines and roll it in a little ball. Using the end of this twine, tie a knot around the metal ring.

2. Roll the twine tightly around the metal ring. Cover all the metal.

3. When you've reached the knot, tie another knot and cut the twine, leaving enough to hang the dream catcher.

4. To start making the "web" of the dream catcher, use a different color of twine. Roll about 2 feet of twine in a little ball. Tie a knot at the beginning of the ring (where the hanging part is) and then loop it around the whole ring several times. Make it slightly taut.

5. After you have gone around the whole ring, go in again and loop in the same way on the middle of each previous loop. Continue around the ring.

6. After you have finished this second time, cut the twine and tie it in with a new color so you can start 2 more webs around the ring.

7. Tie a knot when you are done and cut the twine close to the knot.

8. Time to add feathers and ornaments. Tie knots to the tip of the feathers and hang the twine on the bottom part of the ring. Glue 2 foam pieces of the same shape to-gether, adding the twine in-between, then hang it from the bottom of the ring.

9. Add at least 4 hanging ornaments and feathers, using twine of all different lengths.
