SOME PRINCIPLES FOR BUILDING A CULTURE OF

PEACE AMONG CHILDREN & YOUTH

1. Learning does not occur without conflicts

2. Conflict resolution and peace building forchildren begins with empathy development

Children with greater empathetic skills are less violentas adults and are more likely to share and help others(Damon, The Moral Child, 1988) “Empathy is thebridge spanning the chasm that separates us from eachother”

3. Children believe what they see and experience

- If adults don’t model peace, children won’t believethat peace is possible

4. No child left friendless

We are born to and for relationship. Children have theneed to be loved and appreciated and thus feel valuedwhen they can contribute meaningfully to thecommunity.

The greatest predictor of academic achievement is thechild’s perception of “Does the teacher like me?”(Nelson, Positive Discipline, 2000)

5. Focus on developing the strength of children
