SINCE 1849, our mission has been to help the poorest and most vulnerable of our community to build brighter futures. Most of the 17,000 low-income people we serve in Fairfield and New Haven counties live at or below the poverty level. They are challenged by a range of complex social, economic and health issues.

Over time, the diversity of our clients and the scope of our services has grown and changed, but our purpose has endured: to help people in crisis acquire the resources, skills and knowledge they need to achieve greater self-sufficiency and lasting change.

To provide these services, LifeBridge employs approximately 200 staff, engages nearly 300 volunteers, and collaborates with over 100 human service and government agencies, civic groups, and community organizations across Connecticut.

Together with you, our supporters, we are:

INSPIRING CHANGE one person at a time—with expert, caring staff and a multi-dimensional, culturally diverse, holistic approach.

EMPOWERING PEOPLE through hands-on, comprehensive services—from counseling and emergency assistance to financial education, and basic literacy and work skills training.

ACHIEVING RESULTS that strengthen our community with a more employable and competitive workforce, empowered and educated youth, and individuals and families better able to cope with life’s challenges.

WHAT IS IT that gives any of us the capacity to bounce back from life’s challenges? In a word: resilience. Each of the individual stories in our annual report this year embody the ineffable quality of resilience. From coping with mental illness, to living in foster care, to learning new work skills, each of these women and men have moved forward positively in their lives. LifeBridge is proud and privileged to have been a support and help along the way.

There are so many stories like these among the thousands of individuals who come to us for help every year. Their grit and determination inspire us to serve them with respect and optimism, knowing that life can be better for each of them, especially when someone believes in them.

Relationships are at the core of resilience—knowing that someone has heard your story, and will stand by you. Over and again, in all our programs, we hear: “LifeBridge didn’t give up on me.” Whether it’s a young mother struggling to earn her diploma and find a job, a working parent trying to create a new business, or an elderly deaf person needing help with daily activities—that personal relationship with a LifeBridge staff member helps to build resilience and nurture success.

Resilience is a trait we share with our clients. Every day, our staff tap their own inner strength and expertise to respond to clients’ urgent and complex needs while striving to improve our services. To stretch limited resources, we’ve expanded our volunteer corps, which provided 10,000 hours of service last year that ranged from helping clients file tax returns, to mentoring and tutoring youth, to sorting clothes in our Community Closet.

This spring, the first floor of our building was completely flooded, requiring us to relocate staff and undertake costly repairs. Our resilient staff doubled-up in offices, worked in hallways, and flexed their hours to avoid disrupting

services to our clients. Administratively, we worked to maintain a “resilient” budget and managed to end the year ahead of budget despite the flood and significant cuts to our state funding.

We were able to do all of this because resiliency is embedded in our culture and operational strategies. For example, we found new ways to acquire the resources we needed to address growing community demand for services

in two key areas. We merged with Fairfield Counseling Services (FCS) last spring to expand our behavioral health services and bring additional expertise to our clinical team. Shortly afterwards, following months of planning, we launched a new social enterprise called FreshConnections. Funded by a three-year start-up federal grant, this exciting

program helps address hunger and community health by bringing affordable fresh fruits and vegetables to “food deserts” where some of Bridgeport’s poorest people live.

Our relationship with you—our supporters—is at the core of our resilience. Thank you for your concern and commitment to our work. Your generous support helps make it possible for thousands of people throughout Fairfield and New Haven counties to develop the resiliency they need to transform their lives and achieve lasting change.

Sincerely,

William J. Hass, Ph.D. Harold J. Trischman, Jr. President & CEO Chairman of the Board

RELATIONSHIPS ARE AT THE CORE OF RESILIENCE—KNOWING THAT SOMEONE HAS HEARD YOUR STORY, AND WILL STAND BY YOU.

AT LIFEBRIDGE we help our clients become more resilient by linking flexible, innovative services that strengthen personal capability, build skills, and identify pathways to economic self-sufficiency. Each client receives an individual plan of comprehensive services utilizing one or more of our four core programs:

From financial education and budget counseling, to work skills training, internships, and small business development—our integrated services help individuals acquire the knowledge,

skills, and resources they need to become more economically self-sufficient and succeed in the workplace.

People struggling with family challenges, personal issues, domestic violence, substance abuse, trauma, grief, and unemployment find support through our trained and licensed

clinicians. LifeBridge operates the only walk-in mental health clinic in Greater Bridgeport, and through a recent merger with Fairfield Counseling Services also provides behavioral health services in Greater Fairfield.

To help at-risk youth ages 14-22 from Greater Bridgeport reach their full potential, we provide comprehensive case management, life-skill and work readiness training, financial education,

remedial math and reading assistance, job-coaching and access to work internships. Our new TechConnections program combines computer science education and work readiness training to prepare our youth for the 21st century workplace.

Our three social enterprise programs provide essential services to some of the region’s most vulnerable people. Through Meals On Wheels, nutritious meals are delivered

to the homes of low-income homebound and disabled people in Greater New Haven. As Connecticut’s leading provider of Sign Language Interpreting Services, we also offer statewide services for the deaf and hard-of-hearing, including case management, information and referrals, and independent living skills. FreshConnections, our newest enterprise, provides affordable fresh produce to low-income neighborhoods in Bridgeport.

BEHAVIORIAL HEALTH

MARIA RECEIVED:• Psychiatric Rehabilitation Services• Individual Therapy• Advocacy and Case Management

Services to strengthen the ability to cope, adapt and overcome life’s challenges

4,400 CLIENTS

MARIAWhen Maria was referred to LifeBridge four years ago, she was so anxious that she could barely make eye contact. Suffering from schizophrenia, she was having delusions and hearing voices. She was also in chronic physical pain from fibromyalgia. She felt helpless and useless. Unable to cope and separated from her husband, Maria lost custody of her son. “My heart was tearing—I felt destroyed—he was my life.”

A LifeBridge therapist and one of our Psychiatric Rehabilitation Services staff worked one-on-one with Maria each week, helping her adjust her medications and focusing on her skills—from shopping for clothes to filling out paperwork in order to access resources. They taught her ways to cope with her physical pain. Together, they created a list of goals to help Maria gain self-confidence and a feeling of purpose. That individual attention—along with her strong faith—have helped Maria on a path to self-sufficiency. “Now, it’s like another life I’m living,” she says.

Maria no longer needs to see her therapist every week. In fact, she has started a support group for other LifeBridge clients and members of her church. “Maria is a social ambassador for LifeBridge,” her case manager says. “She inspires others to take charge of themselves.”

YOUTH SERVICES

KOLACH RECEIVED:• After School Tutoring• Technology Training• Customer Service Training• Personal Support and Mentoring

Comprehensive support for at-risk youth ages 14-23

185CLIENTS

KOLACHWhen Kolach was 12, she and her siblings were placed in foster care because her mother couldn’t take care of them. It was a devastating experience. “It’s like your whole world comes crashing down and your heart breaks into a million pieces,” she said. For two years, they lived with a foster family in Massachusetts until her father won custody and they joined him in Bridgeport.

Life with her father was a hard adjustment, but Kolach says he helped keep her focused. When she was a junior in high school, she enrolled in LifeBridge’s after school digital learning program (TechConnections). Staff and volunteer tutors helped her improve her writing, math, and computer skills, patiently explaining concepts that didn’t come easily.

Staff encouraged Kolach to graduate from high school and then to apply to college, helping with her college essay and even accompanying her to the admissions interview. “Whenever I was discouraged with the application or financial aid process, the staff helped me and encouraged me to push forward,” she says. Today Kolach is a proud student at Housatonic Community College and helps support herself with a part-time receptionist job.

Hands-on technology training, mentoring and personal support from LifeBridge has made a big impact on Kolach’s life. With a college education underway, a job, and a plan, she feels optimistic and confident about her future.

ECONOMIC EMPOWERMENT

DAVIDAs a single father raising two special needs children, David struggled to access the resources they needed to have a stable, normal life.

David was referred to LifeBridge by the Department of Children & Families while he was seeking custody of his children. His counselor helped him to face challenges and prepare to raise his special needs children as a single father. “She’s an outstanding therapist—and an outstanding person. If it weren’t for her, I wouldn’t have been able to do half the things I’ve done.”

After sharing his dream of starting his own business, David was encouraged to enroll in our Workshop in Business Opportunities (WIBO) program. WIBO gave him the skills and confidence he needed to start a part-time business, utilizing his experience advocating for services, to help other parents with special needs children gain the resources they need.

Today David lives a busy and fulfilling life. He works hard to balance family life, his business and full-time work as a job coach at a social service agency. “My children are my motivators,” he says. “It’s a lot to juggle, but it’s all worth it.

ECONOMIC EMPOWERMENT / WORKSKILLS

MARIAM RECEIVED:• Work Skills Training• Subsidized Internships• One-on-one Coaching and Remedial Assistance• Resume Building

Educational and financial services aimed toward economic self-sufficiency

7,000 CLIENTS

MARIAMWhen Mariam, a single mom, came to LifeBridge she didn’t have a high school diploma, a job, or plan to get them. After assessing her situation, our staff worked with Mariam to set educational, financial, and employment goals and helped provide her with the services she needed to achieve them.

Working with her every step of the way, LifeBridge staff provided multi-dimensional support that enabled her to earn her high school diploma and take one of our customer service courses. When she completed her course, staff helped her to create a resume and get a subsidized work internship at Leisha’s Bakeria. Through Leisha, a recent graduate of our small business program (WIBO), Mariam learned a lot about operating a food business and acquired important work skills. “I learned from Miss Leisha how to be responsible, and that the customer comes first.”

Mariam’s internship opened her eyes to the range of opportunities that come with experience and education, and inspired her to dream of running a restaurant someday. Recently, LifeBridge staff helped her obtain financial aid and enroll in part-time evening classes at a local community college where she’s working towards an associate degree in Business Management.

BILLY RECEIVED:• Counseling and Case Management for the Deaf • In-Home Assistance• Meals On Wheels for the Elderly and Disabled

Mission-based, revenue-generating services that address important community needs

5,800 CLIENTS

BILLYDeaf since birth, Billy worked as a custodian at Trumbull High School for 39 years. Now retired, Billy lives alone and has suffered two strokes, making it difficult for him to get around.

It hasn’t been an easy life, but as his case worker says, “Billy is a fighter.” To help Billy live independently, our Deaf Services staff created a supportive network—visiting him every week, taking him to his medical appointments, food shopping, teaching him to adopt a healthy diet for his diabetes, and enrolling him in our Meals on Wheels program so he could receive hot meals in his home. To help him stay connected with the outside world, staff also taught him how to use his video phone so he can communicate with friends and family using sign language.

A brave and cheerful man, Billy continues to enjoy life and regularly participates in LifeBridge’s social activities for the deaf, including Bingo games, pot luck dinners, and our annual Deaf Services picnic.
