{ Their attributes , credentials , motives and theirdestiny }

( Compiled by Hesham A Syed )

'The disbelievers'In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Many are the Jinns and men ( or women ) we have made for Hell: They havehearts wherewith they understand not, eyes wherewith they see not, and earswherewith they hear not. They are like cattle,- nay more misguided: for they areheedless (of warning) . ( Quran –surah alanam).

1.'All their actions in the life of this world will come to nothing'In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

What they spend in the life of this (material) world May be likened to a wind which brings anipping frost: It strikes and destroys the harvest of men who have wronged their ownsouls: it is not Allah that hath wronged them, but they wrong themselves. ( Surah Al-Imran, 117 )

Those who desire the life of the present and its glitter,- to them we shall pay (the price of)their deeds therein,- without diminution. ( Surah Hud, 15 )

They are those for whom there is nothing in the Hereafter but the Fire: vain are thedesigns they frame therein, and of no effect and the deeds that they do! ( Surah Hud, 16 )

Say: "Shall we tell you of those who lose most in respect of their deeds?- ( Surah Al-Kahf,103 )

"Those whose efforts have been wasted in this life, while they thought that they wereacquiring good by their works?" ( Surah Al-Kahf, 104 )

They are those who deny the Signs of their Lord and the fact of their having to meet Him(in the Hereafter): vain will be their works, nor shall We, on the Day of Judgment, givethem any weight. ( Surah Al-Kahf, 105

2. 'Their hearts are full of avarice for this world'In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

So when ye have accomplished your holy rites, celebrate the praises of Allah, as ye used tocelebrate the praises of your fathers,- yea, with far more Heart and soul. There are men

who say: "Our Lord! Give us (Thy bounties) in this world!" but they will have no portion inthe Hereafter. ( Surah Al-Baqara, 200 )

"Such as took their religion to be mere amusement and play, and were deceived by the lifeof the world." That day shall We forget them as they forgot the meeting of this day of theirs, and as they were wont to reject Our signs. ( Surah Al-A‘raf, 51 )

Say: If it be that your fathers, your sons, your brothers, your mates, or your kindred; thewealth that ye have gained; the commerce in which ye fear a decline: or the dwellings inwhich ye delight - are dearer to you than Allah, or His Messenger, or the striving in Hiscause;- then wait until Allah brings about His decision: and Allah guides not the rebellious.(Surah At-Tawba, 24 )

Those who love the life of this world more than the Hereafter, who hinder (men) from thePath of Allah and seek therein something crooked: they are astray by a long distance.(Surah İbrahim, 3 )

Leave Me alone, (to deal) with the (creature) whom I created (bare and) alone!- ( SurahAl-Muddaththir, 11 )

To whom I granted resources in abundance, ( Surah Al-Muddaththir, 12 )

And sons to be by his side!- ( Surah Al-Muddaththir, 13 )

To whom I made (life) smooth and comfortable! ( Surah Al-Muddaththir, 14 )

Yet is he greedy-that I should add (yet more);- ( Surah Al-Muddaththir, 15 )"This, because ye used to take the Signs of Allah in jest, and the life of the world deceivedyou:" (From) that Day, therefore, they shall not be taken out thence, nor shall they bereceived into Grace. ( Surah Al-Jathiyya, 35 )

Therefore shun those who turn away from Our Message and desire nothing but the life of this world. ( Surah An-Najm, 29 )

3. 'Their hearts are insensitive to faith'In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

And We put coverings over their hearts (and minds) lest they should understand the

Qur'an, and deafness into their ears: when thou dost commemorate thy Lord and Himalone in the Qur'an, they turn on their backs, fleeing (from the Truth). ( Surah Al-Isra’,46 )

And who doth more wrong than one who is reminded of the Signs of his Lord, but turnsaway from them, forgetting the (deeds) which his hands have sent forth? Verily We haveset veils over their hearts lest they should understand this, and over their ears, deafness, if

thou callest them to guidance, even then will they never accept guidance. ( Surah Al-Kahf,57 )

Then seest thou such a one as takes as his god his own vain desire? Allah has, knowing(him as such), left him astray, and sealed his hearing and his heart (and understanding),and put a cover on his sight. Who, then, will guide him after Allah (has withdrawn

Guidance)? Will ye not then receive admonition? ( Surah Al-Jathiyya, 23 )

4. 'They act on supposition and conjecture'In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Those who give partners (to Allah.will say: "If Allah had wished, we should not have givenpartners to Him nor would our fathers; nor should we have had any taboos." So did theirancestors argue falsely, until they tasted of Our wrath.Say: "Have ye any (certain)knowledge? If so, produce it before us.Ye follow nothing but conjecture: ye do nothing butlie." ( Surah Al-An‘am, 148 )

But most of them follow nothing but fancy: truly fancy can be of no avail against

truth.Verily Allah is well aware of all that they do. ( Surah Yunus, 36 )

Behold! verily to Allah belong all creatures, in the heavens and on earth. What do theyfollow who worship as His "partners" other than Allah. They follow nothing but fancy, andthey do nothing but lie. ( Surah Yunus, 66 )

And they say: "What is there but our life in this world? We shall die and we live, andnothing but time can destroy us." But of that they have no knowledge: they merelyconjecture: ( Surah Al-Jathiyya, 24 )

Woe to the falsehood-mongers,- ( Surah Adh-Dhariyat, 10 )

5. 'They are addicted to their appetites'In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Fair in the eyes of men is the love of things they covet: Women and sons; Heaped-uphoards of gold and silver; horses branded (for blood and excellence); and (wealth of) cattleand well-tilled land.Such are the possessions of this world's life; but in nearness to Allah isthe best of the goals (To return to). ( Surah Al-Imran, 14 )

Allah doth wish to Turn to you, but the wish of those who follow their lusts is that yeshould turn away (from Him),- far, far away. ( Surah An-Nisa’, 27 )

"For ye practise your lusts on men in preference to women : ye are indeed a peopletransgressing beyond bounds." ( Surah Al-A‘raf, 81 )

But after them there followed a posterity who missed prayers and followed after lusts soon, then, will they face Destruction,- ( Surah Maryam, 59 )

"Of all the creatures in the world, will ye approach males, ( Surah Ash-Shu‘ara’, 165 )

6. 'They are aggressive and merciless'In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Even so, in the eyes of most of the pagans, their "partners" made alluring the slaughter of their children, in order to lead them to their own destruction, and cause confusion in theirreligion. If Allah had willed, they would not have done so: But leave alone them and theirinventions. ( Surah Al-An‘am, 137 )

Said the chiefs of Pharaoh's people: "Wilt thou leave Moses and his people, to spread

mischief in the land, and to abandon thee and thy gods?" He said: "Their male children willwe slay; (only) their females will we save alive; and we have over them (power)irresistible." ( Surah Al-A‘raf, 127 )

Truly Pharaoh elated himself in the land and broke up its people into sections, depressing asmall group among them: their sons he slew, but he kept alive their females: for he wasindeed a maker of mischief. ( Surah Al-Qasas, 4 )

And none can deny it but the Transgressor beyond bounds the Sinner! ( Surah Al-Mutaffifin, 12 )

7. 'They are arrogant and spoilt'In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Flee not, but return to the good things of this life which were given you, and to your homesin order that ye may be called to account. ( Surah Al-Anbiya’, 13 )

And how many populations We destroyed, which exulted in their life (of ease and plenty)!now those habitations of theirs, after them, are deserted,- All but a (miserable) few! andWe are their heirs! ( Surah Al-Qasas, 58 )

Qarun was doubtless, of the people of Moses; but he acted insolently towards them: suchwere the treasures We had bestowed on him that their very keys would have been aburden to a body of strong men, behold, his people said to him: "Exult not, for Allah lovethnot those who exult (in riches). ( Surah Al-Qasas, 76 )

"(The reply will be:) 'Nay, but there came to thee my Signs, and thou didst reject them:thou wast Haughty, and became one of those who reject faith!'" ( Surah Az-Zumar, 59 )

8. 'They are arrogant regarding Allah's signs'In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

When it is said to him, "Fear Allah., He is led by arrogance to (more) crime.Enough for himis Hell;-An evil bed indeed (To lie on)! ( Surah Al-Baqara, 206 )

Christ disdaineth nor to serve and worship Allah, nor do the angels, those nearest (toAllah.: those who disdain His worship and are arrogant,-He will gather them all togetherunto Himself to (answer). ( Surah An-Nisa’, 172 )

But those who reject Our signs and treat them with arrogance,- they are companions of the Fire, to dwell therein (for ever). ( Surah Al-A‘raf, 36 )

The leaders of the arrogant party among his people said to those who were reckonedpowerless - those among them who believed: "know ye indeed that Salih is an apostle fromhis Lord?" They said: "We do indeed believe in the revelation which hath been sent throughhim." ( Surah Al-A‘raf, 75 )

The Arrogant party said: "For our part, we reject what ye believe in." ( Surah Al-A‘raf, 76 )

When Our Clear Signs are rehearsed to them, thou wilt notice a denial on the faces of theUnbelievers! they nearly attack with violence those who rehearse Our Signs to them.Say,"Shall I tell you of something (far) worse than these Signs? It is the Fire (of Hell)! Allah haspromised it to the Unbelievers! and evil is that destination!" ( Surah Al-Hajj, 72 )

Such as fear not the meeting with Us (for Judgment) say: "Why are not the angels sentdown to us, or (why) do we not see our Lord?" Indeed they have an arrogant conceit of themselves, and mighty is the insolence of their impiety! ( Surah Al-Furqan, 21 )

When it is said to them, "Adore ye ((Allah)) Most Gracious!", they say, "And what is((Allah)) Most Gracious? Shall we adore that which thou commandest us?" And it increasestheir flight (from the Truth). ( Surah Al-Furqan, 60 )

And they rejected those Signs in iniquity and arrogance, though their souls were convincedthereof: so see what was the end of those who acted corruptly! ( Surah An-Naml, 14 )

He hears the Signs of Allah rehearsed to him, yet is obstinate and lofty, as if he had notheard them: then announce to him a Penalty Grievous! ( Surah Al-Jathiyya, 8 )

9. 'They are boastful of their wealth and power'In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

(Abundant) was the produce this man had : he said to his companion, in the course of amutual argument: "more wealth have I than you, and more honour and power in (myfollowing of) men." ( Surah Al-Kahf, 34 )

Now the 'Ad behaved arrogantly through the land, against (all) truth and reason, and said:"Who is superior to us in strength?" What! did they not see that Allah, Who created them, was superior to them in strength? But they continued to reject Our Signs! ( SurahFussilat, 15 )

And Pharaoh proclaimed among his people, saying: "O my people! Does not the dominionof Egypt belong to me, (witness) these streams flowing underneath my (palace)? What!see ye not then? ( Surah Az-Zukhruf, 51 )

"Am I not better than this (Moses), who is a contemptible wretch and can scarcely expresshimself clearly? ( Surah Az-Zukhruf, 52 )

"Then why are not gold bracelets bestowed on him, or (why) come (not) with him angelsaccompanying him in procession?" ( Surah Az-Zukhruf, 53 )

10. 'They are disrespectful towards Allah'In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

And they (even) assign, to things they do not know, a portion out of that which We havebestowed for their sustenance! By Allah, ye shall certainly be called to account for yourfalse inventions. ( Surah An-Nahl, 56 )

And they assign daughters for Allah.- Glory be to Him! - and for themselves (sons,- theissue) they desire! ( Surah An-Nahl, 57 )

For they, when they were told that there is no god except Allah, would puff themselves upwith Pride, ( Surah As-Saffat, 35 )

11. 'They are distressed'In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Those whom Allah (in His plan) willeth to guide,- He openeth their breast to Islam; thosewhom He willeth to leave straying,- He maketh their breast close and constricted, as if theyhad to climb up to the skies: thus doth Allah (heap) the penalty on those who refuse tobelieve. ( Surah Al-An‘am, 125 )

Being true in faith to Allah, and never assigning partners to Him: if anyone assignspartners to Allah, is as if he had fallen from heaven and been snatched up by birds, or thewind had swooped (like a bird on its prey) and thrown him into a far- distant place. ( SurahAl-Hajj, 31 )

12. 'They are doubtful of the Qur'an'In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Those who reject Faith will not cease to be in doubt concerning (Revelation) until the Hour(of Judgment) comes suddenly upon them, or there comes to them the Penalty of a Day of Disaster. ( Surah Al-Hajj, 55 )

13. 'They are friends of satan'In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Those who believe fight in the cause of Allah, and those who reject Faith Fight in the causeof Evil: So fight ye against the friends of Satan: feeble indeed is the cunning of Satan.(Surah An-Nisa’, 76 )

14. 'They are in a permanent doubt and anxiety'In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

He it is created you from clay, and then decreed a stated term (for you). And there is in Hispresence another determined term; yet ye doubt within yourselves! ( Surah Al-An‘am, 2 )

They said: "O Salih! thou hast been of us! a centre of our hopes hitherto! dost thou (now)forbid us the worship of what our fathers worshipped? But we are really in suspicious(disquieting) doubt as to that to which thou invitest us." ( Surah Hud, 62 )

Has not the story reached you, (O people!), of those who (went) before you? - of thepeople of Noah, and 'Ad, and Thamud? - And of those who (came) after them? None knowsthem but Allah. To them came apostles with Clear (Signs); but they put their hands up totheir mouths, and said: "We do deny (the mission) on which ye have been sent, and we

are really in suspicious (disquieting) doubt as to that to which ye invite us." ( Surahİbrahim, 9 )

Those who reject Faith will not cease to be in doubt concerning (Revelation) until the Hour(of Judgment) comes suddenly upon them, or there comes to them the Penalty of a Day of Disaster. ( Surah Al-Hajj, 55 )

15. 'They are in discord even among themselves'In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Mankind was one single nation, and Allah sent Messengers with glad tidings and warnings;and with them He sent the Book in truth, to judge between people in matters wherein theydiffered; but the People of the Book, after the clear Signs came to them, did not differamong themselves, except through selfish contumacy.Allah by His Grace Guided thebelievers to the Truth, concerning that wherein they differed. For Allah guided whom He willto a path that is straight. ( Surah Al-Baqara, 213 )

But the Unbelievers (are steeped) in self-glory and Separatism. ( Surah Sâd, 2 )

16. 'They are in horror'In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Soon shall We cast terror into the hearts of the Unbelievers, for that they joinedcompanions with Allah, for which He had sent no authority: their abode will be the Fire:And evil is the home of the wrong-doers! ( Surah Al-Imran, 151 )

17. 'They are insistent in their denial'In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

They swear their strongest oaths by Allah, that if a (special) sign came to them, by it theywould believe.Say: "Certainly (all) signs are in the power of Allah.but what will make you(Muslims) realise that (even) if (special) signs came, they will not believe."? ( Surah Al-An‘am, 109 )

Even if We opened out to them a gate from heaven, and they were to continue (all day)ascending therein, ( Surah Al-Hijr, 14 )

They would only say: "Our eyes have been intoxicated: Nay, we have been bewitched bysorcery." ( Surah Al-Hijr, 15 )

And persisted obstinately in wickedness supreme! ( Surah Al-Waqi‘a, 46 )

They said: "It is the same to us whether thou admonish us or be not among (our)admonishers! ( Surah Ash-Shu‘ara’, 136 )

"This is no other than a customary device of the ancients, ( Surah Ash-Shu‘ara’, 137 )

"And we are not the ones to receive Pains and Penalties!" ( Surah Ash-Shu‘ara’, 138 )

He hears the Signs of Allah rehearsed to him, yet is obstinate and lofty, as if he had notheard them: then announce to him a Penalty Grievous! ( Surah Al-Jathiyya, 8 )

Or who is there that can provide you with Sustenance if He were to withhold His provision?Nay, they obstinately persist in insolent impiety and flight (from the Truth). ( Surah Al-Mulk, 21 )

18. 'They are never satisfied'

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most MercifulLeave Me alone, (to deal) with the (creature) whom I created (bare and) alone!- ( SurahAl-Muddaththir, 11 )

To whom I granted resources in abundance, ( Surah Al-Muddaththir, 12 )

And sons to be by his side!- ( Surah Al-Muddaththir, 13 )

To whom I made (life) smooth and comfortable! ( Surah Al-Muddaththir, 14 )

Yet is he greedy-that I should add (yet more);- ( Surah Al-Muddaththir, 15 )

For thy Lord is (as a Guardian) on a watch-tower. ( Surah Al-Fajr, 14 )

Now, as for man, when his Lord trieth him, giving him honour and gifts, then saith he,(puffed up), "My Lord hath honoured me." ( Surah Al-Fajr, 15 )

But when He trieth him, restricting his subsistence for him, then saith he (in despair), "MyLord hath humiliated me!" ( Surah Al-Fajr, 16 )

19. 'They are parsimonious'In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

(Nor) those who are niggardly or enjoin niggardliness on others, or hide the bounties whichAllah hath bestowed on them; for We have prepared, for those who resist Faith, apunishment that steeps them in contempt;- ( Surah An-Nisa’, 37 )

Have they a share in dominion or power? Behold, they give not a farthing to their fellow-men? ( Surah An-Nisa’, 53 )

Say: "If ye had control of the Treasures of the Mercy of my Lord, behold, ye would keepthem back, for fear of spending them: for man is (every) niggardly!" ( Surah Al-Isra’,100 )

20. 'They are squanderers'In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Verily spendthrifts are brothers of the Evil Ones; and the Evil One is to his Lord (himself)

ungrateful. ( Surah Al-Isra’, 27 )

21. 'They are unclean'In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

O ye who believe! Truly the Pagans are unclean; so let them not, after this year of theirs, approach the Sacred Mosque. And if ye fear poverty, soon will Allah enrich you, if He wills, out of His bounty, for Allah is All-knowing, All-wise. ( Surah At-Tawba, 28 )

22. 'They are ungrateful'In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

When trouble toucheth a man, He crieth unto Us (in all postures)- lying down on his side,or sitting, or standing. But when We have solved his trouble, he passeth on his way as if he

had never cried to Us for a trouble that touched him! thus do the deeds of transgressorsseem fair in their eyes! ( Surah Yunus, 12 )

If We give man a taste of Mercy from Ourselves, and then withdraw it from him, behold! heis in despair and (falls into) blasphemy. ( Surah Hud, 9 )

Thus have we sent thee amongst a People before whom (long since) have (other) Peoples(gone and) passed away; in order that thou mightest rehearse unto them what We senddown unto thee by inspiration; yet do they reject (Him), the Most Gracious! Say: "He is myLord! There is no god but He! On Him is my trust, and to Him do I turn!" ( Surah Ar-Ra‘d,30 )

Yet, when He removes the distress from you, behold! some of you turn to other gods to

join with their Lord- ( Surah An-Nahl, 54 )

(As if) to show their ingratitude for the favours we have bestowed on them! then enjoy(your brief day): but soon will ye know (your folly)! ( Surah An-Nahl, 55 )

And Allah has made for you mates (and companions) of your own nature, and made foryou, out of them, sons and daughters and grandchildren, and provided for you sustenanceof the best: will they then believe in vain things, and be ungrateful for Allah.s favours?-(Surah An-Nahl, 72 )

When distress seizes you at sea, those that ye call upon - besides Himself - leave you inthe lurch! but when He brings you back safe to land, ye turn away (from Him).Mostungrateful is man! ( Surah Al-Isra’, 67 )

Now, when trouble touches man, he cries to Us: But when We bestow a favour upon himas from Ourselves, he says, "This has been given to me because of a certain knowledge (Ihave)!" Nay, but this is but a trial, but most of them understand not! ( Surah Az-Zumar,49 )

23. 'They are unworthy of trust'In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Those who break Allah.s Covenant after it is ratified, and who sunder what Allah Hasordered to be joined, and do mischief on earth: These cause loss (only) to themselves.(Surah Al-Baqara, 27 )

Is it not (the case) that every time they make a covenant, some party among them throwit aside?- Nay, Most of them are faithless. ( Surah Al-Baqara, 100 )

They have "Obedience" on their lips; but when they leave thee, a section of them Meditateall night on things very different from what thou tellest them. But Allah records their nightly(plots): So keep clear of them, and put thy trust in Allah, and enough is Allah as a disposerof affairs. ( Surah An-Nisa’, 81 )

But because of their breach of their covenant, We cursed them, and made their heartsgrow hard; they change the words from their (right) places and forget a good part of themessage that was sent them, nor wilt thou cease to find them- barring a few - ever benton (new) deceits: but forgive them, and overlook (their misdeeds): for Allah loveth thosewho are kind. ( Surah Al-Ma’ida, 13 )

Most of them We found not men (true) to their covenant: but most of them We foundrebellious and disobedient. ( Surah Al-A‘raf, 102 )

They are those with whom thou didst make a covenant, but they break their covenantevery time, and they have not the fear (of Allah.. ( Surah Al-Anfal, 56 )

In a Believer they respect not the ties either of kinship or of covenant! It is they who havetransgressed all bounds. ( Surah At-Tawba, 10 )

24. 'They argue about Allah and the religion despite their lack of knowledge'

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Ah! Ye are those who fell to disputing (Even) in matters of which ye had some knowledge!but why dispute ye in matters of which ye have no knowledge? It is Allah Who knows, andye who know not! ( Surah Al-Imran, 66 )

When they do aught that is shameful, they say: "We found our fathers doing so"; and"(Allah) commanded us thus": Say: "Nay, Allah never commands what is shameful: do yesay of Allah what ye know not?" ( Surah Al-A‘raf, 28 )

No knowledge have they of such a thing, nor had their fathers. It is a grievous thing thatissues from their mouths as a saying what they say is nothing but falsehood! ( Surah Al-

Kahf, 5 )Yet there is among men such a one as disputes about Allah, without Knowledge, withoutGuidance, and without a Book of Enlightenment,- ( Surah Al-Hajj, 8 )

Do ye not see that Allah has subjected to your (use) all things in the heavens and on earth, and has made his bounties flow to you in exceeding measure, (both) seen and unseen? Yetthere are among men those who dispute about Allah, without knowledge and withoutguidance, and without a Book to enlighten them! ( Surah Luqman, 20 )

Likewise did We make for every Messenger an enemy,- evil ones among men and jinns, inspiring each other with flowery discourses by way of deception. If thy Lord had soplanned, they would not have done it: so leave them and their inventions alone. ( SurahAl-An‘am, 112 )
