Introduction: ACT College and Career Readiness Solutions

ACT Research Drives the Development of our College and Career Readiness Solutions.ACT research confirms that the same level of academic achievement is needed for success in college or a career. It also establishes that students need to begin planning for college and career early, by taking rigorous courses and monitoring their progress toward college and career readiness. It supports the use of curriculum-based longitudinal assessments and curriculum and educational practice improvements that meet rigorous course standards.

The research also shows what skills colleges expect incoming first-year students to possess and what skills employers want employees to have before they enter the workforce.

The ACT College Readiness StandardsACT college and career readiness assessments are empirically linked to the research-based College Readiness Standards and are aligned with the Common Core Standards.

The College Readiness Standards are statements describing the knowledge and skills typically demonstrated by students who score in a particular score range. ACT Explore®, ACT Plan®, and the ACT® college readiness assessment are the only assessments that empirically link test scores directly to these learning standards.

Based on scores, these assessments indicate what students are likely to know and are able to do. The College Readiness Standards are the key to understanding what scores really mean.

ACT College Readiness Standards in ActionIn schools around the country, teachers, students, and administrators are using ACT Standards in innovative ways.

Find out how the ACT College and Career Readiness Standards have helped schools in Illinois, Oklahoma, and Washington at www.act.org/standard/action.

ACT College Readiness BenchmarksThe ACT College Readiness Benchmarks are the minimum English, reading, mathematics, and science assessment scores required for students to have a 50 percent chance of obtaining a B or higher or about a 75 percent chance of obtaining a C or higher in the corresponding credit-bearing college course.

Based on a nationally representative sample of 98 institutions and more than 90,000 students, the Benchmarks are median course placement values for these institutions and as such represent a typical set of expectations.

Aligned, Longitudinal Assessment Solutions and Instructional SupportACT’s annual report, The Condition of College and Career Readiness, analyzes data about the potential achievement and abilities of students in all 50 states. The report exposes likely shortfalls in high-growth career fields, as well as inadequate preparation of the nation’s students to succeed in coursework required for these fields.

Our research reveals the best strategies to address these challenges are:

❚ Educators must measure what students know at a point early enough in their academic careers to make adjustments and continue to measure their progress and what they learn over time.

❚ Schools must match instruction to Common Core State Standards by installing rigorous curriculum.

❚ Educators and counselors should implement individualized student interventions and assistance at the right time so students acquire the right skills and knowledge.

❚ Schools should evaluate and address the psychosocial obstacles that prevent individual students from achieving in the classroom.

In response to the research findings, ACT developed College and Career Readiness curriculum-based solutions that respond to the need for a better educated workforce.

ACT’s Definition of College and Career Readiness

ACT defines college and career readiness as “the acquisition of the knowledge and skills a student needs to enroll in and succeed in credit-bearing first-year courses at a postsecondary institution (such as a two- or four-year college, trade school, or technical school) without the need for remediation.”

The ACT ContinuumACT assessments provide a longitudinal approach to college and career planning through assessment, curriculum support, and student evaluation. Our research-based solutions are designed to help schools, districts, and states prepare every student for college and career by focusing on academic and noncognitive measurement and instructional improvement.

Aligned with the ACT College Readiness Standards and Benchmarks, ACT assessments encourage student academic and behavioral planning through identification of educational and career goals in diverse educational institutions nationwide.

ComponentsACT Explore, ACT Plan, and the ACT are enhanced by ACT Engage™, a behavioral assessment for middle school to college students that measures noncognitive, psychosocial characteristics such as motivation, self-regulation, and social engagement. Educators can use ACT Engage results and the suggested interventions to help each student succeed in the classroom.

ACT Aspire™, a new computer-based, longitudinal assessment system that connects a student’s growth and progress from elementary grades through high school, will launch in spring 2014. ACT Aspire is linked to the ACT College Readiness Benchmarks and anchored by the capstone ACT test. Learn more at www.discoveractaspire.org.

Supporting these programs with instructional improvement programs are ACT QualityCore®, ACT Core Practice Audit and ACT CoreWork® Diagnostics.

❚ ACT QualityCore is a research-driven high school instructional improvement program that adds rigor to the curriculum.

❚ ACT Core Practice Audit is an objective evaluation of a school district’s practices correlated to teaching and learning.

❚ ACT CoreWork Diagnostics is an online, research-based program that empowers district and school leaders to self-assess and benchmark their teaching and learning practices against those of higher performing school systems.

ACT National Curriculum Survey®

The ACT National Curriculum Survey is a nationwide survey of educational practices and expectations. Conducted every three to five years by ACT, the survey collects data about what entering college students should know and be able to do to be ready for college-level coursework in English, math, reading, and science.

❚ The most recent results from 2012 are based on a national sample of 9,937 participants, including elementary school teachers, middle school/junior high school teachers, high school teachers, and college instructors in English, writing, math, reading, and science.

❚ The results of the survey are used to inform ongoing efforts to develop, refine, and update common academic standards such as the Common Core State Standards, as well as to inform policymakers and educators.

❚ The results are also used to help guide development of the ACT curriculum-based assessments—ACT Explore for 8th and 9th graders, ACT Plan for 10th graders, and the ACT for 11th and 12th graders—and ensure that they meet the needs of college and career readiness.

Learn more at www.act.org/research-policy/national-curriculum-survey

The ACT FoundationIn 2009, the ACT Board of Directors established the ACT Foundation. The ACT Foundation supports the ACT mission—helping people achieve education and workplace success—by facilitating and funding initiatives aimed at enriching that mission.

The ACT Foundation pursues advances in education by providing programs and services and conducting research that assist:

Analyzing The ACT Profile ReportThe ACT Profile Report provides information about the performance of your 2012 graduating seniors who took the ACT as sophomores, juniors, or seniors, self-reported at the time of testing that they were scheduled to graduate in 2012, and tested under standard time conditions. The ACT Profile Report is mailed to school principals.

This report focuses on:Performance—student test performance in the context of college readiness

Access—number of your graduates exposed to college entrance testing and the percent of race/ethnicity participation

Course Selection—percent of students pursuing a core curriculum

Course Rigor—impact of rigorous coursework on achievement

College Readiness—percent of students meeting ACT College Readiness Benchmark Scores in each content area

Awareness—extent to which student aspirations match performance

Articulation—colleges and universities to which your students send test results

Note: To view the graduating class of 2012 National ACT Profile Report or your state report, visit http://www.act.org/research-policy/college-career-readiness-report-2012
