Whale Knitting Pattern

Thank you so much for buying my whale knitting pattern, meet Glider, he is a sweet creature

that lives in the sea. Whales are mammals, they are warm blooded, feed their young and give

birth to live young. A baby whale is called a calf, males are called bulls and females are called

cows. Whales cannot sleep for long periods of time because they need to surface in order to

breathe. A group of whales is called a pod.

Materials:

Blue variegated double knitting (DK) wool from Colourspun

4mm circular needles or DPNs

Black wool fleece and a felting needle

Wool needle for sewing up

Merino fleece

Pattern:

This pattern is knitted in the round with circular needles with the magic loop technique. You

can also knit this pattern with DPNs in the round.

Abbreviations:

Kfb: knit into the front and back of a stitch for increasing.

Cast on 6 stitches and join for knitting in the round.

Round 1: Knit

Round 2: Kfb int0 each stitch (12 stitches)

Round 3: Knit

Round 4: Kfb into each stitch (24 stitches)

Round 5: Knit

Round 6: Kfb into each stitch (48 stitches)

Rounds 7-26: Knit

Round 27: Knit round and knit 2 stitches together before and after the two middle stitches.

(46 stitches)

Round 28: Knit

Round 29: Knit round and knit 2 stitches together before and after the two middle stitches.

(44 stitches)

Round 30: knit

Rounds 31-42: Knit round and knit 2 stitches together before and after the two middle

stitches. (20 stitches)

Start stuffing your whale until the point where the tail begins so that he is firm.

Round 52: Knit 4 stitches, kfb, knit 2 stitches, kfb, knit 4 stitches, knit 4 stitches, kfb, knit 2

stitches, kfb, knit 4 stitches (28 stitches)

Round 53: Knit 5 stitches, kfb, knit 2 stitches, kfb, knit5 stitches, knit 5 stitches,kfb, knit 2

stitches, kfb, knit 5 stitches (32 stitches)

Round 54: Knit 6 stitches, kfb, knit 2 stitches, kfb, knit 6 stitches, knit 6 stitches, kfb, knit 2

stitches, kfb, knit 6 stitches (36 stitches)

Round 55: Knit 7 stitches, kfb, knit 2 stitches, kfb, knit 7 stitches, knit 7 stitches, kfb, knit 2

stitches, kfb, knit 7 stitches (40 stitches)

Round 56: Knit 8 stitches, kfb, knit 2 stitches, kfb, knit 8 stitches, knit 8 stitches, kfb, knit 2

stitches, kfb, knit 8 stitches. (44 stitches)

Cast off

This is a photo of the whale from the back, put a little stuffing into the tail, not too much.

Make sure the body is firm.

Line up the ends of the whale’s tail and sew it together, sew through both of the stitches as in

the above photo.

The tail has got a natural depression in the middle.

Fins: Knit 2

Cast on 10 stitches and join for knitting in the round, magic loop, or use DPNs.

Rounds 1- 10: Knit

Round 11: Knit 2 stitches together at the beginning of the round and the end of the

round. (8 stitches)

Round 12: Knit

Round 13: Knit 2 stitches together at the beginning of the round and the end of the

round. (6 stitches)

Round 14: Knit

Round 15: Knit 2 stitches together at the beginning of the round and the end of the

round. (4 stitches)

Round 16: Knit

Break yarn and thread yarn on a wool needle, thread the needle through the stitches,

pull tight and finish off.

Sew the fins onto the lower part of the body on the sides.

The Blowhole:

Thread a strand of blue yarn onto a wool needle, make a knot on the end of the yarn. Sew

into the under belly of the whale and secure your wool. Now push the needle up through the

whale and out the top of his head. See photo below. Sew back down to the base of the body

and pull ever so slightly to create a depression for the blowhole. Now sew into the underside

of the whale to secure, making sure to keep the depression on top of the body and finish off

neatly.

The blowhole should look like this.

The Eyes:

With black fleece and a felting needle, needle felt some eyes onto the lower side of the face on

each side of the whale’s face.

Finishing off:

Sew in any ends and close the opening at the front of the whale’s face.
