Karl Johnson moved from Kokomo to a large brick and stone estate home just northwest of the intersection of West 146th St. and U.S. 31 about 1944-45. He was of a prominent Kokomo family and moved to Carmel as President and Owner of Steel Parts Corp., which had a plant in Tipton, IN, and Corporate offices in Indianapolis, IN. Happy Thompson purchased Karl Johnson’s property and the estate home, which was located about where Best Buy is now, with his property going north to just north of Greyhound Pass. Happy Thompson then installed large freezers in the basement of the home and used them to store his slaughtered registered Aberdeen Black Angus cattle, which he raised across U.S. 31. Later, he had a heliport pad installed just about where the Moyer Fine Jewelry store is now. Eventually, the property and estate home were purchased by Ralph Wilfong who developed the plazas that are there now. He used the estate home for his Corporate offices and eventually moved the estate home up Greyhound Pass about 3 blocks. It is currently being used as the Hamilton County (Westfield, IN) Trustee’s office. Karl Johnson did not raise cattle. A big white barn and silo sat on the east side of U.S. 31 with the words: “Blacks Breed Better Beef Buy Black Bulls” painted in huge black letters vertically on the side of the silo (or horizontally on the side of the barn). Information: 236 Acres in 4 parcels. Owned by Otto N. Frenzel, CEO of Merchants Bank.
In 1933, an 80 acre parcel on the east side of Clay Center Rd. was owned by William Jessup. This parcel was later owned by Otto N. Frenzel, becoming part of Hobby Horse Farm. Harold Hilton, who farmed the western part of Hobby Horse Farm, lived at this location. The Hilton family home and farm buildings are still there and are located across from (present day) Clay Spring Dr.
CHS ’63 Ernie Hawk lived on this farm with his family through high school. The Hawk family farmed the eastern part of Hobby Horse Farm and lived near the entrance to the farm just off of Spring Mill Rd.
Land Ownership: In 1949 and 1954 this land was owned by Otto Frenzel. In 1964 this land was owned by Otto N. Frenzel.
What’s there now: The core of this farm is still there and is owned by Nicholas Frenzel, son of Otto N. Frenzel. A Frenzel daughter (married name Brookwalter) also lives there in a separate estate home.

Information: 207 Acres in 7 parcels. Both Edgar Brown and Frank Huber were CHS ’56 Bob Huber’s grandfathers. Walter Fertig was Mayor of Noblesville at the time he acquired the 40 acres of land at West 116th St. and Pennsylvania Ave. that had previously been owned by Frank Huber. Frank Huber farmed the 160 acres of land that belonged to the Fertig family until he died. The name of Frank’s wife was Blanche.
Land ownership: In 1933, 1949, and 1957 the north parcel (47 acres) was owned by E.E. (Edgar) Brown. John Kirk Furniture Galeries is located within the north parcel. In 1964 most of the north parcel was owned by the Brown family. Prior to the Depression 40 acres of the land at West 116th St. and Pennsylvania Ave. was owned by Frank Huber. In 1933, 1949, and 1957 the south parcels (160 acres) were owned by the Fertig family. In 1964 79 acres of the south parcels was owned by Alice Fertig. The remainder of the south parcels was owned by other individuals.

Hunt, Howard’s father, owned (not shown on topo map segment) an 80 acre parcel of land northeast of the “T” intersection of Gray Rd. (North-South Gray Rd.) and East 136th St. (Smokey Row Rd.).
