Meet The Royalty CandidatesWest St. Paul Days Parade

West St. Paul Days Royalty Coronation

If you’re a stranger ‘round these parts, listen up: you’ll want to polish your boots, pick out your shiniest belt buckle and hang on to your hat, because West St. Paul Days is comin’ to town.

The 23rd annual West St. Paul Days, this year themed “Wild, Wild West St. Paul,” is sure to bring a jingle-jangling, hat-tipping, hee-hawing good time to the city from May 14 to May 19.

Whether you like to gawk at the parade, take a few rides at the carnival or just chew the cud with the townsfolk, the festival is renowned for its array of offerings guaran-teed to please everyone from the young colts and fillies on up to the most wizened cowpuncher.

Rounding everyone upOf course, West St. Paul Days is more

than just a good time. The festival provides the city with a key opportunity to come together, introducing businesses to custom-

ers, schools to parents and students, elected officials to constituents and new neighbors to the community.

“West St. Paul Days has kind of stuck with a home-grown philosophy,” explains Dennis Maher, a long-time volunteer in charge of this year’s parade. “Everybody’s kind of itching to get out meeting people and representing their city.”

But make no mistake: if you come to West St. Paul Days fixing solely to have fun, you’ll find it’s a hard target to miss. Between cheese curds, cotton candy, live music, ornate floats, the sweat and dust of the softball tournament and the elegance of the Royal Ambassador’s coronation, there’s plenty to spur you on through the weekend.

Join the driveIf you really enjoy your time at West St.

Paul Days this year and you have the ener-gy to make one more stop, thank a mem-ber of the Celebrate West St. Paul board and think about volunteering next year.

Celebrate West St. Paul is a non-profit, vol-unteer-driven organization. These folks not only work hard in the months before the festival, they have fun planning events for the community to enjoy.

According to Kathy Maher, wife of Dennis and director of the Royal Ambassador program, the best way to ensure the festival continues to improve is to get involved.

“We’re always looking for more volun-teers,” Kathy says. “There’s just a handful of us really that put a lot of time.”

Short of using a lasso, however, the only way to gather volunteers is to show them how all that hard work pays off in one of the most fun-filled festivals to hit the metro. So if you’re ready, saddle up and hang on, because you’re in for a wild, wild ride.

Meet the mayor of these parts

Kick off your West St. Paul Days experi-ence with mix of entertainment, education and mini-doughnuts at City Hall May 15. Residents are invited to the city’s annual open house from 5 to 7 p.m. Meet or catch

up with the city council member repre-senting your ward, ask all those burning questions you have for city staff and check out an assortment of presentations on city programs.

To sweeten the deal, the city will provide free hot dogs, lemonade and mini-doughnuts to guests. If you already know the city inside and out, hobnob with neigh-bors while the kids enjoy various games and festivities. For more information, check out the city’s website at www.cityofwsp.org.

Rides that won’t leave you bowlegged

No bucking broncos here, but from May 14 to May 20 you can ride just about any-thing else for just a fistful of tickets at the carnival. The carnival opens from 1 p.m. to 11 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday and noon to 6 p.m. Sunday.

If you have the fortitude to hang onto your lunch through all those rides, there will be plenty of fair food worth eating: cot-ton candy, caramel apples, mini-doughnuts, cheese curds, funnel cake, corn dogs and

Carnival tickets are $1 each, or

Grab your partner and do-si-do

No matter what those other festivals tell you, it’s not a real party until people start dancing in the streets. And if you can wait until 6 p.m. May 17, you’ll

have a chance to do just that at the Royalty Street Dance at the Commercial Club on Robert Street.

Devoting himself to the rare coin and precious metal trade for well over three decades, Westerling’s commitment to the customer is second to none. From their Roseville office, he and his associates offer purchases and appraisals for estates, banks, insur-ance companies and individuals.

“My staff and I are dedicated to helping people preserve and grow their wealth,” Westerling explains. “That’s why The Truman Company offers personalized ser-vice tailored to each individual.”

Introduced to the business by his Uncle Truman, a young Roger became enamored with coins. This nearly-lifelong passion encour-aged Westerling to open his own business under the Truman name.

“Every time he visited my fam-ily, he gave me a coin that had an interesting history. His hope was that I would develop a real inter-est in rare and unusual coins, and it worked,” Westerling says with a smile.

Westerling visited Minnesota to appraise a collection in 1998, and was so touched by the welcome he received he decided to move both his home and business to St. Paul. He currently works with about 3,000 clients around the country.

Westerling is a life member of the American Numismatic Association and holds an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau.

His knowledge can reassure people that they’re insuring or pricing such items correctly. “I’m more than happy to visit a home or bank to review a collection,” Westerling notes. “There’s a mar-

ket for everything!”Though old coins appreci-

ate gradually, precious metals have undergone dramatic spikes over the past decade in value, Westerling adds. From 2002 to 2013, the value of silver went up by 668 percent and gold by 595 percent. Many of Westerling’s customers are currently trans-ferring individual retirement account funds from banks to a precious metal IRA.

“I honestly think the prices for gold and silver will con-tinue to rise throughout our lifetime, while the U.S. dollar declines,” Westerling explains. “Transferring to a precious metal IRA can be an excellent invest-ment.”

Customers will feel at home in The Truman Company office, where they might even meet

Westerling’s pooch, Sonny, and his wife, Donna, a Twin Cities artist whose work is featured throughout the office.

Curious about the worth of

a personal collection? Roger Westerling and his staff at The Truman Company are ready to help.

As part of the Wild, Wild West in West St. Paul Days, the West St. Paul Kiwanis club is rounding up treasures for the silent auction being held Sunday, May 19, as part of the annual pancake breakfast at the West St. Paul YMCA.

Arrive early to check out the collection of autographed sports memorabilia from the Vikings, Twins, Timberwolves, and North Stars that include footballs, caps, photos and jerseys.

If sports memorabilia isn’t your thing, you can also find designer baskets created by Jean Helfman filled with goodies for scrapbooking enthusiasts, gardeners, picnic lov-ers, Willy Wonka candy lovers and those who love to keep their cars glistening.

Or you can aim to please every-one by bidding on gift certificates for services, memberships, fashion items, knick-knacks and chow.

Now don’t start a stampede -- just make sure you make it to the YMCA between 7 a.m. and 1p.m. to bid on these fabulous items. Be sure to bring cash or your checkbook. You can also enjoy flapjacks, sau-

sage, coffee, milk and juice around the chuck wagon at the same time.

All of the proceeds are given to local high schools for scholarships, including Henry Sibley, South St. Paul, and Woodbury among others,

as well as community youth projects and local high school Key Clubs benefit. Come join the celebration and help change the world, one child at a time.

Besides chowing down on a delicious breakfast, those who attend the Kiwanis Club pancake breakfast will be able to bid on great prizes and raise money for scholarships.

Queen's Farewell

Kerri MoranMiss West St. Paul 2012

This year, being Miss West St. Paul 2012 has been one of the most amazing years of my life.

I have had the honor of spend-ing my year with four other amazing girls, Princesses Kelsi Rose Ternes and Mina Hunter-Baltes, Junior Miss Juliet Dupont, and Little Miss Mikaela Dickey.

On behalf of the 2012 West St. Paul Royalty, thank you to Celebrate West St. Paul Days and the West St. Paul Royal Ambassadors program for letting

us represent you during the past year. Thank you to each of our sponsors

and to all who sponsor and donate to the Celebrate West St. Paul Days and Royalty programs. Without your sup-port this program would not be pos-sible.

Thank you Terri Wenda and Kathy Maher for coordinating our events and activities.

Thank you all the royalty parents for everything you have done this year including pulling and setting up the

float, decorating, getting us to where we needed to be, taking tons of pic-tures and so much more!

While our year is coming to an end, each of us has so many amazing memo-ries from this year that we will never

forget! It has been an honor being the 2012 West St. Paul Royalty and representing such a great city and people.

Sincerely, Kerri Moran

‘So many amazing memorieS’

The West St. Paul Royal Ambassadors program is much more than tiaras and sashes.

Organizers explain that candidates go through a month of interviews, community-service activities and West St. Paul Days events. They’re considered for their volunteer work, educational ambitions and skills in leadership and communication.

The young women and girls selected as ambassadors -- Miss West St. Paul and her two princesses, Junior Miss West St. Paul and Little Miss West St. Paul -- have a full slate of activities not just during West St. Paul

Days or the summer, but all year long.Throughout the year, the Royal

Ambassadors volunteer in various local roles, such as visiting residents in senior living facilities, assisting with the Optimist Club’s annual spelling bee and participating in Library Days at the Wentworth Public Library. They’re especially appreciated at activ-ities with youngsters, where they serve as great role models.

Royal Ambassadors also travel near and far to represent West St. Paul at area festivals in other cities. They appear, at a minimum, 50 times during the year of their reign.

These members of royalty earn their crowns Smiles on wheels: that’s the West St. Paul Royalty float

in last year’s West St. Paul Days parade. Young women and girls learn poise and presentation in the local pro-gram and represent West St. Paul in many civic events.

Page 11: West St Paul Days 2013

in the Kiddie Parade (technically the first parade of the season in the metro area), enjoy food and games, and at 10 a.m. get ready to rock out to tunes from the Teddy Bear Band.

Hittin’ the (parade) trailForget high noon -- May 18 peaks at 1

p.m. with the West St. Paul Grand Parade, the (official) first parade of the summer sea-son in the metro. Because it’s the first, West St. Paul’s parade is well-known for its strong turnout from royalty and traveling floats from throughout the region.

This year’s parade rolls along South Robert Street from Emerson Avenue to Haskell Street. Make sure to line up early to get a good view, because the highlights will be plentiful.

This year’s celebrity marshal will be Nancee Parkinson, named Miss West St.

Paul in 1960 and Miss Minnesota the fol-lowing year. Parkinson went on to be a finalist for the title of Miss America and starred as Daisy Mae in the 1971 TV special “Lil’ Abner.” Parkinson will be joined by Grand Marshal Lynn Mortensen, owner of Southview Garden Center. Southview Garden Center is celebrating its 50th anni-versary in West St. Paul this summer.

Fun for young cowpokesThere’s a number of ways to keep the

good times rolling after the floats have fin-ished their runs. Head to “Rock the Barn” at the Dodge Nature Center from 3 to 8 p.m. and enjoy raffle drawings, barn tours, wagon rides, face painting and more, as well as live music from Four Legg Fish, Choo Choo Bob and Brother Seamus. Admission is $20 for member families or $25 for non-member families. Kids 2 and young get in free.

You can also try to finish the perfect day with a perfect score at the Optimist Club Bowling Blast from 3 to 6 p.m. at West Side

Lanes. Admission is $10 and will earn you shoes, two games and tickets for prizes.

It’s not exactly a dude ranch, but you can find plenty of dudes (and gals) admir-ing the raw horsepower at the Top 20 Car Show at the Commercial Club from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Get some vittles for yourself when Darnell & Louis’ BBQ Chicken & Ribs starts serving at noon. Make sure you wipe the sauce off your face in time for more live music from City Vibe from 2 to 6 p.m.

Ridin’ into the sunsetGear up for the final day of the festival

with a hearty meal at the Kiwanis Pancake Breakfast. Stop by the West St. Paul YMCA from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. for your fill of sausage, coffee, juice, and of course pancakes.

Finally, slick back your hair and cinch up your bolo tie and head to St. Croix Lutheran High School at 1 p.m. for the crowning of the 2013 West St. Paul Royal Ambassadors. You can watch your candi-dates, from Little Miss all the way up to Miss West St. Paul, wow the audience and

lay claim to their tiaras. Bid farewell to the 2012 royalty who represented the city so well and cheer on the newcomers for the year ahead.

From there, you can squeeze a few last rides in at the carnival, or perhaps invite a few neighbors back to sit on the porch and wind down for the evening. But know this: as you watch the floats, rides and decora-tions packed up and the organizers ride off into the sunset, you can rest assured that the wild spirit lives on in the city, and that West St. Paul Days will be back again.
